Chapter 1 Introduction Overview of Organization

The Logistics Squadron is a consolidated logistics squadron providing supply, vehicle and readiness support to the Wing, tenant units and agencies. The guiding principles utilized in the performance of the organization are as follows; a. Mission Statement: A military organization dedicated to providing logistical support to our Joint Service Community. b. Vision Statement: Provide quality service to our customers in support of their missions. c. Values: Integrity, Accountability, Teamwork and Excellence. The squadron provides direction and management of base logistics processes related to cargo mapping, equipment, fueling operations, vehicle dispatch and deployment planning. The function of the squadron is to manage the overall supplies of the wing and effectively manage its inventories. It is a part of the Air National Guard, Wing with over 150 personnel encompassing, active military, traditional guardsmen and civilians.

The Logistics Readiness Officer who: a. Provides oversight of the internal storage and external shipping of logistics supply activities for the Wing b. Is responsible for managing and staffing the Material Management Flight for the logistics supply and information sections c. Actively oversees and manages proper implementation of unit programs for supply and the issue of all mobility bag assets d. Administers procedures, programming and staffing of individuals, supplies and parts for A-10 and KC-135 Aircrafts.

The inability of the higher command to provide a stable environment of a strong leadership perpetuates the fundamental weaknesses within the current Logistics Readiness Squadron. Over the past 3 ½ years the squadron has had 5 different commanders. In that 3 ½ years only one commander was in place…...

The study of leadership and its styles over the years has proven to be quite a challenge owing to its abstract nature and differences in perception, making an objective discourse rather difficult. Over the years, different researchers have come up with models of their own, as they attempted to explain leadership and the various roles it encompasses. In regard to the mentor specifically, five major responsibilities have been identified that he or she is expected to fulfill: to instruct, to sponsor, to guide, to set an example for, and to council (Rogers, 1986; Schemm, R.L. and Bross, T., 1995). It is preferred that mentors first teach the student and then gradually step back and let the student take control of the therapy, thus allowing them to make decisions as a clinician (Nolinske, 1995, p. 42). The success of the inexperienced practitioner is dependent on the professional feedback given by the mentor serving as his or her respectable guide (Schemm, R.L. and Bross, T., 1995, p. 33). Mentors greatly influence what mentees do or do not learn during the course of the relationship, especially when it comes down to individual experience. Goode (2012) believes that it is the responsibility of the mentor to encourage learning, as well as identify each mentee’s individual skills and abilities, personal goals, personal needs, and medical necessities that can make the learning process difficult if ignored (p. 33). ...Assessing your own leadership capability and performance Review the prevailing leadership styles in the organisation In this section I will be looking at the main leadership styles in my organisation and assessing the positive and negative effects these styles can have. Pacesetting leadership style – A phrase to best describe a pacesetting leader is “do as I do, now”. This style involves a drive to achieve goals and achieve results. Pacesetting leaders lead by example. A pacesetting leader sets both high standards for themselves and the people that they are leading. A key skill for this style is a “lead by example” approach to work. They expect their followers to carry out their tasks to the same level as themselves. Leaders of this type are always quick to identify employees that are not keeping up with expectations, and they are told improve their performance. Pacesetting leaders don’t give their employees much positive feedback as it would take up time that they could be using to carry out their tasks and often jump in and take over their employee’s tasks if they believe that progress isn’t quick enough. A positive of this style is that they are able to achieve results quickly and efficiently. At least in the short term, there employees will be an energetic group with great performance in terms of both completing tasks well and a high quality of work. In earlier times, words meaning “head of state”, “military commander”, “princeps”, “proconsul”, “chief”, or “king” were common in societies. There are many different definitions of leadership as there are persons who have attempted to define the concept. There are 12 definitions about leadership. Leadership as a Focus of Group Processes, leader as a focus of group change, activity, and process. Leader are influenced by the needs and wishes of the group members; in turn, they focus the attention and release the energies of group members in a desired direction. The leader may not be separated from the group, but may be treated as a position of high potential in the field. When conceived in terms of the dynamics of human social behavior, leadership is a function of needs existing within a given situation, and consists of a relationship between an individual and a group. ...Different people have come up with several definitions to the term leadership. Leadership may be said to be a social process influences, by way of controlling, motivating and actual leading of other people to pursue a duty or a task. There are various theories that have come up with the study of leadership. These theories look into different traits carried by leadership such as power, charisma, involvements among others. Different theories speak of different styles of leadership each with their own merits and demerits. Authoritative leadership can also be called autocratic leadership. The leader has absolute power in making decisions. Autocratic leaders are also mostly involved in other undertakings alongside leadership, and they scrutinize on duties to the least detail. Autocratic leadership reflects ancient forms of leadership, for example, among early tribes. The advent of democracy in today’s world gives a negative touch to this theory. Nevertheless, it also has its merits as well, and there are several areas in today’s world that it can be well implemented. This theory works well in situations where absolute control is important, which is a good check for errors. This leadership applies in rigid environments where there is no room for error. ...Qualities of Leadership Leadership is a quality that is not given, but is achieved from personal power and having the strength and self-determination to make decisions for a group and being able to live with those decisions. Leadership consists of many aspects including thinking, imagining, innovation, the ability to lead in a war time atmosphere and possibly having religious influence. In Udall Brady’s short story “He Becomes Deeply and Famously Drunk” the author shows how even a small Spanish man can possess great leadership qualities. Apparently all the other ranch hands do not teach the narrator a whole lot about being a rancher. Instead, Jesus, who is a part time worker on the ranch, actually teaches the narrator the ins and outs of ranching. Brady tells this by saying “He’s worked for Mr. Platt off and on for a good many years and while the other here resented me, pissed on me for being young and ignorant, enjoyed watching me make a fool of myself, Jesus helped me out from the start, taking time to show how to dally a rope, say, or throw calf for branding.” (Brady 535-536) This statement in and of itself shows Jesus’ leadership skills, because even when the other ranch hands shunned him for being young and inexperienced, Jesus was there to back him up and be a friend and lead him into becoming a great rancher. To be a good and effective leader it is my belief that you must adapt your leadership style to the people whom you are leading and the outcome you wish to achieve. I will now outline some of these styles and how I feel they should be adapted. A leader should be able to take responsibility. An Autocratic leader is one who operates under the assumption that the buck stops with them. Autocratic leaders excel at setting objectives for teams and individuals, but they are inexperienced at feeding back the team’s views to higher management.
