The Balanced Literacy Approach

Balanced Literacy
Balanced Literacy is a framework designed to help all students learn to read and write effectively. The program stands firmly on the premise that all students can learn to read and write. This balance between reading and writing allows students to receive the teaching needed in order to reach grade level status, while allowing students to work at a level that is not frustrating for them. There are several models currently used in schools today.

Literacy Collaborative
The Literacy Collaborative is a model for teaching children in a child-centered classroom, providing many opportunities for real life reading and writing experiences. Literacy Collaborative classrooms focus on four different types of reading experiences: Reading aloud to children, Shared reading-whole class, Guided reading-small group and Independent reading. The goal of the Literacy Collaborative is to help children become readers and writers who enjoy and value literacy.

Shared Reading
Shared Reading is a link in helping students become independent readers. It allows the teacher to model and support students using prediction and confirming skills. It allows less confident students the chance to share stories/articles/poetry in a non-threatening situation. It focuses on the meaning, fun, enjoyment, characters and sequence of a story and allows them to relate it back to their own experiences. It promotes discussion, problem-solving and critical thinking by students. During the initial reading, the teacher:
• Introduces the book (shares theme, examines title, cover, illustrations, and makes predictions)
• Relates prior experience to text
• Concentrates on enjoying the text as a whole
• Encourages students to use background knowledge to make predictions
• Encourages spontaneous participation in the reading of the story

After Taking the INT 94BZ freshman seminar, I have developed my own personal bias toward GM foods much like M.D. David Brownstein; however, I believe that GM foods are for the most part beneficial to our society. Certainly GM foods have there down sides too, I believe that GM foods are a necessary industry in our current world. Not only do GM foods often benefit large masses of people, they can create more jobs and help the world economy. Also through modifying certain genes in foods we can help stop disease, food allergies, and increase productivity. All a scientist has do to is modify the genes of a food that cause it to either be unsuccessful or undesirable to the general population (be it, genes that make a food more susceptible to pests, harsh weather conditions, etc.) After genetic modification, foods can grow in climates that would otherwise be unsuitable if it weren’t for the new genetic modifications and can also last longer on shelves in stores, greatly increasing revenue. ...Alternatives One alternative for GM would be to re-evaluate their partner selection process. In the case, it seems as if most GM’s partner firms gained more from the partnership with GM than did GM gain form the partnership. In most cases, foreign firms allied with GM to gain access to a new or expanded market for their automobiles. GM’s goals although fundamentally were anticipated to gain knowledge from foreign firms ultimately became directed solely at gaining profits. GM needs to re-evaluate not only how they select their partners, but for what precise reasons. GM needs to select partners that help the firm achieve its strategic goals. In this case gaining access to critical core competencies that Japanese manufacturers possessed. Second, to be a good partner for GM, the firm needs to share the firm’s vision for the purpose of the alliance. ...GM Recalls GM has once again recalled vehicles, but this time for a different problem. 2.4 million vehicles have been recalled in four separate recalls. The first recall, deals with 1.3 million Buick Enclaves, Chevy Traverse, and GMC Arcadia from the 2009–14 model year (MY) and Saturn Outlooks from 2009–10 MY for a front safety belt problem were the belts can wear down and eventually break. Dealers were told to not sell new or used models of these cars until the problem was fixed. The second recall effected 1.1 million Chevy Malibu from 2004–08 MY and Pontiac G6 sedans from 2005–08 MY because a shift cable in the may wear out over time causing problems with the transmission. The third and fourth recalls were much smaller, with the third encompassing 1,402 Cadillac Escalades from the 2015 MY because a faulty weld could cause the partial deployment of the front passenger airbag in a crash. Owners were told not to have anyone sit in the passenger seat, and all sales of the vehicle have been stopped until the problem has been fixed.
