...relationship between family socio-economic status (SES) and the academic performance of children is well established in sociological research.2 While there is disagreement over how best to measure SES, most studies indicate that children from low SES families do not perform as well as they potentially could at school compared to children from high SES families (Graetz, 1995). Most studies, however, compare students from across all SES backgrounds to reach the conclusion that low SES adversely affects a range of educational outcomes. Another important dimension, however, is the factors that may influence educational outcomes within particular SES bands. This paper presents data on the educational performance of children from financially disadvantaged backgrounds and examines its variation as affected by traditional measures of SES as well as by a range of other family, individual and contextual factors. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The purpose of this study is to know the problems encountered by the Grade Seven students of Dona Aurora National High School and the effects of these problems on their academic performance in school. More specifically, the investigation seeks to answer the following questions: 1. Do the following problem areas affect the academic performance of the students? a. Family b. Academics c. Study habits d. Social relationship e. Finance f. Health 2. How do these areas rank according to the number of frequencies of the specific......

...analysis of some factors affecting student academic performance in an introductory biochemistry course at the University of the West Indies Victor Mlambo Department of Food Production, Faculty of Science and Agriculture, The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago High failure rates at tertiary institutions result in unacceptable levels of attrition, reduced graduate throughput and increased cost of training a nation’s labour force. It is imperative that diagnostic studies are carried out to identify the major factors that are associated with suboptimal academic performance with a view of instituting corrective measures. This study was, therefore, designed to identify and analyse some determinants of academic performance (as measured by coursework exam grades) in an introductory biochemistry (AGRI 1013) course plagued by chronic high failure rates. The course is offered to first year undergraduate students in the Faculty of Science and Agriculture at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine campus. A survey instrument was administered to a random sample of 66 registered students of AGRI 1013 (representing a 40% sampling fraction) to generate data on demographics (gender and age), learning preference, and entry qualifications. The effect of learning preference, age, gender, and entry qualifications on academic performance (measured as the final coursework mark obtained) was determined. Relationships/associations between gender and learning......

...Running head: ASSIGNMENT 2: FACTORS AFFECTING MARKETING STRATEGY Assignment 2: Factors Affecting Marketing Strategy BUS 510 – Consumer Behavior February 23, 2014 Running head: ASSIGNMENT 2: FACTORS AFFECTING MARKETING STRATEGY Factors Affecting Marketing Strategy While at a local women’s retail store, came across an interesting leather necklace that caught my attention. As I moved closer to view the item, I was sure the accessory belonged to one of the popular designers and was quite expensive. Once I reached the shelf were the item was display; I saw the designer name “Heaven’s Creations”; an unknown product designer. The necklace was quite a show stopper, extraordinary looking and not to mention affordable. The off-brand’ designer’s line is unique because the pieces are all “one of a kind”--no replicas However, I was informed that the designer does design commission jewelry. I most say that if all future accessory ornaments of the unknown designer’s are as exquisite and show stopping as this leather necklace, the designer will not be off-brand for long. Jewelry, Apparel and Accessories products fall into the category of high involvement/emotions. These are products for which the buyer is prepared to spend considerable time and effort in searching. When marketing this jewelry line, I am going mimic existing campaigns as jewelry is a billion-dollar industry employing millions of people around the world, and costume jewelry has a large piece of this pie...

...Factors Affect The Academic Performance Of Selected Working Student Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction / Background of the Study Student jobs have become a sort of trend among students around the world, who want to work while they are studying. In short, the term that suits this trend is 'Earn and Learn' policy. Other reason why student jobs are popular among students is they help to cope up with the constant increase in tuition fees, and a way to afford further educations. ...COPING MECHANISM Task-oriented / problem-focused coping Problem focused coping also referred to active coping involves controlling managing stress by directly altering situations Edward, 1999. It alters either the environment itself the environment interacts. This type reaction of coping is more stressor and it tends to be used by the people with high score on the big fire personality super factor conscientiousness Watson & Hubbar, 1996. Emotion-oriented / emotion-focused coping In contrast, emotion coping strategies involves the individual’s attempts to regulate emotional responses to, and decrease the effects of a stressful situation Edwards, 1999. This coping strategy can change a person’s emotional response to the stressor. This type of coping usually decreases arousal. People are likely to adopt emotion-focused coping itself and so they must alter their perception of, or responses to, the stressors. Studies with male participants have indicated that those perceiving less control over events are less likely to use problem-focused strategies involving direct actions and more likely to use emotion-focused strategies such as distraction and emotion support David&Sals, 1999. If he doesn’t think anything he does at work ultimately affects whether he gets did off, he is less likely to use active coping strategies. Another type of emotion-focused is venting. Penne baker, 1989 asked a group of college students to write for twenty (20) minutes, a day of for four......

...uphill battle toward a degree. Persevering long enough to graduate can be just as challenging. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau revealed in 2000 that one in three Americans drops out of college. This is an increase from the 1960s when one in five discontinued his or her studies. Some studies indicate that a considerable proportion of college dropouts come from low-income families. The U.S. Department of Education found that 41% of low-income students enrolled in a four-year institution managed to graduate within five years. For higher income students, this jumps to 66%. Of the low income students that did not return, 47% left in good academic standing. Though research links financial difficulties to dropout rates, there are a number of factors that account for why students decide to leave school. Students tend to drop out because their expectations of college—academically, socially, or both—don’t match up with the reality once they get there. They also suffer from lack of motivation, inadequate preparation, and poor study skills. The National Center for Education Statistics indicates that dropout rates are particularly high for African American and Hispanic students. Other student populations at greater risk of dropping out include those who are the first in their family to attend college, those who have limited English proficiency, and nontraditional students such as returning adult students. Few students who drop out eventually finish their education. Those that do......

Factors Affecting Failing Grades

...What are factors affecting academic performance? Answer: Many, many factors can affect academic performance, which means how a person does on schoolwork. The physical condition of the student has a great deal to do with that person's ability to do a good a good job on anything and to understand anything. For example, if the student has poor eyesight, he or she might not be able to read well. If the student has a hearing impairment, he or she might not be able to listen to and understand instructions. If the student has a disease, it might impair his or her ability to do the required work. A student's socio-economic status (SES) can affect his or her ability to perform well academically. Students with less money might not be able to purchase school supplies that could help them with their work -- rulers, paper, pens, computers, books, etc. Students with less money might not visit their doctors and dentists very often and might suffer from undiagnosed illnesses or dental problems that cause pain or otherwise impair the student's ability to perform well. Students with less money might have household responsibilities that wealthier students do not have -- babysitting for younger kids while the parents work second and third jobs, working for money outside of school, or spending homework time waiting in line for food at a food shelter. Low SES students might live in difficult conditions without electricity or water, and might have to go away from home to take a shower, brush......
