E-Cigarettes

Cigarette smoking is perhaps the world’s worst addiction. This health hazard has been and continues to ravage millions of humans cutting across the boundaries of civilization, geography, economy and social strata. It not only, sooner or later, kills the smoker, but, has negative effects on the passive smoking community as well.

Having said that, we must bear in mind that quitting smoking is one of the most difficult things for a smoker. The addiction is so overpowering that the smoker is, willingly or unwillingly, driven back to the death stick. It is truly a herculean task to kick the habit, once and for all.

Electronic cigarettes or E-cigarettes, as they are popularly known, are one of the many devices tried out by smokers to give up smoking. These come in variety of sizes and shapes – cigarettes, cigars, pipes, ballpoint pens, screwdrivers etc. Both disposable and refillable models exist. The quintessential idea is that the actual experience of smoking a tobacco cigarette is simulated, as closely as possible, in the E-cigarette, to retain the sense of déjà vu.

E-liquid or the nicotine solution is the combustible medium used. The solution is generally flavored in the traditional tobacco smoke aroma as also in newer strains such as chocolate, vanilla, wine and so on. The flavoring, nicotine and the polypropylene glycol (which creates the visible smoke) is called the E-liquid. When the e-cigarette is smoked, the liquid is heated using an atomizer and the vapor similar to the cigarette smoke is blown out.

A fairly recent innovation, these cigarettes are widely available in the American and European markets.

While the whole concept appears to be appealing, a few issues need to be given serious consideration.

E-cigarettes make tall claims of nullifying the adverse effects of smoking whereas opinions are strongly…...

... Article history: Received 12 October 2011 Received in revised form 5 January 2012 Accepted 18 January 2012 Keywords: Nicotine Tobacco Cigarettes E-cigarettes Addiction Harm reduction Introduction In the recent film The Tourist we first meet Johnny Depp’s character, Frank, through the eyes of Elise (Angelina Jolie), as he sits in a train carriage reading a spy novel and puffing on what appears to be a cigarette. For many viewers of the film, this was their first glimpse of an electronic cigarette, or ‘e-cigarette’, a device, as Frank quickly informs Elise, that is “not a real cigarette. It’s electronic. It delivers the same amount of nicotine but the smoke is water vapour”.1 Invented by a Chinese pharmacist named Hon Lik in 2003, the ecigarette was launched by the Chinese electronics company Ruyan Technology 3 years later, and received its first international patent in 2007 (Wikipedia, 2011). E-cigarettes now have a dedicated following amongst a small but growing number of users known as “vapers”. The appearance of the e-cigarette in The Tourist marks a new visibility for the product – a visibility that has been accompanied by energetic debate about its potential harms and benefits. Opinion on e-cigarettes has quickly polarised. For harm reduction organisations such as the Consumer Advocates for Smoke-Free Alternatives Association (CASAA) and the Australian Tobacco Alternatives Consumer Association (ATACA), along with a growing number of smokers themselves, e-cigarettes have......

Ecigarette

...It is only common sense that smoking is bad for us. Not only is cigarette smoking one of the most avoidable causes of poor health and death in our world today. But “smoking puts your friends and family at risk. Approximately 50,000 adult non-smokers die each year from second hand smoke alone, 3,000 of which die from lung cancer.” (NIDA/tobaccofreekids.org) Did you know that smoking is the leading cause of death in the United States “approximately 443,000 deaths or 1 of every 5 deaths, in the United States each year.”(CDC) E-cigarettes are known as electronic cigarette and vaporizer cigarette. They are devices that emit dose of vaporizer nicotine. They use a battery source to power the device. They are also a non-tobacco product. There are many that believe that e-cigarettes are going to draw children and young people into the habit because the e-liquids are made to taste sweet like fruit, desserts and popular beverages. Research has proved that nearly 3,000 kids under the age of 18 will try their first cigarette and another 700 become regular smokers. (Society) Most of them probably started smoking because there was a family member or a friend that they knew are smokers or former smokers. If the young people are going to smoke, they should chose the less harmful device to get their nicotine. There are about 480,000 deaths a year attributed to smoking or secondhand smoke. Many people smokers have switched from cigarettes to e-cigarette. There has been about 2 million......

Electronic Cigarettes: Regulate Them

...cigarettes boast the safety of these products, but there have been studies on inconsistent levels of nicotine, reaction of nicotine with an element in the air to form strong carcinogens, and increase in airway resistance, just to name several results. With very little known long term effects of these products, there may be an increase of other forms of illness in the future. In addition to all of these, is the consequence of glamorizing it. Defenders of e-cigarettes rely on two key arguments. E-cigarettes do not produce the amount of second-hand smoke as cigarettes. E-cigarettes can be effective at helping people quit smoking Despite the FDA reporting that “e-cigarettes have not been fully studied,” leaving many questions about safety, ecigarettes are growing in popularity. Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, have gained a considerable amount of popularity in the United States since its introduction. These hand-held, battery-powered devices initiate the appearance and function of a conventional cigarette. This is done when the atomizer heats up the solution and provides a nicotine vapor, instead of smoke, to the user (Mayo Clinic, 2013). Many of the manufacturers of electronic cigarettes boast the safety of these products although there are little evidence supporting that claim. Nevertheless, people continue to purchase them, and it is important to start implementing stricter policies on them. Policy Analysis Health Problem An analysis has been done by......

...the U.S. and foreign points. Foreign air carriers may request and obtain a waiver from this requirement provided that an alternative all forms of the products, including but not limited to: Electronic cigars, pipes, and devices designed to look like everyday products such as pens and USB memory sticks. The Department views its current regulatory ban on smoking of tobacco products on passenger flights to be sufficiently broad to include the use of electronic cigarettes. The recent decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit, Sottera, Inc. v. Food & Drug Administration, 627 F.3d 891 (D.C. Cir. 2010), supports the Department’s view that electronic cigarettes are often tobacco products. In that decision, the Court held that ecigarettes and other products made or derived from tobacco can be regulated as ‘‘tobacco products’’ under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2009 (Tobacco Control Act). The Tobacco Control Act broadly defines tobacco products as extending to ‘‘any product made or derived from tobacco.’’ However, if the products are marketed for therapeutic purposes, the court determined that they will then be regulated as drugs and/or devices under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The Department is proposing in this NPRM to explicitly ban the use of electronic cigarettes on aircraft as there has been some confusion over whether the Department’s ban on smoking of tobacco products includes a ban on use of electronic cigarettes. We see no......
