Reader Response I think Callenbach’s ideas of integrating sex and aggression is interesting. The whole idea of the war games is kind of interesting I think. It makes sense and it doesn’t. The Ecotopians hold these games to so that men can get rid of their aggressions. The Ecotopians believe that men are having these biological desires to be aggressive. The war games are so that men can let these aggressions out. Some men die in the War Games. It kind of reminds me of the Hunger Games except it is just men. The Ecotopians also believe that if these aggressions that men have deep down aren’t able to be let out they will result in things such as war. For that reason, the Ecotopians believe they should take the risk of the War Games, so that they won’t have to deal with an outbreak of war. What doesn’t make sense is that some men die in the War Games, so isn’t that kind of the same idea as war anyways? The book basically portrays women as sluts and political and they portray men as fighting murderers. The idea is supposed to be equality and at the same time this book portrays it as inequality in so many ways. I don’t really think that the War Games make Ecotopia more civilized. I don’t really think war and killing people really has anything to do with being civilized. I think it relates to how the real world is, but I don’t think that in a so-called “perfect world” people would be killing each other. If you were to look up what civilized means in the dictionary it has part of the definition that say polite, well-bred, and refined. It also says easy to manage or control, organized, or ordered. The idea of the War-Games do not seem to fit any of those adjectives that were listed. Game Design

...Games can be very powerful. Spacewar, Counter Strike, and the News Games are examples of three influential games that had powerful and lasting historical impacts. These three games subverted traditional game concepts, representations, or mechanics. Although some people may view video games purely as a casual source of fun and entertainment, a deeper examination of their messages can reveal what different games tell us about our culture, giving us a better understanding of why games are created and sometimes even insights into having a better experience playing those games. In this essay I will analyze three games from the readings and discuss how those games’ movements subverted mainstream culture through their concepts and representation. Spacewar subverted mainstream culture by providing the gamer, for the first time, with visual engagement. Steward Brand wrote a great article on Spacewar. This article takes takes readers back to a time when games were still not popular. I thoroughly enjoyed this reading because it gave me so many great historical facts about Spacewar. He began his article with the declaration, “Ready or not, computers are coming to the people.” This sentence set off a great tone for the article. ...War is fundamentally a cultural phenomenon. It is profoundly entangled with shared meanings and understandings, stories both old and new, and the evolution of the same. These stories and meanings concern how war is defined, what it means to be at war, how enemies are to be identified and treated, how war itself is waged, and how one can know when war is finished – if it ever is. The shared meanings and narratives through which the culture of war is constructed are diverse: oral stories told and retold, myths and legends, historical accounts, and modern journalistic reports – and it’s important to note how the nature of those last has changed as our understanding of what qualifies as “journalism” has changed as well. Video games are worth considering in this context, not only because of their pervasiveness but because of their narrative power. They share much in common with film: interaction with them is mediated by a monitor, and they almost always feature a narrative of some kind that drives the action on the screen. ...Society and Video Games Video games are still a very new form of media. Compared to other forms of entertainment like books, television, or movies, video games are still new and very misunderstood. As video games rise in popularity many people like to blame them for the problems of modern society, although other forms of entertainment involve common elements. Video games need to be seen just as equal to a fan of movies or books. They do not always have to be mindless entertainment and can also be helpful in your daily life. Just like how people do not judge all television shows based on The Jersey Shore or Teen Mom, video games should not be judged by popular games like Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto which are at times just mindless entertainment but not harmful. If you do not know what these are then just think about the most popular things amongst your favorite form of media or hobby. ...Rachel Dillie SOS-360 Final Project March 25, 2014 Game Theory “Game theory is the study of strategic interaction among rational players in an interactive setting” (Stevens, Lecture 1). Elements of a game consist of common knowledge, the players, strategies and payoffs. Every other Friday night my wife and I play cards at our friend’s house and it generally gets more intense as the game and the drinks progress. We mainly play a card game called spades and we play as partners. Common knowledge in this game is every player knows that in order to win you have to bid the correct number of books, meaning you have to guess how many rounds you and your partner can win based off what cards you are holding and what you think the other players are holding in their hands. Each player also is assumed to be an experienced player unless otherwise stated and even if they are it’s easier to guess how the hand will play out. In this card game there is not strictly a pure strategy at play, meaning it doesn’t not involve an act of randomness but a game of mixed strategy. Mixed strategy means using a pure strategy with acts of randomness. I have an idea what the other players will do when it is their turn in the card game but sometimes to force their hand, it is necessary to randomly sacrifice one of your cards to make them display their higher ranked cards. ...Date: March 14, 2015 Subject: ACL versus IDEA When comparing ACL and IDEA it was hard to choose which was clearly better because they perform such similar tasks. While we think both would be effective at identifying fraud there were a few reasons why we decided that IDEA was the better software. First, ACL simply was not designed as well as IDEA in our eyes. The team member who was assigned to the ACL tutorial had to re-install the program multiple times to “fix” simple errors that should have never arose to begin with. To add to that, it was not very user friendly in general which made it difficult to navigate and look at. ACL was, however, easy to import into Excel due to its inherent similarities with it. On the other hand, the team member who worked with IDEA found the software extremely easy to learn, use and remember and did not run into any problems due to design flaws. It was very easy to import and export from Excel with very simple and easy applications. There was a way to manipulate the data whichever way needed and by the end of the tutorial the team member felt that they were very knowledgeable on the software and felt confident in using it.
