The Humanistic-Encouraging Manager
Humanistic-Encouraging managers inspire their subordinates to think, grow and take responsibility for themselves. They do this by demonstrating belief in what their staff members can accomplish. These managers build problem-solving skills and confidence by asking insightful questions designed to help subordinates arrive at their own solutions.
Humanistic-Encouraging managers consistently show faith in their subordinates' ability to improve themselves, and actively support their efforts. As a management style, Humanistic-Encouraging is highly effective at obtaining measurable, bottom-line results: subordinates easily develop respect for these managers, and are motivated to achieve and sustain peak performance levels.

Your tendency to become preoccupied with your own problems can make it hard for you to demonstrate concern for others' needs.

The Affiliative Manager

...LSI survey MGMT 591 Leadership and Organizational Behavior The Life Styles Inventory (LSI) is a self-assessment diagnostic instrument that measures 12 key thinking patterns, or "styles". The LSI promotes performance change and improvement by increasing personal understanding of one's thinking and behavior. By responding to these 240 inventory items, individuals learn exactly where they need to focus their development efforts, without ambiguity or guesswork. The results of the self-description are plotted on a circular graph for easy visualization of how the individual thinks and behaves in the 12 LSI styles. This profile acts as a personalized developmental needs assessment, calling attention to the individual's strengths as well as areas needing improvement. After using the Life Styles exercise and receiving my results, I feel that I have been able to accurately analyze my behaviors in the workplace and in my personal life. I noticed how my personal thinking style has influenced my ability to be effective in my work and as a result, there are some things that can be improved upon. This exercise has allowed me to look back and critically analyze my behaviors and thinking styles and assess how they affect me in day-to-day activities. I have been able to identify the mechanisms by which the relationships I have with my family and friend have manipulated my personal behavior and lifestyle over the years.Taking the Life Styles Inventory (LSI) survey has really made me......

...Personal Thinking Styles Pursuant to my Life Styles Inventory (LSI): Self-description results my primary personal thinking style is “Avoidance” with a percentile score of 55% and my back-up thinking style is “Conventional” with a percentile score of 50%. As I reviewed my circumplex I became rather disturbed as I tried to understand the “Avoidance” scale. The LSI description of Avoidance states that the this thinking style is defined by tendencies of denying responsibility and your behavior, feelings of guilt and an obsession of your own concerns. I have trouble relating to these characteristics as I hardly stray from responsibility if it’s warranted or of having guilty feelings and am definitely not obsessive over my own concerns. In fact, I always own up to my responsibilities and/or any mess ups either at work or at home. I have not been in a role of a manager yet have supervised a number of interns and I have never been threatened by or with any responsibilities pushed upon me. In fact, I almost always took same on with confidence and a sense of dedication. I do agree with the assessment that at times I may not give myself full credit where I completely deserve it; I have attributed this more to humility than to insecurity. Although I am not hard on myself for mistakes and misjudgments I do, however, tend to dwell on things far longer than necessary. For example, if during a presentation I stumbled in answering a question I would live with the embarrassment of......

...A Life Styles Inventory Awakening The Life Styles Inventory (LSI) Self-Description helps individuals recognize certain thinking styles within themselves to help better understand how they can improve in personal and professional relationships. Each of the 12 styles are given a number from 1-12 and are arranged in a circular graph much like a clock. The styles are then grouped into three distinct categories: Construction Styles, Passive/Defensive Styles and Aggressive/Defensive Styles. After taking the LSI myself, I found it to be somewhat eye opening in certain categories. The LSI identified my primary thinking style at the 7 o’clock position as Oppositional, which is in the Aggressive/Defensive Style. Against the 9,207 people of which have taken the test, I scored 84% higher in this section. This indicates that this is a strong personality trait and very much like me. Some of the traits of this behavior are: the ability to ask tough questions; a negative, cynical attitude; a sarcastic sense of humor and some one who typically loves to argue. Many of these descriptions I would consider to be very accurate when it comes to describing me. The one that most closely relates to myself is the sarcastic sense of humor. For as long as I can remember I have had (and implemented regularly) a sarcastic sense of humor. I have also been told that I love to argue just for the sake of an argument. I see this regularly with close friends and loved ones. I believe this manifests mostly to......

My second top style was the affiliative style in which I scored 37 and placed in the top 90 percent of persons who took the interpretation. After contemplating my work / leadership style(s) and comparing how I interact with co- workers and subordinates, I agree with the results and will further discuss my reasoning in this paper. First, I will discuss the humanistic- encouraging style. As depicted on the description of the humanistic- encouraging style, scoring high on the humanistic – encouraging scale is “positive, healthy and effective”. (International, 2011) The high score shows that I am “sensitive to people’s needs, and will devote energy to counseling and coaching others”. (International, 2011) The scale itself measures the takers interest in people and the tendency to care about others. It also measures the takers ability to encourage others to improve. As stated on the description, since I scored as high as I did I should “ have an unconditional positive regard for others”. (International, 2011). I completely agree with the results of the survey and am......

In reference to my Humanistic-Encouraging score, I believe the survey could not be more correct. My results state that I believe that I can help people improve, and enjoy guiding and supporting their efforts and that I tend to use my skills regular and proficiently. Also, it indicates that seeing the best in people is important to me. In fact, my ability to combine an acceptance of others as they are with the inspiration and encouragement they need to become even better is what might me makes me a valuable mentor, manager, co-worker worker, and friend. I agree with the results because there is nothing I would not do for my friends and I accept them just as they are. I have known my best friend for 17 years now and one of the reasons that I love her so much is because she is so different from me. She is naturally loud, always dancing and into fashion. She is what I would be if there was another Lilly. I am more of bookworm than she is but while we were in middle school and in high school together, I would help her out to achieve her potential. She just needs a little......

...Every manager supposed to know all of his strengths and weaknesses knowing that he/she will be dealing with people of all different behaviors. Knowing your strengths and weakness is the key asset to successfully manage an organization. For this purpose Dr. J. Clayton Lafferty developed The Life Style Inventory (LSI) for self-improving purposes for the reasons of increasing a personal and professional effectiveness. The LSI measures 12 specific styles of patterns of thinking that can either help or hinder a person from reaching his or her potential. The 12 styles measured by LSI are organized into three general clusters: Constructive, which includes: achievement, self-actualizing, humanistic-encouraging, and affiliate thinking style. Passive/Defensive, which includes: approval, conventional, dependent, and avoidance thinking styles. Aggressive/Defensive, which includes: oppositional, power, competitive, and perfectionistic thinking styles. After honestly answering 240 questions I received the results that my primary personal style is achievement where I received the highest score of 95%. This style shows the following characteristics: focusing on achieving self-set goals, believes that individual effort counts, commits to make things better, take on challenging tasks and prefer to setting and accomplishing realistic goals rather than goals imposed by others. My secondary personal style is self-actualizing. This style shows the following characteristics: self-respect,......

...The LSI personality ``test was very impressive, especially the accuracy of my daily behavior styles. I think most people that intend on spending long periods of time dealing with the public and or directing and managing people for any long periods of time need to take this exercise. This exercise not only allows for you to understand behaviors, there is a better chance for you to also see why people do what they do. This exercise showed me in detail my behavior styles but also allowed me to see in further detail more than just the obvious way of being, this test allowed me to look in to more areas I hopefully develop. My strengths are power, self –Actualizing and conventional. Areas I may need to improve on are approval, avoidance and oppositional. I was surprise of the results that appear to be not very descriptive of me which included Competitive although the score was not tremendously high it does not appear low enough. Some of the key lessons learned in taking the LSI is, think about the question before you answer, and answer the questions honestly, these types of exercises are not only a benefit to you it’s a benefit for your work and your personal life as well. I have set some of the goal dates to look into a few of my behaviors that I would like to correct the most; they are within the 8, 6, and 10 O’ clock areas. I have set an attainable time frame to try and work on these areas not just because they showed up on the exercise but because they have been long......

...RUNNING HEAD: LSI Paper I am charged with the task of completing the Life Styles Inventory Survey to give a self-description of my thinking styles. The purpose of this assignment is to determine the impact that the personal styles have on my management style and to identify which one of my thinking styles may be reducing my overall effectiveness. After completing the survey, my circumplex shows that my primary thinking style is the “Conventional Style”(4 o’clock) and my backup thinking style is the “Power Style” (8 o’clock). I agree with the results of the conventional thinking style, but, I do not fully agree with the results of the power thinking style. According to the LSI results, the conventional thinking style is one that measures our inclination to act in a compliant way. Conventional thinkers worry about adhering to rules and established procedures. According to the LSI results, when we depend on on established procedures in determining how we do things, we risk losing our sense of uniqueness and individuality. I would have to agree with the results of this survey that I am a conventional thinker. As a child, my parents had very strict household rules that, simply, were not to my benefit to break. Therefore, I often abided by the rules. I think this is why I tend to do things strictly by the book. Doing things by the book gives me a sense of security in knowing that I followed the policy, in case something goes wrong. As a conventional thinker, I......

...after I completed the LSI( Life Style Inventory) assessment and read the results I had to pull myself away from my work to really think about my results. When I took the assessment I told myself I wanted to be as honest as I possible could, so perhaps I might get honest answers as to how I think and behave. Then answer question like, how do the ways I think and behave affect my management style for now and in the future? Knowing yourself is important to every aspect of your like. I spend a lot of time trying to get a better understanding for why I respond to certain situation in certain ways. For example, when, when I’m asked to do anything at work I immediately say, “no problem”. My coworkers jokingly call me the teacher’s pet or they say thinks like, “Your really trying to keep your job”. Some will even wink and say things like, “Job security”. I smile at their jest. I’m sure that it comes from a good place, but none of what they say can be further from the truth. I whole-heartedly want to do what ever it takes to help get the job done. Which is why I found the result of my LSI assessment so interesting. The LSI determined that my primary style of thinking is Constructive, which according to the LSI is a style of thinking that is self-enhancing and contributes to my satisfaction, ability to effectively work with others, develop healthy relationships, and to proficiently accomplish task. My back up thinking style passive/defensive, which according the LSI represents......

...LSI Paper Introduction The Life Style Inventory (LSI) is a survey in which one can identify their underlying thoughts and motivations that may shape their individual behaviors. The LSI is a series of self identifying questions which are scored and results tabulated. The results are scored in 3 major categories; constructive styles, passive/defensive styles, and aggressive/defensive styles. The three major categories are then broken down further into twelve subcategories. Enclosed will be a copy of the results of the LSI I have taken. Also, in the following, I will identify my primary and back up thinking styles and any styles that may be limiting my professional effectiveness and ways to overcome those obstacles. I will also discuss the impacts of my thinking styles on the four functions of management. Finally I will discuss how these thinking styles were developed in my life. Personal Thinking Styles My personal thinking style results varied and were extremely surprising. However, there were two particular areas which stood out the most. My primary thinking style is oppositional. This is a subcategory of the aggressive/defensive style. The oppositional style means that I tend to be aggressive and defensive when disagreeing with others. According to the results of the survey, I would rather put someone down in order to make myself feel better. Oppositional people also tend to have a strong need for recognition which may result in sarcastic responses. ......

...LSI Paper Gloria Guzman GM591 Leadership and Organizational Behavior Professor Barbara Ward September 2, 2011 Personal Thinking Styles Well hello Gloria Guzman, it is so nice to visit you again. That is exactly what I thought when I completed my Life Style Inventory and saw my report. In my life time I have taken a few self-evaluating, personality-leadership-management surveys and I must say I always learn something new about myself and witness growth and maturity. My LSI primary style is Affiliative with a score of 36 out of 40 and an 83 percentile. My results are shown in appendix 1. Both the high score and the high percentile tell me that this style strongly describes how I see myself and behave. The affiliative style falls in the constructive styles category. In general, this category measures our level of satisfaction, our ability to establish healthy relationships and work effectively with people, and proficiency at accomplishing tasks. This style places high importance on family, friendship and business relationships. In my personal life it explains my dislike and avoidance of arguments and disagreements. I have been married 27 years, and yes I know it takes two to make it work but my high value of marriage makes me work harder at it. This style has shined a light on why people usually confine and trust me with their feelings. It takes me time to make a decision because I consider how other people are going to feel and be......

...The Life Style Inventory (LSI ) exercise had helped me become more aware of the thought patterns and life principles that I value as a person and in my relationship with others . Who we are as persons greatly influence and affect how effective and efficient we can be as leaders and managers thus it is important to venture into an awareness activity that would bring us closer to who really are or to possibly refute and analyze what we learn and what we think we are . This presents my LSI results and a discussion of how the results mirror or contradict my personal belief about who I am as well as provide a course of action for the improvement of my not so effective styles Part I : Personal Thinking Styles `Primary` and `Backup` Thinking Styles The LSI result form provides a circumplex pro (Figure 1 see appendix ) which maps out the scores of my responses to the inventory and thus identifies the specific aspects of my LSI result . It is evident from Figure 1 that my highest score falls in the Affiliative style (2 'o clock position . It can be said that my primary thinking style is affiliative which means that I tend to place importance and value to my interpersonal relationships and to always make sure that I do not make enemies and everyone . In reflection , I agreed with this because I must admit that I always strive to maintain harmony in all my relationships , may it be at work or in my neighborhood and with my family .
