INTRODUCTION

Introduction:
In their 1981 book, Positioning: The Battle for your Mind, Al Ries and Jack Trout describe how positioning is used as a communication tool to reach target customers in a crowded marketplace. Regular use of the term dates back to 1972 when the same authors published a series of articles in Advertising Age called "The Positioning Era." Not long thereafter, Madison Avenue advertising executives began to develop positioning slogans for their clients and positioning became a key aspect of marketing communications.

Positioning:
The Battle for your Mind has become a classic in the field of marketing. The following is a summary of the key points made by Ries and Trout in their book

What is Positioning?

Positioning is a platform for the brand it facilitates the brand to get through to the target consumers.

Positioning is act of fixing the locus of the product offer in the minds of the target consumers. In positioning, the firm decides how and around what parameters, the product offer has to be placed before the target consumers. The significance of product positioning can be easily understood from David Ogilvy’s words; the results of your campaign depends less on how we write your advertising than on how your product is positioned.

Most authors define positioning as the perception that a target market has of a brand relative to its competitors. This definition raises two points. First, positioning is perceptual. In other words, positioning is not factual; instead it pertains to influencing customer perceptions of your product.

Second, companies cannot position brands in isolation; they must be positioned relative to one or more competitors. By nature, human beings learn by making comparisons. When we learn new information, one way we remember and use that information is by mentally comparing it to…...

...as miserable on an airplane. Airplanes are full almost every flight and the overall flying experience for passengers has been, just get me there safe. The transportation should be more than a “just get me there” flight. The improvements to the flight and customer service can be tweaked with minimal cost to the airlines. The ability to make small changes first can have a big impact. The ticket prices price and baggage fees are contact failures that can be addressed but the resolution of them may come with huge cost for the airlines and customer service failures can come with a smaller price tag. Minimal changes with minimal cost should be adjusted first to benefit the customer and the airline. The statement that helps position the brand around the new or improved services should be geared towards the onboard experience. For example: At Global Airways, it should never be a “just get me there flight.” It should be an experience for you to enjoy and celebrate. The airline wants you to feel as if you are a welcomed guest in our home. The airline has implemented more legroom for a cozy ride. Global Airways understands that staying connected throughout today is important too and it should not never come with a price tag. That is why we are offering free wifi services. ...Strategic Positioning and Sustainable Competitive Advantage in Food Industry Abstract Purpose – This paper examines the concepts of sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) and strategic positioning (SP) and seeks to develop a framework on determinants of SP and SCA in the food industry following the case study approach. Design/methodology/approach – This paper analyzes the concepts of strategic positioning and sustainable competitive advantage and their interrelation. The qualitative study of three beverage producers is conducted. Cases are analyzed based on the theoretical models discussed in the first part of the paper. Findings - This paper provides comparison of positioning strategies and SCA of three international beverage producers. The theoretical framework on determinants of these concepts was developed and applied for case study. The concepts of SCA and SP are interchanging, but from the case study it was not possible to conclude whether one leads to another. There is no single theory found which would be universal in explaining the success of the brands. Companies are complex structures and their success depends on many different elements which should be analyzed in combination. Research limitations/implications – The findings are based solely on the case analysis of three unique beverage companies. ...Brand Positioning, Vision, and Loyalty Brand Identity and Marketing Communication: BUS 4033 Unit 1 Assignment 1 Heather Dowell I found that consumer loyalties are high in bath tissues, and toiletries such as toothpaste contact solutions, toothbrushes, and cleaners such as laundry detergents etc. The common brands among all the consumers in my survey were Bounty, Tide, ECO, Listerine, Crest, Clorox Bleach, and Charmin. I believe this is because of a comfort. When they explained their loyalties it was mostly because of “well my mom always used it” or “well its always worked for me before.” I did have an interesting common answer. It was worded differently among the different consumers but essentially the same response for the cleaners, with there being so many different chemicals out there when they found one that worked they stuck with it because they felt uncomfortable using or trying so many different chemicals in their home. But there hasn’t been an organic cleaner that has convinced them it will actually work well enough for them to purchase and try. Consumer attitudes and behavior patterns affect marketing strategies in every way. This is a prime example. As Norm St. Laurent, operations manager for Oilwell Cable Company, pulled his Bronco 4x4 onto Kansas’ Interstate 70, he heard on the CB about the traffic jam ahead of him due to icy road conditions. Although the traffic was moving some, Norm decided to get off at the eastern off-ramp for Lawrence, rather than the more direct western off-ramp, to save time. While waiting for the off-ramp to come up, Norm’s mind drifted back to his discussion with Bill Russell, the general manager, on the previous day. Norm had been contemplating adding microprocessors to their rubber mixing equipment in order to save manual adjustments on these machines. This would improve throughput and reduce costs simultaneously, though without displacing any employees. Based on the data Norm had seen, it appeared that the microprocessors could cut the production time by 1 percent and reduce scrap from the current rate of 1 percent down to one-half of 1 percent. However, it seemed that this might be an issue that should first be submitted to the production team in charge of rubber mixing for their thoughts on the idea. Once before, an even simpler change had been made without their knowledge and it wound up causing considerable trouble. Most strong brands employ multiple brand elements. Marketers choose brand elements to build as much brand equity as possible. (Kotler & Keller, 2012) The real challenge is to understand whether or not the consumers think and feel if they only know about these brand elements. For example, a brand name might reflect the whole company and its business, from the eyes of the consumers. Brand elements play an important role in brand-building, where it might influence the minds of consumers who doesn’t need or use product information in making purchase decisions. Once you see who you are, you can determine who you want to be.
