Determinants of class position

In so-called non-stratified societies or acephalous societies, there is no concept of social class, power, or hierarchy beyond temporary or limited social statuses. In such societies, every individual has a roughly equal social standing in most situations.
In class societies a person's class status is a type of group membership. Theorists disagree about the elements determining membership, but common features appear in many accounts. Among these are: * Relationships of production, ownership and consumption * A common legal status, including ceremonial, occupational and reproductive rights * Family, kinship or tribal group structures or membership * Acculturation, including education
Classes often have a distinct lifestyle that emphasizes their class. The most powerful class in a society often uses markers such as costume, grooming, manners and language codes that mark insiders and outsiders; unique political rights such as honorary titles; and, concepts of social honour or face that are claimed to only be applicable to the in group. But each class has distinctive features, often becoming defining elements of personal identity and uniting factors in group behaviour. French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu suggests a notion of high and low classes with a distinction between bourgeois tastes and sensitivities and the working class tastes and sensitivities.

... Social Contract Position Essay Monique Stephens September 8, 2013 Instructor: Michael Crandell Course: HCA-255 | Health Policy and Health Economics After reading the old social contract it made me think about how healthcare is today and the obstacles that citizens face today to have coverage for healthcare. I feel that the government is trying to move in the correct direction in creating a new social contract, but before that can be done; everyone needs to review and evaluate the things that went wrong with the regulations previously and either alter them or create new rules. I feel that the Affordable Care Act is one way that things are improving regulations into a new social contract. If I could create a new social contract, I would start by figuring out how all citizens would benefit from a universal form of insurance coverage. Then I will see how each financial class will be able to contribute to the healthcare plans without having an increase in taxes and other things. If states still wanted to have forms of Medicaid and Medicare, I would try to set new regulations, definitely for Medicaid. I feel that individuals that are currently on Medicaid and other form of government assistance, do not fully need it and can be independent in some ways. Study after study demonstrates that the financial, academic, and psychological barriers that these students encounter can significantly undermine their performance. The summit shined the national policy spotlight on this persistent social class achievement gap. Our own and others’ research shows that these feelings of exclusion and difference that the First Lady described are key factors that fuel the gap. While all students tend to question whether they belong and have what it takes to succeed, these concerns are magnified for first-generation and low-income students because of the mismatch they experience as they enter this “whole new world” of higher education. When young people enter and exit the school setting without being given opportunities to advance to a greater level of socio-economic status, our system has failed to deliver its promise of a programme “that supports 21st century learning in all Australian schools” (ACARA, 2009, p. 1). Educational design must respond to the impact of class in Australia. Curriculum, pedagogy and assessment may all be tailored to respond to and reduce the impact of low socio-economic status on academic achievement. The 1966 release of Coleman’s Equality of Educational Opportunity Study clearly showed that a child’s socio-economic background has a dramatic impact on academic achievement. Coleman (1966) found that the single most significant determinant in educational success was the child’s home life, be that influenced by upper or lower class origins. More recent research by Berends, Lara-Cinisomo, Lucas, Maggio, Pebley, and Vaiana (2004) also concluded that the critical factor in influencing educational achievement in students was not “race, ethnicity, or immigrant status” (p. 1) but rather, the impact that comes from socio-economic factors. ...The social determinants of health (SDHs), is defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO), as being “the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age” that are “shaped by the distribution of money, power and resources” (World Health Organisation, 2014). According to Pega and Veale (2015), SDHs include education, occupation, income, gender, ethnicity/race, sexual orientation, and gender identity. It should be noted that sexual orientation was added as an SDH by the authors due to an article by Logie (2012), who found that people from lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, or queer (LGBTQ) sexual orientations faced pronounced negative health biases. The authors argue that gender identity should be added as an SDH, as it was found that prejudice, transphobia, and other violent and biased behaviours aimed at transgender people resulted in differential amounts of societal exclusion for groups of people defined by gender identity, encompassing healthcare scenarios. These socially conditions cripple transgender people via social exclusion, and benefit non-transgendered people through social inclusion. Although gender identity itself does not predict health status, it socially stratifies the population into different exposures to SDHs such as transphobia. Gender identity draws equal comparability to items on the SDHs list like sexual orientation (Logie, 2012) and ethnicity (World Health Organisation, 2008) by discriminating on the basis of racism or homophobia.......
