The contemporary economic climate has seen an ever increasing level of staff turnover and personnel reorganization, and the abolition of the traditional view of 'a job for life'. Consequently, there is more pressure now on organizations and HR managers to fill vacant positions quickly and with the most appropriate individuals. Decisions about hiring and classifying applicants are based on expectations or predictions about their future work behaviors. When a company needs to recruit new staff or make promotion decisions about employees, there are various methods of assessment at its disposal. This article examines different methods of assessment and selection commonly used by organizations today; the interview, psychological tests, assessment centers and biodata. Whatever selection procedure is used, it should yield the right type of information and lead to correct decisions being made. If a technique is successful it is said to be 'valid'. The validity of an assessment is basically what the procedure measures and how well it does so. Validity of a procedure can be......

Tanglewood Case 4

...Christina Campbell HRM 710: Recruitment and Selection Tanglewood Case 4 Dr. Sayeed Islam Assess the practical and statistical significance of a proposed set of hiring tools, and make recommendations regarding how adopting these new hiring methods might benefit stores. Retail Market Knowledge Exam: Is a exam that was created in-house by Tanglewood’s staffing services and marketing divisions. I believe it is a good idea because who would know the company’s needs better than the company it self. It tests the applicants’ knowledge of the retail industry. It allows the company to filter out those applicants that they deem will not be an asset to the company. Marshfield Customer Service Biodata Questionnaire and Essay: This type of exam and essay were developed by the Marshfield Testing Corporation. It questions an applicant’s life experiences that will be significant to the their performance at work. The Marshfield Testing Corporation has taken interviews of thousands of people and used the data to make up questions that deal with job performance. I believe this exam and essay can be a vital tool, but it can’t just be the only tool used. Marshfield Applicant Exam: This exam was designed to test problem solving abilities, numerical processes, and work comprehension. It can be a very useful test because it will allow the employer to know how well the applicant will be able to think on their feet, solve problems on the fly and weather they will be able to......

How Well Does Biodata Predicts Performance in the Workplace?

...How well does biodata predict performance in the workplace? Biodata are biographical accounts of past events involving an individual’s background, including education, childhood, health and job history. To access the biodata of interviewee, interviewers usually ask factual kinds of questions about life and work experiences, as well as items involving opinions, values, beliefs, and attitudes that reflect a historical perspective (Schaffer & Lautenschlager, 1987). The individual can then be given a score based on their biodata. For example, the Weighted Application Blank (Goldsmith, 1922) assigns +1 for 8 years in education, +2 for 10, +3 for 12 and +2 for 16. This method of scoring allows a quick and easy comparison between applicants biodata. There are many advantages to using biodata, including allowing comparisons between candidates on their non-cognitive aspects. Applicants are less likely to lie due to the lack of demand characteristics (no “right” or “wrong” answers), which increases the internal validity of the data. In addition, the biodata must be in a sensitive and acceptable form for the candidates which can be difficult due to the nature of the information. Finally, the predictor variable must be clear, robust and measured by a reliable scale. Research suggests that biodata may be able to predict job performance (Vinchur, Schippmann, Switzer & Roth, 1998), staff turnover (Mael & Ashforth, 1995) and absenteeism (Stokes & Cooper, 1994). In a study......

Google's use of algorithms in recruitment First, you survey current employees on a variety of characteristics and traits, including teamwork, biographical information, past experiences and accomplishments (i.e., have they started a company, written a book, won a championship, set a record). Next, you statistically determine which of these many traits your top performers and most impactful employees' exhibit that differentiates them from bottom performing and average employees. Finally, you develop an online survey to gather the predictive information from applicants. Then each candidate's biodata survey and resumes are screened electronically and given a score between zero and 100 based on how many of the top performance indicators each candidate possesses. (It's important to note that using biodata to screen candidates is not a new process, but is quite rare in companies that hire large numbers of professionals.)"
