Departmentalization

...Each of these things needs to be done to have a good organization. Departmentalization is needed to do each group jobs efficiently. It can and does cause problems between workers. Such as when another group of workers is supposed to do a job and fail to do so, it then may fall onto another set of workers to complete. Where I work we are required to do housekeeping, v and our own job s of taking care of our patients. This causes problems because when we don’t have time to do something such as the nightly cleaning of the wheelchairs, and lifts. It causes upper management to get mad because it wasn’t done. Matrix organizations, is taking employees from every department and making a group that lets their upper management know how everything is going for those in their respectively departments. This does not make them tattle tells, as I am sure a lot of people would call them. They are there to help the upper management learn if changes need to be made to help the employees do a better job. These can cause problems because the other employees in a group may think the person doing the reporting is doing nothing but trying to get the other employees in trouble. Project teams are employees from all parts of the organization, and are grouped together to do a set project. This can be good for each group to interact with those outside of their normal groups. Project teams can cause problems though when those chosen don’t get along well, are not being corruptive with those......

Departmentalization in Elementary School

...Implementation Stage one - Before Successful implementation of departmentalization in elementary schools is a consequence of the amount of preparation involved in the planning stage. A committee will plan, through research how the departmentalization will be organized: partial or full departmentalization. In partial departmentalization students have two teachers divided into math/science and language arts/social studies. In contrast, full departmentalization students have a different teacher in a different class that teaches each subject. The committee will also decide which teachers will be on teams together. The committee consists of an administrator, teacher, content specialist, counselor, and curriculum coordinator. Parent input should be considered when determining some aspects of organization strategies. School administrators and teachers inform students and parents about departmentalization. An informational letter is composed telling why departmentalization has been adopted, when it will begin, and how it will be organized. The parents are informed well in advance of the actual implementation. A web page can be designed where parents can go to stay informed and to post questions and concerns. Communication with parents happens in a consistent and timely manner. Questions and comments from parents are discussed and responses given quickly. Administrators and teachers should be prepared to answer questions and calm concerns of parents. ......

Organizational Behavior

...Departmentalization allows organizations to be structured in way that similar jobs duties belong to a corresponding department. Functional departmentalization separates the functions necessary to operate the company into its own department. According to Gibson et al. (2012), the principal advantage regarding functional departmentalization is its efficiency (p. 402). Separating organizations into departments that share similar responsibilities allows for efficient management and may also promote teamwork. The disadvantage associated with functional departmentalization is that departments may become self-centered and lose focus of organizational goals in all entirety. Employees of the particular department may only seethe issues and work associated within their own department. Product departmentalization, on the other hand, places one manager in charge of all the jobs associated with a particular product (Gibson et al, 2012). This is an effective organizational structure that is practice in many large companies with product variation. Advantages of product departmentalization include high product visibly, well suited for rapid change, allows parallel processing of multiple tasks, and its even fosters the training of general mangers (Burton &Thakur, 1998). Product departmentalization allows for each product to receive the required attention, expertise, and focus in order to be successfully managed. Integrating different products and brands under the same management may......

Volunteers Work

...monitored regularly. If a volunteer got to much negative feedback they would not be allowed to post on the site. 3. Work specialization describes the degree to which tasks in an organization are divided into separate jobs. The main idea of this organizational design is that an entire job is not done by one individual. It is broken down into steps, and a different person completes each step. Individual employees specialize in doing part of an activity rather than the entire activity. Volunteers fit into this because they are taking on tasks that have been given to them specifically. Departmentalization is the basis by which jobs are grouped together. For instance every organization has its own specific way of classifying and grouping work activities. Functional Departmentalization, Product Departmentalization, Geographical Departmentalization, Process Departmentalization, Customer Departmentalization. Volunteers could fall under any number of these depending on how the company split up the calls. For instance by specific problem, service or demographics. Chain of command is the third specialization it is defined as a continuous line of authority that extends from upper organizational levels to the lowest levels and clarifies who reports to whom. There are three important concepts attached to this theory: •Authority: Refers to the rights inherent in a managerial position to tell people what to do and to expect them to do it. •Responsibility: The obligation to perform any......

Management Structures

...have recently had an increase in victims needing help in our area. My organization has asked me to increase our employees by 100%, and participate in an expansion plan. I need to research possible organizational structures that will best suit the needs of my clients and my organization. Upon my first task, I researched different organizational structures beginning with, Functional Departmentalization which is the process of grouping jobs by their functions, like marketing, finance, human resources performed . Then Product departmentalization which is jobs that are grouped by product line. In this approach each major product area is placed under the authority of a manager. Then there is Geographical Departmentalization which are jobs grouped on the basis of a territory or geography such as southern, mid-western, or northwestern. Next is the Process Departmentalization and this method groups jobs, on the basis of product customer flow. And then there is the Process Departmentalization which is the grouping on the basis of products for customer flow. And finally there is Customer Departmentalization, which is jobs that are grouped on the basis common customers who have common needs. Then I researched the Matrix organizations which is an organizational structure that facilitates the horizontal flow of skills and information. It is used mainly in the management of large projects or product development processes, pulling employees from different functional disciplines for......

...among employees can make them less flexible since it tends to reduce their ability to perform other types of work within the business that fall outside their particular specialty. DEPARTMENTALIZATION The process of forming employees into groups to accomplish specific organizational goals. TYPES OF DEPARTMENTALIZATION * FUNCTIONAL - Functional departmentalization in a restaurant could operate by separation of sales and marketing versus operations. Operations in the restaurant context apply to the preparation of food, while sales would apply to the serving of customers. (In this scenario, management may have difficulty deciding where to include staff that makes and serves drinks at the restaurant’s bar, because they are involved in both activities.) * Functional Departmentalization. An organization can be organized into departments based upon the respective functions each performs for the organization. For example, a manufacturing company may create a production department, sales and marketing department, an accounting department, and a human resources department. Functional departmentalization may be advantageous as it can increase efficiency and expertise because all related activities are performed in one place by one group of people that specialize in that activity * Product Departmentalization. An organization can also divide itself by its product lines. It creates a department for each product and that department controls all activities related to the......

...structure of Benedictine College that is shown through the schools organizational charts is a bureaucratic structure. This structure is a management system based on a formal framework of authority that is outlined carefully and followed precisely. Some characteristics of a bureaucratic organizational system are; a high level of job specialization, departmentalization by function, formal patterns of delegation, a high degree of centralization, a narrow span of management, and a clearly defined line and staff positions with formal relationships between the two. The departmentalization used at Benedictine College is, departmentalization by function. Departmentalization by function is the grouping of jobs that relate to the same organizational activity, basically this is saying that people that deal with the students, like hands on, are all in the same department, which is under that Dean of Students. Explain the Different Basis of Departmentalization with Their Respective Advantages and Disadvantages

... Q: Explain the different basis of departmentalization with their respective advantages and disadvantages. ANS: Departmentalization involves dividing an organization into different departments, which perform tasks according to the departments' specializations in the organization. Departmentalization as a means of structuring an organization can be found in both public and private organizations. An organization can structure itself into departments in the following ways. Departmentalization by function This is common and popular basis of departmentalization of an enterprise. Under this form, various departments are created on the basis of nature of functions to be performed like production, marketing, finance, personnel etc. A departmental head or manager is appointed to supervise and control the activities of the concerned department. All departmental heads are specialists and experts in their own area of business. When workload of a particular department becomes more, a department may again be classified into sub departments. Since the members working in a department have similar background and interest, it gives rise to specialization which makes manpower more efficient and skilled. Advantages of Departmentalization by Function * It is most logical and natural form of departmentalization. * It brings about specialization which makes optimum utilization of human resources. * It lays emphasis on each and every activity. * It enables top management to exercise......

The Case F the Manager Who Double Prductiity

...environment. 2. What is departmentalization? Departmentalization is the grouping of jobs into related work units. Explain departmentalization based on work, products, geography, and customers. Provide an example of each. Work function occurs when organization units are defined by the nature of the work. Although different terms mat be used, the four basic functions are production, marketing, finance, and human resources. Production is the actual creation of something of value, including goods, services, or both. Marketing involves product or service planning. The pricing of the product or service is based on its demand and the evaluation of the most efficient method to distribute the product or service. The human resource department is responsible for securing and developing the motivation/incentive for people to work. Product departmentalization occurs when all the activities needed to produce and market a product or service are under a single manager. This system allows employees to identify with a particular product. It also identifies each product as a distinct profit center. Departmentalization of products also provides training opportunities for executive personnel by allowing them to experience a wide range of functional activities. Problems can arise if departments become competitive and can be detrimental to the organization. Another problem is the duplication of facilities and equipment.
