Allstate Insurance Company Goal of Diversity This case focuses on Allstate Insurance Company and its goal of diversity. Allstate Corporation has found that its diversity strategy has become one of the company’s most competitive weapons. The company’s vision states: “Diversity is Allstate’s strategy for leveraging differences in order to create a competitive advantage.” Allstate has divided its strategy to reach diversity into two main points: one internally focused and the other externally focused. James DeVries, senior vice presidents of human resources, states that the internal diversity focus is “unlocking the potential resources, and opportunities to succeed.” The external focus of diversity is making certain that the workplace matches the experiences, backgrounds, and sensitivities of the market it serves. The managers at Allstate look at these views of diversity not as a goal but as a process that is integrated into the daily life of the company. In 1969, Allstate launched its first affirmative action program. At this time the company focused more on affirmative action and diversity awareness through education and training. Allstate has taken four specific steps to impact business results, with a workforce of differences so they can bring them together in a powerful way. The first step is succession programming. In this step, a diverse slate of candidates is identified and developed for each position. The second step is development. In this step each employee receives an assessment of their job skills and receives a development plan for critical skill needed of their jobs. The third step is measurement. At this step each employee takes a survey twice a year called the Diversity Index. Managers at Allstate uses the results from a large online survey called Quarterly Leadership Measurement System (QLMS) to create programs that will solve any…...

...setting process to determine whether or not Allstate has an effective goal setting program. In an effort of bringing together the workforce of differences in a more powerful way so as to impact business results, Allstate Corporation has developed four specific steps for goal setting process. The first step is that of succession programming, followed by development and measurement steps. The last step is that of accountability and reward. Goal setting is a process considered a powerful way of motivating individuals and important in ensuring or rather determining the success of any business (Locke & Latham, 2002). How company managers approach the process of goal setting varies between big corporations and an owner running a business. There are usually five general principles required for a goal to motivate the concerned parties and these include feedback, clarity, task complexity, commitment and challenge (Locke & Latham, 2002). From the case study, it can be observed that step two of Allstate’s Corporation goal setting program, which is the development stage, allows for employee feedback on which future development programs can be founded (Locke & Latham, 2002). Additionally, step four involving accountability and reward ensures that employees are provided with a challenge for which they will receive awards at the end of successful completion of tasks assigned. For those women who also have young children to cater for, Allstate Corporation has developed a number......

...of the progress towards the goal it makes it challenging to stay focused and motivated. The Diversity Index is a great example of Allstates efforts to encourage feedback. This survey asks questions that will trigger responses that determine quality of service, fair treatment, etc. This is a great way to challenge the company to stay on top of the working environment and conditions. Not only is feedback given to employees but employees are encouraged to voice concerns they may have for the employer.. This survey also helps the company to understand how the employees feel about all aspects of their working condition (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011 pg 216). The employee must commit to the goal especially when the goal is difficult. Allstate has made it easy for there employee to stay focused on there goal by having on site childcare. The childcare centers offer parent discounts. Other services Allstate offers are dry cleaning, and oil changes. These are great resources for the employees. This service takes stress off the employee when they are trying to work. If you are able to go down to the childcare center to check on your child on your break it allows you to work when you are work. These programs help the employee balance work and personal life. This creates a positive direction for the employee to head in (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011, pg 216). Allstate seems to have a grasp on knowledgeable and attainable goals. ...The launch of Allstate financial proved to be a rocky endeavor. Many issues kept the division from growing as fast as the insurance division. One of the main issues Allstate faced was a lack of selling support from their agents. Allstate relies heavily on their agents to sell Allstate products like insurance policies as well as allowing their exclusive agents, whom passes the securities license exam, to sell financial investments such as certificate of deposit, annuities, and mutual funds. When they pushed the new financial products and investments initiative, Allstate set up a new sales quota for these products to incentivize the agents to get licensed. The incentives worked compelling 6,000 existing agents to get licensed however; sales of financial products were weak. Allstate Financials’ main demographic is people over the age of 40; with the main focus being to aid in retirement investing. Allstate’s agents felt that the lack of training provided by Allstate, disregarding the securities exam, wasn’t properly preparing them to sell investments and risk their client’s futures. There are a few different things Allstate could have done to make the Allstate Financial rollout more successful. First, Allstate needs to address the lack of confidence exhibited by their exclusive “personal financial representative” agents. Their agents felt as if the training program was inadequate for investing people’s retirement funds. Allstate should have reworked their training programs and...

Goal setting for individuals or groups are part of the planning process in which strategies are developed to achieve specific organizational goals. There are many different theories individuals, teams and organizations can use as a guide for setting goals. For example the motivational theory which states the techniques that can be applied to motivate individual, teams, and organizations. Having a motivating factor can be the catalyst needed to achieve your goals. For example increasing an employee pay if they achieve their goals can be a major motivator. Setting goals are very important, but having goals and setting goals are not effective if you do not reward individuals or teams when they meet or exceed goals. For example if your weight loss has caused you to drop a size, reward yourself with a pair of new jeans or a top. ...Allstate Gary Shelton Organizational Behavior July 19th, 2011 Abstract Using the model for goal setting, evaluate Allstate’s goal setting process to determine whether or not Allstate has an effective goal-setting program. In my opinion, Allstate has an effective goal setting program. There are four steps in there program: succession programming, development, measurement, and accountability and reward. Succession programming is a way of getting diverse candidates (cream of the crop) for key positions. People tend to trust employees like themselves regardless of race, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, or cultural background. Allstate has over 36,000 employees 60 percent are women, and nearly 30 percent are minorities (“Diversity”, 2011). “More than 40 percent of officers and managers are women and nearly 20 percent come from one of five minority groups”, which means that all backgrounds are represented in some way within the company (“Diversity”, 2011). In the development program, a performance evaluation is used to assess job skill for advancement. Employees give feedback to leaders to evaluate and use for future programs. Training courses are mandatory and Allstate has had about 640,000 hours of diversity classroom time (Wah, 1999). The next step, measurement is done twice a year by employees to give feedback to management and based on the......
