Health Promotion in Nursing Care
There are many variations of definitions of Health promotion by individuals, authors, and organizations but in each definition they exclusively points to the same meaning. Health promotion may be defined as a systematic approach or process to help or assist individual, family, and communities to adopt a well-accepted method which produces healthy life styles by changing their addicted life styles which are danger to their health and could lead to chronic illness or death. Therefore this process can be done through providing information to the said group or by educating them. Health promotion is also the promotion of healthy ideas and concepts to encourage individuals to adopt healthy behaviors. (O’Donnell, 1987, p. 4-5) defined health promotion as “the science and art of helping people change their lifestyle to move toward a state of optimal health”. It was Kreuter and Devore who proposed a broader and complex definition published in their paper commissioned by U.S. Publish Health Service. They stated that health promotion is “they process of advocating health in order to enhance the probability that personal (individual, family, and community) private (professional and business), and public (federal, state, and local government) support of positive health practices will become a societal norm”.
The purpose of health Promotion can be achieved in two ways which can be passive and active. The passive strategy involve the government agencies whether Federal, state or local to device programs that will help encourage the health of people in the community by providing clean water to drink or adding Vitamin D in milk to protect children from exposure to sunlight and better growth.
