Comparing Oedipus and Othello For Oedipus and Othello “duty” should have their first priority. Othello’s duty was supposed to be the importance of his marriage, but he listened to Iago, ignored Desdemona, didn’t believe his own conscience, and his own heart. Oedipus’ duty was to defeat the Sphinx(which he does) free Thebes from heavy taxes(which he does) be a great king of Thebes and be a good husband, but instead he offends Creon, his brother-in-law and uncle; insults his friend, Tiresias the blind prophet; kills his father; and destroys Jocasta, his mother and his queen. Fatal flaws demolished the lives of both Oedipus and Othello. Othello was so proud of his honor and bravery that he didn’t recognize his violent temper and Iago’s mind tricks. Oedipus was so proud of his cleverness that he tried so hard to escape his own fate. With all that said, these were honestly just a couple of comparable traits between Oedipus and Othello. When looking for a great leader that would lead your city through anything and everything it is not hard to tell that both Oedipus and Othello could be those leaders. Both had great gifts in leadership. They stood up in what they believed in. Each held exceptional accomplishments and both possessed the ability to be an all-around leader. Othello was a respectable citizen who was usually known for his fighting or war success. He knew how and what the goal was to succeed. Not all leaders knew that. Oedipus was also somewhat the same. He, like Othello, was known for his fighting and war success, but two words always stood out when people of Thebes talked about Oedipus; intelligent and self-confident. That’s where his true pride came from. Confidence was his strong point. Nothing brought him down. He knew what was needed to be done and he got after it the best way he could possible.
Both Oedipus as well as Othello hold similarities…...

...Comparing Endings In ancient Greece plays were a big part of society. They had festivals to celebrate these plays and crown the best at each of these festivals. Many plays were written and, thus, many different types of endings were created for them. Sometimes this would entail a technique known as Deus ex Machina. This would involve a god coming in at the end of the play and settling all of the issues. To act this out they would have the actor come down from a crane like machine. Other playwrights chose to end the play with characters settling all of issues but leaving room for interpretation. Both of these styles have been used in the plays we have read in the second half of this class. In Philoctetes Sophocles chooses to use Deus ex Machina to end it while he chose to end it with his characters in Oedipus Rex. In Philoctetes Odysseus and Neoptolemos are charged with the task of retrieving Philoctetes from the island he was left on by the Greek army. ...Comparing ‘Love That Doth Reign and Live within My Thought’ with the Unseen - Dr. Helen Fisher’s ideas about love The poem ‘Love That Doth Reign and Live within My Thought’ was written by Henry Howard, the son of the Duke of Norfolk who was executed for treason at the age of 30. It deals with themes of confusion of love, love itself, and death. He talks about a man being in love with a woman who does not return his feelings, this is also known as ‘courtly love’ and Henry was one of the first to introduce unrequited love as a main subject in the 16th century. The form of this poem is in a Shakespearean sonnet made up of 14 lines (3 quatrains followed by a final rhyming couplet) and is a translation of a Petrarchan sonnet. It follows the rhyme scheme ‘abab, cdcd’ and so forth, and uses inverted feet – this portrays the poem as quite masculine. Because this poem was written so long ago, there is a lot of archaic lexis and sophisticated language for example: ‘ire’ and ‘eke’ thus immediately showing the reader the time period that this poem was written in. The narrative stance of this poem is in 1st person, but mainly in the 3rd person – describing a knight. The unseen text is written by a biological anthropologist named Helen Fisher, straight away this makes it apparent to the reader that this is a more analytical and scientific view of love. ...Comparing Commercials One advertisement I chose to consider is the puppy monkey baby commercial that aired during super bowl 50. This advertisement was for Mountain Dew. I was horrified by this commercial. Another advertisement I chose to consider is an ad for Nissan. In the commercial they are advertising the Nissan Rogue. This commercial really grabbed my attention. I had actually said in the past that this was my favorite commercial because now-a-days most commercials are just ridiculous. Because it was such a good advertisement, it affected me in a good way as I still remember it since it last aired in 2015. In the Mountain Dew commercial, there is a hybrid which consists of a pug head, a monkey’s body, and a baby’s legs. The hybrid enters the room with a bucket of Mountain Dew’s new drink, kick start. The hybrid then starts dancing and handing out the drinks to three teenagers sitting on the couch. It seems as if they are targeting the younger generation. This commercial does not use logos to persuade the audience. The puppy monkey baby is not logical or realistic. This commercial does not use ethos to persuade the audience either. I did not get the impression the person behind the commercial had any good sense because I don’t believe there is such a thing as the puppy monkey baby.
