The Alcatel- Lucent Merger; What went wrong? 1. The conditions and negotiation factors that pushed forth the 2006 merger that were not present in the 2001 merger were in 2001 Lucent’s executives wanted the deal as a “merger of equals” rather than a takeover by Alcatel. However in 2006 Tchuruk agreed to pay 10.6 billion euro for Lucent to create the world’s largest telecommunications equipment maker. Tchuruk said the combined company would realize 1.4 billion euro in cost savings over the following 3 years, but they had to cut 9,000 jobs. 2. According to the company's website (http://www2.alcatel-lucent.com/news-center/) it appears that the combined merger is doing very well. Recently on September 13, 2012, Alcatel-Lucent was ranked Technology Super sector leader by Dow Jones with a score of 87/100. This is the second year in a row that the company is recognized in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI). The Super sector Leader report highlighted: "growing environmental challenges and resource constraints, Alcatel-Lucent has continuously developed and implemented globally recognized innovations in eco-sustainable communication technologies.”. 3. I believe the merger is "a giant transatlantic experiment in multicultural diversity" because you have to vastly different cultures, Franco-American merging into one combined companies. Although the companies combined experience some cultural clashes but at the end were able to come together and become a successful company. After evaluating the comment that he merger is a “giant transatlantic experiment in multicultural diversity”, the evidence that the company would run into cross-cultural problems since the merger took place in 2006 was definitely there. ...This case study is an excellent example of how different types of parties can be brought together in a large scale transaction and how the original energy of those early meetings can be lost over time. I imagine that when Anthony Athanas was purchasing those old piers back in the 1960s many, if not all, of his colleagues, friends, and family members told him that he was off his rocker. I’m sure Athanas was looking at this land as his family’s ticket to financial prosperity and somewhat of a legacy that he could leave to his descendants for years and years to come. One of the items I wish the case would have divulged is the amount of money that Athanas had invested in the properties. For me this information would have given an insight to his net worth and how much he had riding on this investment. I assume it was substantial given his actions later in the process. Twenty years later Athanas’ dreams came true and all those naysayers were more than likely green with envy. The amount of pride Athanas’ had in his investment at that moment had to have been insurmountable. Being approached by a big time real estate development company and their extremely wealthy client, Hyatt Corporation, must have made Athanas feel larger than life and made him feel like something he isn’t, which is a developer himself. ...A CASE STUDY OF PARTNERING IN LEAN CONSTRUCTION Per Erik Eriksson Management and Business Administration, Luleå University of Technology ABSTRACT Lean construction is a relatively immature literature field in need of unbiased theoretical reasoning and case studies in order to investigate how lean thinking can be applied in a construction project context. The purpose of this paper is to increase the understanding of how various measures of lean thinking can be implemented in a construction project and how these measures work. In order to enhance unbiased theoretical reasoning a frame of reference is first developed through a literature review of peer-reviewed journal articles. The empirical part of the research utilises a lean construction pilot project as a case study. Empirical data was mainly collected through a series of three questionnaire surveys, responded by project participants that were involved in the lean implementation effort (approximately 30 responses) and three follow-up workshops in which the key individuals from all partner companies participated (15-20 individuals). The author of this paper functioned as a facilitator and action researcher, responsible for the design and analysis of the surveys and for planning and facilitating the workshops. Such “no-shows” are an obviously undesirable occurrence where they can be avoided. In the similar environment of appointments for physicians, survey results show patient waiting time as one of the top three differentiators for “best practice” offices versus average offices [3]. This suggests that for health care systems where patients have a choice of health care providers, shorter waiting times are apparently a competitive advantage. -1- How much waiting at an outpatient clinic is acceptable depends on many factors. Individual “patience”, the type of clinic, and the pleasantness of the waiting area all affect patients’ tolerance for waiting. As Cartwright & Windsor [4] note, patients will accept short waiting periods. However, there is a limit to the length that patients will accept graciously. The study by Huang [5] found that patients who arrived on time for appointments were satisfied with wait times of 37 minutes or less. In 1991 the UK’s National Health Service’s Patient’s Charter set a 30 minute target for appointment waiting times [6].
