Behavior Intervention Plan Target Behavior and Client Background Part 1

CLIENT: Sara F.
DOB: 05/17/2006
1. Client Background

Sara is a five year old female with no major medical problems. She lives at home with her mother, father, and two sisters. Sara attends a school for children with developmental disabilities. Sara attends school five days per week from 830 to 230. Her class is made up of 6 other students, one special education teacher and 2 to 3 aides. Sara has trouble with transitions both at school and in her home. Sara loves to go to school, but has trouble with the transitions throughout her day. Her parents have seen this in the home as well. Sara’s parents report that she will throw scream, cry, bite, kick climb on furniture and swipe items onto the floor Sara also will throw self onto the floor. This behavior occurs daily. It has also been witnessed by the parents the Sara become angry when she is asked to move to the next activity or tasks. The episodes will last from anywhere from 2 minute up to one hour. The staff at school did a recording of the episodes. The durations of the behavior and what prompted this behavior to happen. Sara parents want this behavior to stop, so they will start a plan at home as well. They feel that the behaviors are in the way of Sara ability to learn. At this time no major issues in the family or otherwise, no medications or treatments. In the past Sara had ear tubes put in for fluid buildup.

Gathering information to understand the behavior of children helps guide the child with appropriate behavior. Proper guidance can capture a solution to resolve the challenging behavior. I have been gathering information on different ways to diagnose and find solutions through different methods, which I intend to share. They are two strategies developed by behavioral psychologist to understand a child’s challenging behavior (FBA) Functional Behavior Assessment and (PBS) Positive Behavioral Support. These two strategies are to discover what is triggering the behavior, where the child is receiving the behavior from, and find a solution to replace the negative behavior with a more positive behavior. Collecting data to figure out the problems would be discussed and reviewed with the support team. When you do this you can collaborate to find the cause of the behavior challenges and find out perspectives of why they believe the child behaves this way, and what could be done as a teacher to help the child’s goal towards better behavior. By providing the earliest intervention possible it will allow for the children with autism to be able to improve the conditions that affect them such as communication, adaptive behaviors, intellect and socialization skills (Eldevik, Hasting, Jahr, and Hughes, 2011). In a study conducted by Eldevik, Hastings, Jahr and Hughes these researchers suggests that by offering early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) it can possibly “improve adaptive behavior and social behaviors within many young children with autism” (Eldevik, Hasting, Jahr, and Hughes, 2011). Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention, best known as EIBI is defined as “an evidence-based intervention using principles and procedures form Applied Behavior Analysis to teach adaptive behaviors to young children with autism spectrum disorders” (Cohen, Amerine-Dickens, and Smith, 2006). In the study conducted by Eldevik, Hastings, Jahr, and Hughes they used 31 preschoolers from ages 2-6 to assess the efficacy of EIBI. These students were compared to 12 other students (the control group) that were receiving a more traditional approach in pre-schools known as Treatment as Usual (TAU). In both groups, the students received the same constants, time of instruction, the same classroom sizes, and the same amount of teachers (3 teachers in a class setting).
