FOR NICK Finally . . . Always

7:09 A.M.
Everyone thinks it was because of the snow. And in a way, I suppose that’s true. I wake up this morning to a thin blanket of white covering our front lawn. It isn’t even an inch, but in this part of Oregon a slight dusting brings everything to a standstill as the one snowplow in the county gets busy clearing the roads. It is wet water that drops from the sky—and drops and drops and drops—not the frozen kind. It is enough snow to cancel school. My little brother, Teddy, lets out a war whoop when Mom’s AM radio announces the closures. “Snow day!” he bellows. “Dad, let’s go make a snowman.” My dad smiles and taps on his pipe. He started smoking one recently as part of this whole 1950s, Father Knows Best retro kick he is on. He also wears bow ties. I am never quite clear on whether all this is sartorial or sardonic—Dad’s way of announcing that he used to be a punker but is now a middle-school English teacher, or if becoming a teacher has actually turned my dad into this genuine throwback. But I like the smell of the pipe tobacco. It is sweet and smoky, and reminds me of winters and woodstoves. “You can make a valiant try,” Dad tells Teddy. “But it’s hardly sticking to the roads. Maybe you should consider a snow amoeba.” I can tell Dad is happy. Barely an inch of snow means that all the schools in the county are closed, including my high school and the middle school where Dad works, so it’s an unexpected day off for him, too. My mother, who works for a travel agent in town, clicks off the radio and pours herself a second cup of coffee. “Well, if you lot are playing hooky today, no way I’m going to work. It’s simply not right.” She picks up the telephone to call in. When she’s done, she looks at us. “Should I make breakfast?” Dad and I guffaw at the same time. Mom makes cereal and toast. Dad’s the cook in the family. Pretending…...

Robotic Surgery to Stay or Not to Stay

...Robotic Surgery To Stay Or Not Too Stay The use of surgical robots has increased greatly and is continuing to grow. Although these robots are already being used they have advantages as well as disadvantages. Surgical robots are only going to improve the outcomes for the patients, surgeons, and hospitals and will keep improving as time goes on, overcoming the disadvantages that are seen today. Many different types of robots are being used to carry out surgical procedures such as the Endowrist, AESOP, Zeus, PROBOT, ROBODOC, SOCRATES and the da Vinci being the most popular. Also there are many specific types of surgical procedures that are being carried out robotically such as urological, gynecological, cardiac, and general surgeries. “Shorter hospital stays, smaller incisions, less blood loss, quicker recovery, less painful, reduced rates of bacterial infections and blood transfusions, eliminating the surgeons hand tremors, more comfort and decrease in fatigue for the surgeon, 3D view, superior suturing skills, reverse fulcrum” are some of the advantages that affect the patient. Disadvantages involved with robot assisted surgery are “high cost, the large size of the robot, lack of compatible instruments and equipment, lengthy set up times, longer operative times, lack of haptic tactile feedback,” but are believed to disappear with more research and time. Surgical robots could be the most successful and most used technology in surgery in the future. “A surgical......

How I Feel About Moms That Stay Home

...HOW I FEEL ABOUT MOMS THAT STAY HOME Shane Sorensen Professor Barbara Hammons CHDV 115 6-10pm Mon, Wed HOW I FEEL ABOUT MOMS THAT STAY HOME Being a stay at home mother would seem like such a wonderful thing to enjoy, but in a world with many expectations and economic demands, it looks as though homes these days are missing one important ingredient, the mother. The mother is such an important role in a child’s life that without her needed nurturing, the child’s life could change dramatically for the worse. In what ways are mothers important? That’s what I would like to discuss, because there are many benefits to having a stay at home mom. The first way that comes to my mind is that the bond between mother and child is vital to the child’s mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual growth. First, let’s focus on their mental growth. Picture a child waking up every morning to a different face, never being able to bond or create a foundation for himself/herself. When that child gets into school, and tries to solve a problem, or fix a dispute between a friend, what if they don’t have the coping skills to work at that problem or relationship when they know that things in their own life are never routed or fixed steadily,(they won’t feel the importance of having steady lasting relationships etc.) they’ll never be able to develop the important skills like problem solving and bonding. Now I would like to focus on the physical aspects of a child’s......

Emigration – to Stay or to Leave Bulgaria

...Emigration – to stay or to leave Bulgaria More than a decade has passed since the peak of emigration from Bulgaria following communism's fall, but many of the country's most enterprising and best-educated young are still keen to seek a life abroad. And that is one of the most serious problems Bulgaria faces last few years. 12,1 % of the whole Bulgarian population or 937 341 people live in foreign countries. According to the World Bank this number of emigrants now is much higher, because the last information about the problem dates back to one or two years ago. Motives to migrate can be either incentives attracting people away, known as pull factors, or circumstances encouraging a person to leave, known as push factors, for example: |Push factors |Pull factors |Economic reasons |Higher incomes |Disappointment with Bulgaria |Better availability of employment |Career development |Better medical facilities |Adventure/change and curiosity |Better education facilities |Relatives abroad |Political stability ...

Nothing Gold Can Stay vs. I Used to Live Here Once

...Nothing Gold Can Stay (Frost) VS. I Used to Live Here Once (Rhys) Jason W. Miller Ashford University ENG125: Introduction to Literature Professor Patricia Lake December 3, 2012 Death and impermanence is always full of sorrow. I have chosen Death and Impermanence as my theme to discuss, not because of tragedy I’ve experienced, but instead because it’s an interestingly complex theme. “Nothing Gold Can Stay” and “I Used to Live Here Once” could not be no more different in their visual form than they already are; however, they both represent the theme through common emotions and mood of the literary works. Throughout my essay I will explain the relevance of the two works, and authors, as well as the differences. The formalist approach will be my choice of critical analysis of the two works, which will aid in forming my comparison and contrast of both works as well. “The poem of the Robert Frost, “Nothing Gold Can Stay” is discussing the beauty of life’s wonderful but short-lived treasures, as example chasing dreams and spending time with loved ones. It is illustrated by Frost those treasures in the world related to the nature through the use of metaphors, imagery, diction, and allusion. The poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” helps open one’s eyes to the harsh realities of nature’s path and although we must all succumb to the laws of nature, it is these unbreakable laws that make life so treasured (Shmoop, 2010). On the other side the literature “I Used to Live......

Analysis of If I Stay

...Analysis of If I Stay If I Stay by Gayle Forman is a very unforgettable novel. The story is about a seventeen- year- old girl named Mia who has a perfect life. She has a supporting family, a caring best friend, a beautiful boyfriend, and a strong interest in classical music which lead to her applying to Juilliard. One snow day, Mia’s family decides to take a drive to their grandparent’s house for the day. The roads are very slippery which causes a huge car crash killing Mia’s family instantly. When emergency help arrives, Mia is still alive. She is rushed to the hospital in a deep state of a coma. Her body is left in a sleep-like state but her mind is still aware of her surroundings causing her to walk around without anyone seeing her. Throughout the novel, Mia recalls many memories of her life before the crash which helps her to choose to leave or stay. If I Stay is a good novel because it contains well-developed characters, themes that are relatable, and several interesting incidents that influence the outcome of the novel. One of the elements that made this novel memorable is the well- developed characters. In If I Stay, Mia is a hardworking cellist in a rock-n-roll family. She had everything a normal teenage girl would have: a loving family, and adoring boyfriend, and a future full of success for the future in music. But, a tragic crash turns Mia’s normal existence upside down. She is left in a coma state that lets her spirit self walk around the hospital while her...

Tiffanysum1Home Stay

...“Home Stay”, which is a look at the odd relationship between a Japanese-an Asian man-and the parents of his Canadian ex-wife, manages to portray a mutual incomprehension born of culture shock or imagined difference. In the plot, Jun’s deep misgivings about his place in the world are resurrected in five frozen goldfish. Through the goldfish as a hint combining Jun’s living details or behavior at Canadian home, the story descripts that Jun’s loneliness with homesick, his unadaption which he needs to be accustomed to well water, butter and no chopsticks, his inhibition and depression like he is the frozen goldfish. The family is multi-racial. Canadian couple treats Jun well, but just like a pet, an injured animal, which results from the way they deal with him is a Canadian way not a Japanese way. Jun pretends he is calm to face everything, trying to ignore his own feeling of living in the unfamiliar place. He tries to act with caution through organizing stuffs in Gloria’s kitchen in their original place. Plus Jun tries not to cause offense to Karl through avoiding sitting on his recliner like private property. The metaphoric frozen goldfish is just Jun himself, now he is frozen in Canada, and he needs refresh. Since the culture shock, weird frozen goldfish confuses him weather or not it is a Canadian custom, making him abnormal thinking method. When he finds the fish alive, the deep constrained emotions erupt and he could not control himself, which he did very well in......

If I Stay

...I only learned today that "contraband" during the Civil War referred to runaway slaves who were liberated when they appeared in Union military camps. This was about the time of the Emancipation Proclamation. President Lincoln was hesitant to make the war about human rights, knowing that if he did, states that had slaves and were loyal to the Union, would join the Confederacy if they believed their right to hold slaves was threatened. However, when approximately 600,000 slaves escaped to Union territories and army camps, the military leaders had to decide whether to keep them or send them back to their owners. Most decided to keep them, and declared that they were "contraband," seized during a military encounter. Many of these former slaves joined the Union cause to fight against the South. Ultimately, the Emancipation Proclamation was finally adopted, freeing all slaves taken during military defeats of the enemy; states that were a part of the Union freed their slaves; and, the passage of the 13th Amendment outlawed the keeping of slaves. With the information above, "contraband" had new meaning for me when I read Louisa May Alcott's "My Contraband," also known as "The Brothers." Ms. Alcott was a staunch abolitionist and feminist. She actually served as a nurse in a Union hospital in Georgetown in D.C. for several weeks. In light of this, the story takes on implications of possibly being a story that did or could have actually occurred, something she might have......

To Stay or to Leave

...To Stay or to Leave? Christine Amargo SOC 120 Intro to Ethics and Social Responsibility Denise Antoon April 21, 2014 In the United States of America, we face many different ethical problems each and every day. Some of the ethical problems that we have to deal with are hunger, war, poverty, crime, and terrorism, but the biggest ethical issue the United States has to deal ethical with is immigration. There are many issues dealing with immigrations, such as immigration laws. Many questions come up about this topic in today's society, like how do we stop immigration or do we even stop it? Not all immigrants are bad some are useful to the United States; we have to remember that the first people in America were immigrants. We do not have the right to deport others back to their native land. Many people from different countries try so hard to get to United States looking for a better life. There are many reasons why immigrants migrate to different countries, especially the United States of America home of the free. Some reasons are employment opportunities or careers that are not available in their native land, improved quality of life, and refuge from war. Most immigrants focus on making sure their children have a better life they had; those people show the theory of utilitarianism. "Utilitarianism argues that, given a set of choices, the act we should choose is that which produces the best results for the greatest number affected by that choice" (Mosser, 1.6). These......

China Stay-at-Home Children

...have to stay in the rural area because their parents cannot afford to raise them in the city. Normally, these parents come back home once a year and stay for less than one week. So, children hardly have any time to spend with their parents during their childhood. According to a recent survey, there are more than 61 million (equal to the whole population of the United Kindom) stay-at-home children in China. 57.2% of them are taken care of by one of their parents, but for 42.8% of them, both parents are absent. Of the children living without their parents, 79.7% of them are taken care of by their grandparents,13% are cared for by the parents’ friends or relatives, and for 7.3% of them it is not known who is taking care of them. As we all know, an adult’s care is important to children. Without parents to take care of them, the mental health status of the stay-at-home children may be a big hidden trouble in the future. Some people think these children still have grandparents or relatives taking care of them. However, their grandparents also need to do farm work, and they lack the energy to take care of the children. As for their relatives, they also have children, and, normally, in rural areas, each family has at least two kids. The relatives would not have the energy to take care of all of the children. I figure that there are three ways to help solve this problem. The first is to promote rural area economy development. The most important reason causing the problem of......

To Stay or Go

...My Own or Stay At Home? I live at home with my parents. I live for free, I pay no bills. The refrigerator is always full, my clothes are always clean as a matter of fact I constantly come home to find new clothing on my bed, compliments of my mom. I have an IPhone 6 Plus and have never paid a phone bill. I have my own bedroom with Direct TV and my own bathroom. I pay no rent. I have a 2015 Audi A3 with full insurance coverage, and I have never paid a penny towards either. What will become me of if I move out on my own? My so-called friends keep telling me I should move out, get a place on my own. In their opinion I should be out on my own, living my life and living it up. I have convinced myself to some degree that their opinion is right, that I am nineteen and I should be out on my own. That my parents have no right to tell me what to do, or how to live, or to expect anything from me. My parents with their rules to do well in college, maintain a part time job, stay our of trouble and to please keep my room clean are just way too much to expect from me. I should be able to screw up if I want, I tell myself, and have an attitude because I am a man now. I can treat people however I want. I believe that for now I need to get my act together. I need to realize what have and start appreciating all that my parents have given to me and continue to give. I must better assess the opinions and suggestions of my so-called friends, as none have the benefits that I have......

Stay in School

...what they teach in school needs to be changed to something that would be more helpful. I wasn't taught how to get a job but I can remember dissecting a frog. I wasn't taught how to pay taxes but I know loads about Shakespeare's classics I was never taught how to vote , they devoted that time to defining isotopes.I wasn't taught how to look after my health but I know that mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. Never spent a lesson on current events instead forced into studying The Old American West. I was never taught what laws there are. I was not taught the laws for the country I live in but I know how Henry the VIII killed his women. Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced ,beheaded, survived. i am Glad that's in my head instead of financial advice. I was shown the wavelengths of different hues of light but I was never taught my human rights. Apparently there's 30, do you know them? I don't. We should be able to recite them by heart but we never learned our own rights. I know igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks.Yet I don't know anything about trading stocks Or how money works at all - where does it come from? Who controls it? How does the thing that motivates the world function? Never taught how to budget and disburse my earnings. I was too busy rehearsing cursive. Didn't learn how much it costs to raise a kid or what an affidavit is.instead I spent the days on what the quadratic equation is negative b plus or minus the square root of b squared minus 4ac over......

To Stay or Not to Stay on a Reservation

...Native Americans who decide to stay on the reservation often do so at a great cost. The cost is one perhaps more evident to a materialistic American than someone true to the value system of many Native American tribes. The cost is measured in terms of career potential, the ability to experience cultural diversity, and income. Jobs are scarce on many reservations and contact with outsiders somewhat limited. This means that Native Americans are prone to having what might be considered a lower quality of life than if they were to pursue educations and careers outside the reservation. In contrast, Native Americans who do stay on the reservation are quick to list the many invaluable benefits of remaining. The richness and distinctiveness of a tribe's cultural identity is a priceless treasure to those who remain to absorb it. In addition, the shift in values from the materialistic, ambition driven American value system to a more family and spiritually oriented system is rewarding on a personal if not financial level. The reservation, even one which is several thousand members strong, is likely to feel more like an extended family in contrast to the lack of connection which is common to big cities full of migratory individuals. Considering the benefits and drawbacks of remaining on a reservation, I would be honored if I had the opportunity to live on one, and I would chose to stay. The uniqueness of the reservation life, which admittedly is full of challenges, still has the......
