Purpose: In order to improve competitiveness on a global scale, multinational enterprises increasingly develop a company-specific Production System (XPS) and deploy it in their worldwide operations. An XPS is synonymous with a tailored corporate-wide improvement programme. The purpose of this paper is to explore the circumstances under which an XPS can provide a competitive advantage.

Methodology: We use an explorative case study methodology to investigate the link between the establishment of an XPS and competitive advantage. Specifically we investigate the part of the Volvo Group’s globally implemented Volvo Production System (VPS) that aim to improve the manufacturing processes worldwide. Due to its historical trajectories, Volvo constitutes a unique case for studying the trend and effects of XPS. The resource-based view of the firm provides the theoretical foundation for our analysis.

...Introduction The advent of revenue sharing and salary caps has revolutionized the business of professional sports. The National Football League implemented these concepts in order to promote competitive balance. Theoretically, revenue sharing is supposed to encourage equal distribution of wealth so as to not concentrate top-talent players to the teams with the most resources. In so doing, its practice should work to ensure that there is equal competition among small and large market teams. Also, by enacting a salary cap, larger market teams are prevented from monopolizing talent. Through a series of collective bargaining agreements and lawsuits, there has been a movement in the NFL toward benefiting both the players and owners. The NFL is the most successful professional sports league in the country. This is in large part due to its ability to run efficiently as a business and promote competition as a sport. In this paper, we examine the historical significance of the progressive collective bargaining agreements and how its changes have effected players and owners of teams in the league. This article focuses on this practice particularly when information is shared in the downstream supply chain between a manufacturer and a retailer. We show how a manufacturing supply chain needs to be aligned with the retail supply chain in order to create value for the trading partners and for the end consumer. Through the analysis of three case studies we attempt to identify which practices allow efficient collaborative demand planning. Regarding the findings, different types of demand signals are identified through the planning process and allow us to highlight some breaking points that prevent the alignment and optimization of the retail chain. Research implications are the identification of four steps in the demand planning process that will help managers to better understand which actions should be taken to improve their collaboration practices.
