...work and to what extent do recent attempts to ‘engage’ people represent progress in modern management techniques? Motivation is a driving force within an individual to do something well. Motivation is particular to an individual so it is important to find out what factors drive each person. Some employees may be motivated by working in a team whereas others could be driven by a desire to make a difference, therefore is understood in different ways from different people. Some are motivated by power, others by recognition in work and salary, and third by improvement in their social status. In the management sphere motivation of employees is one of the most valuable intangible assets of a company, because an entity cannot meet the expectations of customers, unless they maintain motivation of employees (Boddy,2008 ) As we all know, valuable things are not easy to accomplish, this is why employee’s engagement is one of the hardest challenges every manager. Some managers tend to become more self- centered and less mindful because of the fact that they are in charge, this is called “the fallacy of centrality” – the assumption that because someone has a central position in a company, he or she knows everything necessary to exercise effective leadership. Researchers have always tried to determine what motivates people's actions and, as a result, different motivation theories have emerged. But before these theories are examined, it should be made clear what motivation means. Lots of academics, including Beardwell and Clayton(2007), define motivation as willingness to exert effort for the realization of specific goals. When a person is motivated, his behaviour is based upon his or her individual needs. According to Introduction to Business, work motivation is the “psychological force within people that arouses their interest, directs their attention, and causes them to persist and work intensely to find a way to achieve their work goals” (Jones, 2007, p. 210). Maslow’s needs hierarchy, expectancy, goal setting, equity, and job-enrichment are five theories that illustrate various sources of employee motivation. In the first case study, Two Men and a Lot of Trucks, the owner, Mary Ellen Sheets used Maslow’s needs hierarchy theory. This theory specifies why and how people try to satisfy their needs through their behaviors at work. We propose that age moderates the effectiveness of intangible rewards on increasing employees’ motivation in the workplace. Specifically, we suggest that Generation Y’s are relatively more intrinsically motivated than older generations. Given the strong positive relationship between rewards and motivation, there are many factors that influence an employee’s level of motivation. Motivation is defined as a person who is "hard" at work, one who "keeps at" his work and one who directs his behavior towards appropriate outcomes (Johns & Von Saks, 2011). Daft and Marcic (2008) has defined motivation as the force or forces that arouse enthusiasm and persistence to pursue a certain course of action. Rewards motivate people both intrinsically and extrinsically. Extrinsic rewards consist of monetary gains and job promotions, whereas intrinsic rewards comprise of meaningful work and work-life balance. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and Alderfer's ERG theory suggests that one will be motivated to be able to satisfy personal needs.
