How can interaction among Drexel students be increased?

During the first team discussion, each one of us was considering a Drexel Issue that can be addressed to a solution. Among all possible topics we covered during our brain storming, we ended up with the question “How can interaction among Drexel students be increased?”. In our opinion Drexel University is a qualified place for education. However all of us were agreed when we talk about how weak the social interactions in between students at Drexel. Even though Drexel University offers many on and off campus activities, not many students is participating those activities. Most of them are living in between classes, dining hall and residential halls. According to what we heard from our friends about the other colleges, a friendlier environment for students to share, hang out and network exists. However the atmosphere in our campus is not that pleasant. According to most of people we have talked, Drexel’s ambiance is forcing people to live individual lives.
In our team website we are going to make the analysis of this social issue and reflect the public opinion about the student interactions. Then we will come up with possible solutions to the topic. Possible solutions coming from our first brain storming is listed below.
Solutions:
* Making more public places where students can hang out. * Create more attractive activities that same college students can interact, share and network * Orientations should also cover more opportunities (activities) for people to get to know each other. * Organize class trips: When students leave their surroundings and stay out for a few days with their friends and teachers, they develop qualities like self-confidence, responsibility, punctuality, self-reliance, tolerance and above all interaction among students. * The activities should be advertised to…...

Study Skills Among Students

...behind the deteriorating academic performance among college and university students. Those who lack that knowledge find themselves stuck when it comes to harnessing good time management. Many of these young adults are questioned at some point on how well they know about time management as they often encounter stress related problems which lead to failure in exams. 2.1 Causes 2.1.1 Stress Based on a survey conducted on the reasons of stress among first year students of Management and Science University (MSU), Shah Alam, Malaysia (2009) it was concluded that the major causes of stress were lack of sleep, academic work loads and social problems. This indirectly shows the lack of time management among students as these problems will be less likely to occur if their time were managed well. However it is not just the time management method the students fail to notice. The groups of students most prone to these problems are first year college students who are new to the environment, therefore more vulnerable to the changes from their high school. In college, students are bound to the illusion whereby there is an abundant source of time due to flexible time-tables, lengthy dead line for assignments and less daunting teachers (Katie Hern,2010). 2.1.2 Procrastination This causes procrastination which is the main catalyst for their failure in managing time. An analysis was done by York University (2010) which states that 40% of students from any university or college find......

How Can We Increase Student Literacy?

...How Can We Increase Student Literacy/Comprehension? People read for different reasons but ultimately the goal of reading is to derive meaning for a purpose whether it is for learning new skills, gathering facts or just for pleasure. If there is no comprehension, then reading is nothing more than following words on a page while sounding them out. The words don’t really have any meaning. That’s why literacy/comprehension skills are critical for students (especially ELLs) success in school as well as outside of school. Without these skills students cannot gather any information and use it to function efficiently and enjoy life. As educators, there are many strategies we can employ in our classrooms to ensure that students are developing literacy/comprehension skills. The strategies that I have found to be the most effective are sticky notes, visualizing and synthesizing frames. Students can use sticky notes in a variety of ways to help them increase their comprehension. One strategy is to have students read a story or passage and write down any questions they have about the story on sticky notes as they read. This strategy can be used before and during reading and it can be done individually or as a class. To use it before reading, have the students take a picture walk through a book and write down questions they have based on the pictures. Next, read through the book and have the students write down any new or different questions they have based on the text. ......

...Sleep Disorder Among Undergraduate Students 1. INTRODUCTION University life has presents many new and stressful challenges, such as reduced parental supervision which may increases freedom, self-responsibility, disorganized lifestyle, variable schedules, repeated deadlines, dormitory living, new social opportunity and academic obligations (Anbar and Slothower , 2006) . All of these caused students voluntary to alter their sleeping habits in which they tends to reduce their sleeping time from as recommended sleeping time 8 hours to in between 3 hours to 6 hours of sleeping time per day. This can lead to sleep disorder in which nowadays, insomnia and sleepiness are the most common complaints in general population (Watson, Goldberg, Arguelles, and Buchwald, 2006). Notably that, sleep quality refers to a composite of sleep quantity, length of time to fall asleep, number of awakenings at night, length of time to fall back asleep after awakening, feeling of fatigue or restfulness upon awakening in the morning and general satisfaction with sleep. According to Doghramji (2006), insomnia can be defined as complaint of disturbed sleep, manifested as difficulties in sleep initiation or sleep maintenance, and also refers as early awakenings. According to Kamel and Gammack (2006), there are several causes of insomnia which are including primary specific sleep disorders, physical illness, behavioral, environmental and medication. How a Teacher Can Influence Students

...An Elementary Teacher can influence his/her students’ academic performance by believing in them. Whether it’s the overachiever or the underachievers, students wants to feel cared and valued. There are many strategies to of expectations that can positively affect a student’s achievement in grade 3-5. We will look at 5 expectations that would positively influence student achievement; participating in class discussion, taking daily notes, communicating positively with each others in a group, partnering to complete cooperative assignments and completing work to earn passing scores. Having students participating in class discussion can help influence student achievement. The teacher can encourage & motivate students to share their thoughts &/or opinion. When a student knows what to expect and what is expected from them they are more engaged to learn. Students will also participate in classroom discussion when the material is related to their own lives. This can help improve a student’s grade because it encourages students to evaluate events, topics or results, others points of view and improve oral skills (Planning & Conducting Instruction 2009). Taking daily notes is another example that can help influence student achievement. Taking good notes can help improve a student’s learning by helping them remember the information. This can help improve a student’s grade because the students will be able to review for quizzes and test. Also, taking good notes can help improve a student’s......

Dating and Sex Among College Students

...Adam Nyre Sociology 101 Assignment 1 Dating and Sex among College Students Dating and Sex should be seen as an intertwined idea in society, but in today’s world and in the college world specifically these two ideas have different meanings and are practiced at different times. In order to prove my point I will have to conduct an experiment in which I discover two variables, alcohol and co-ed dorms, and through these variables I hope to achieve a conclusion that sex and dating are two different concepts when it comes to college students. In the beginning of my experiment I would first select a group of individuals to study, who would be male and female college students ranging from the ages of freshman to sophomore. With this I would introduce my first variable, that seems to have a big effect on college students, and that would be the use of alcohol. When people become intoxicated there decision-making becomes impaired and they might wake up in the morning with regrets. Most people are warned about rape and need to be around people to look after them when they are drunk. This usually doesn’t happen with people who have a partner and are dating. In order to discover if this idea correlates with the topic I would conduct a survey of college students both male and female, freshman to seniors, and see what their experiences tell us. To conduct a survey, I would have people answer the questions of: Have you ever had sex with someone random while sober? Have you...

Stress Management Among College Students

...people to succeed, but too much stress can affect one’s performance (http://www.chow.com). Greener as cited by de Jesus (2010:p.22) opined that most people can cope with and even need a certain amount of stress to perform to the peak of their ability but when demands for dealing with it outstrip resources, strength or time, it becomes dangerous. Feldman (2005) said that stress is a normal part of life and not a necessary a bad part of life. However, it is also clear that too much stress can take a toll on both physical and psychological health. According to Stuthers (2000), stress is what people feel when they are worried or uncomfortable about something. This worry in the mind can make the body feel bad. They may feel angry, frustrated, scared or afraid. These feelings can also lead to them having a stomachache or a headache (http://www.leland. stanford.edu). When they are stressed, their body responds as though they are in danger. It makes hormones that speed up the heart, makes breathe faster and gives burst of energy.
