Holidays and Celebrations The book “All Around the Year” by Jack Santino is about the holidays and celebrations in America and how different decorations have different meanings. It follows the change of the seasons and the holidays that fall during those times. The books starts off by telling the reader that everyone views holidays differently and that everyone has their own celebrations besides the main ones like Thanksgiving and Christmas. We have anniversaries and birthdays, ethic holidays and occupational celebrations. Depending on how you were raised and what religion you are decides some holidays you choose to celebrate or ignore and how you would decorate for the time of year. Chapter two is about holiday symbols and meaning. It talks about the kitchen being the center of the house, it is always decorated to go along with the seasons and the food that is created and baked to feed the family throughout the year. There are colors that represent different times of the year and you will always find the warm colors of changing seasons in the kitchen because the woman is customarily in charge of it. It talks about when they start decorating for different holidays and how long it will be before they come down. Neighbors compete against each other to have the most elaborate or most creative decorations for the holidays. It is a never ending battle to have the best of everything. Chapter three is about the winter and spring months. Winter has the shortest days and coldest days of the year. Christmas and Hanukkah are celebrated during this time. The Christmas tree is the symbol of Christmas that everyone knows. There are lights hanging on the house and throughout the yard to light the way. There are wreaths on the door and garland hung throughout the house. Red and green are the primary colors based around the Christmas season. Santa Claus is another symbol…...

Holiday

...During my last school holidays, I spent a few days at my cousin’s house at Morib, a well-known sea resort. I shall never forget that visit.  On the day I arrived at Morib, my cousin told me that he would do to make my stay there a very interesting one. He said that he would make a raft to use it in the sea. Then he would buy fishing net to catch some fish in the shallow water near the coast. When I heard all this, I was very delighted because it was one of the reasons that I had decided to visit my cousin. We then walked up to the beach which is near his house.  While we were there, sometime in the evening, the sea looked extremely beautiful. I saw the islands and hills in the distance, the birds in the air, and a few boys and girls playing on the beach. I also saw some fishermen coming out of the water with their catch. All this was indeed very interesting to look at.  On the next day, my cousin and I collected some tree trunks from the forest nearby. As my cousin’s house is close to the sea, we decided to make the raft on the beach itself. It took us almost the whole morning to make the raft. We then had our lunch and went to Banting, the nearest town, to buy fishing net. After that we returned to my cousin’s house.  In the evening we put the raft on the sea. The water was still high, but the raft floated quite well. My cousin and I sat on it and began to row it by using the oars that we had made ourselves. We felt very happy indeed and continued to row it. We......

Holidays

...Holidays “All work and no play makes jack a dull boy” Just as water and food is necessary for our body similarly holidays are also important for a healthy mind and physique. They provide relief from monotony of our daily routine. They are important for our mental and emotional well being. They are not only meant for enjoying but also for pursuing our hobbies and interests. During holidays, leisure replaces work as a priority. You are filled with the enthusiasm to explore, travel and learn. There are no rules for getting up in the morning and going to school. We are our own rulers as we manage our time according to our own wish. We play, visit places, pursue our hobbies and are relaxed. Holidays bring back to us natural vigour and cheerfulness. They relieve us of mental worry. Holidays are essential for workers in every department of life. They enable us to resume our work with renewed zeal and energy. Rest is enjoyable when it follows hard and strenuous work and hard work becomes easy and enjoyable when it comes after holidays. Holidays donot mean idleness. They donot mean sleeping and gosssiping. Idleness is not a thing of enjoyment. It is the root cause of all sins and evils. It is truly said, “An idle man's brain is a devil's workshop”. Wish to explore nature is in everybody's heart and holidays are best time to fullfill this desire. God also encourage us to travel. Holy Quran says, “Travel through the earth and see how He began the creation” (29:20). During holidays......

Independence Day Celebrations

...appearance. National flags flutter everywhere. People put on gala dresses and take part in the celebrations with great enthusiasm. The day is observed as a public holiday. This year the day was celebrated in our town with great eclat. The main celebrations were held in an open space. The function was presided over by the Minister for Education. First of all, he unfurled the National Flag. The police band played the National Anthem. School boys and girls sang national songs which were quite thrilling and inspiring. Then the Minister delivered an impressive speech. He said, "The National Flag is the symbol of our solidarity. It was by rallying under this flag that we won freedom. We have won political freedom but we have yet to win economic freedom. We must work and toil to make India great. India expects everybody to do his or her duty." The speech was followed by a march past by the military, the police, the N.C.C., the A.C.C., the boy scouts and the girl guides. The Minister took the salute. It was followed by picturesque tableaux from the history of India and the daily life in different parts of our vast country. In the afternoon, there were sports and matches. There were tea parties. People made merry. Sweets and fruits were distributed among boys and girls. There were songs and dances. There was a great commotion. People came from far-off villages to see the celebrations. All roads led to the Company Gardens where a big meeting was held in the evening.......

Holiday

...Ariel O’Brien 10/23 Every once a year, someone always has that one tradition they like to do on a holiday. Well, mine so happens to be on Christmas. Every year on Christmas, my family and I like to play fun games after opening our presents and done having dinner. Some may have the same thing every year just like my family, but in my opinion, I don’t think it’s the actual same. My family and I like to be different every year. Even though we still buy each other gifts, there are some things we just buy for the fun games! Every year we try to come up with a new game, sometimes we play cards to win a gift. The fun about winning one of those gifts is that it’s not something that you expected, for example, a tissue box or maybe even a candle because it can be random. It’s the best to have a random gift because later on, we actually might just use it, which makes the fun out of the random gift. People also have their own types of recipes, mine so ever tries different things every year because my family and I like to switch up things every once in awhile and try something new. We usually look up recipes in a cook book or the internet and would bring it to each other’s houses. My family and I like to try new things every year because we wouldn’t want to get bored with the same thing every year something new is also exciting! My family and I also like to visit each other’s houses so we wouldn’t get bored going to the same one house every year. Before......

Spanish Cultural Celebrations

...Cultural Essay #2 The Hispanic Cultural celebration I have chosen to write about is Las Piñatas. Tradition is defined as the transmission of beliefs, celebrations, customs, ideas, legends, practices, and stories. These beliefs and celebrations are passed from one generation to another usually in oral form. Traditions help Hispanic cultures connect with their people, family, community, and friends. These traditions are practiced and carried out in both Latin American Countries as well as the United States. A piñata is a very high colored party ornament that is made from cardboard or clay. Most are made out of cardboard because once made with this you can make into any shape, flower, favorite animal, or superheroes. It is believed that the famous traveler Marco Polo witnessed the Chinese creating wonderful figures of animals that were covered in paper and then strung up with harnesses. These figures were then used by these people to celebrate the New Year. Then as a result Marco Polo brought the customs of these celebrations back to parts of Europe where the idea spread to many cultures vastly. When this form of celebration was spread to parts of Spain the celebration of lent was then turned into a “fiesta”. The Spanish then celebrated the occasion called “The Dance of the Piñata”. They then used a clay object for the piñata called the “la olla” which is the Spanish word for pot. The piñata tradition is highly popular in Central America as well as other Latin......

Holidays

...During the holidays, we had plenty of time to do whatever we wanted. Some may apply for part-time jobs whereas others may be busy with their own CCAs. As for me, I went to participate in different marathon volunteering work. I volunteered for different races such as, Sundown Marathon, Great Eastern Women Run and the SGX Bull Charge Run. During different runs, I gained new experiences and realized that working and organizing such runs may not be an easy task and it requires a lot of team work to get this moving smoothly. At the end of the SGX Bull Charge Run, we were told to help disperse the crowd at the floating platform of Marina Bay as the event is over. Two aunties came up to me and told me they did not manage to use a single coupon as they came back too late. They asked me to allow them to join in the last queue at the Ice-Cream booth so that they could at least use two of their coupons. Taking pity on them, I reluctantly allowed them even though I had instructions not to allow anyone to queue anymore. After that, another two ladies came up to me and requested for the same thing, only they wanted to finish using two of their coupons. While my friend heard the conversation, she came up to the two ladies and told them no. My friend rolled her eyes at the two ladies which resulted them getting into an argument. I stepped in and explained to the two ladies while my friend went to cool off. I told them that we are not supposed to let anyone queue anymore and after a long......

Purim Celebrations

...Purim Celebrations: The Jewish Holy Day Introduction The Jewish culture considers its holy day’s as very scared days. The Jewish people are a people of celebration. The entire year long there are many holy days that the Jewish people love to celebrate. Seven of the major Jewish holy days are Shabbat, Purim, Passover, Yom Kippur, Hanukkah, Rosh Hashanah, and Shavuot. Each holiday has its own customs, presentations, and services that make it different from the other Jewish holidays. Out of these days, Purim is the greatest day of the year. It is not only a day of happiness and merriment, but it also has within it a tremendous opportunity to come close to Hashem. In celebrating Purim it is in the twelfth month, Adar, at sundown on the thirteenth day (Sasson, 2005). It is a fun holiday, full of parties, drinking, and other celebratory observances. People give baskets of food to friends and the needy persons, and drink wine with the loved ones. Discussion Purim is the holiday that the Jewish nation was saved from Haman's evil decree of annihilation. This is a Rabbinical holiday as it took place thousands of years after the giving of the Torah. What is not exactly known is the strong connection between this glorious holiday and the Torah. The Jews say they have arranged a mass massacre of the Persians in these spring days, Jews celebrate an important Jewish holiday, Purim.  It is celebrated for two days: 14th and 15th of the month of Adar on the......
