7s Framework

...Diagnostic Model The model I have chosen to apply to my two companies is the 7-S Framework model. I believe that this model is the best model to identify and measure the important aspects of my two organizations performances. Tom Peters and Robert Waterman developed the model in the early 1980’s. The 7-S Framework model helps to analyze the organizations position to achieve. It focuses on if they can achieve its intended objective or will it fall through. According to Mindtools.com, “The 7S model can be used in a wide variety of situations where an alignment perspective is useful, for example to help you: * Improve the performance of a company. * Examine the likely effects of future changes within a company. * Align departments and processes during a merger or acquisition. * Determine how best to implement a proposed strategy.” It is broken up into seven elements. Each element has a different meaning and purpose to help define, identify and descried what management and culture can influence. The purpose of the elements is to help aligned organizations in order for them to be successful. The elements are Strategy, Structure, Systems, Superordinate Goals, Skills, Style and Staff. Strategy is the element the will help you develop a plan that will have an advantage over the necessary change provided. It is the chosen route to competitive success. Structure is the overall design of the plan. It will present the way the organization is......

...McKinsey 7S Framework From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search [pic] [pic] Visual representation of the model The McKinsey 7S Framework is a management model developed by well-known business consultants Robert H. Waterman, Jr. and Tom Peters (who also developed the MBWA-- "Management By Walking Around" motif, and authored In Search of Excellence) in the 1980s. This was a strategic vision for groups, to include businesses, business units, and teams. The 7S are structure, strategy, systems, skills, style, staff and shared values. The model is most often used as a tool to assess and monitor changes in the internal situation of an organization. The model is based on the theory that, for an organization to perform well, these seven elements need to be aligned and mutually reinforcing. So, the model can be used to help identify what needs to be realigned to improve performance, or to maintain alignment (and performance) during other types of change. Whatever the type of change – restructuring, new processes, organizational merger, new systems, change of leadership, and so on – the model can be used to understand how the organizational elements are interrelated, and so ensure that the wider impact of changes made in one area is taken into consideration. OBJECTIVE OF THE MODEL (To analyze how well an organization is positioned to achieve its intended objective) Usage • Improve the performance of a company • Examine the likely effects of......

The Walt Disney Company: Mckinsey 7s Model the Entertainment King

...boy from Missouri, farmer Walter Elias Disney set out to make a mark on society. After first joining the Red Cross in World War I, he came back determined to be an artist. After moving to Hollywood in 1923 with his older brother Roy, they founded Disney Brothers Studio. After diversifying as much as possible, Disney had a firm grasp on the global market share until the 1980’s where the company’s revenues began to slump in the film industry. Luckily Sid Bass invested $365 million in order to rescue the company and bring an end to all hostile takeover attempts. Disney’s billion dollar powerhouse status in the entertainment industry can be broken down and analyzed using the McKinsey’s 7S model. This model can be applied to Disney to analyze the company’s management and strategic policies. The McKinsey 7S model covers important strategic areas of operation including, strategy, structure, systems, style, skills, staff, and shared values. These seven elements need to be aligned and mutually reinforcing so that the model can be used to help identify what needs to be realigned in order to improve performance or to maintain alignment and performance. Disney Corporation has a hugely diversified strategy, that is to say, the plan devised to maintain and build competitive advantage over the competition. In 1928, after creating and losing the Oswald franchise to his distributor, Walt used a technique new to the animated television industry, synchronized sound with a cartoon. With his......

Apple 7s Model

...Apple - 7-s Model Super ordinate goals(soft) "To make a contribution to the world by making tools for the mind that advance humankind." Strategy (hard) Apple’s fundamental business model has not changed since it first began business in the late 1980’s. The main focus of the Apple strategy is in constant innovation. Apple is engaged in horizontal integration, vertical integration, strategies outsourcing and diversification. Structure(hard) The company's management employs a functional structure as the company is organised along functional lines. This structure groups people on the basis of their common expertise-experience and resources. This structure gives managers greater control of organisational activities and enables the company to avoid becoming too tall by creating several different hierarchies. By decentralising authority and responsibility as well as through a relatively flat hierarchical structure, Apple encourages its lower-level managers and employees to take the initiative and foster the company's strengths such as Apple's innovation, engineering excellence and marketing skills. Systems(hard) In order to avoid coordination problems between people, functions and divisions Apple has to use integration mechanisms and control systems. Actually, integration mechanisms aim at increasing intra-functional coordination and communication. As Apple's culture can be described as relatively open and casual, direct contact constitutes and appropriate......

...Apple 7S Model try to explore the McKinsey 7S Framework as a part of case study, in which I have to analyze Telenor, the Norwegian telecommunication company. McKinsey and Company created this 7S framework in the early 1980s. It is well-known for analyzing organizations, for the factthat McKinsey and Company used it to analyze over 70 large organizations in 1980s. As described in the title, the framework has 7 variables: structure, strategy, systems, staff, skills, styleand shared value. These variables are categorized as soft and hard components. The hard componentsare strategy, structure and systems which are normally feasible and easy to identify in an organisationas they are normally well documented in reports such as strategy statements, corporate plans, organisational charts, etc . The remaining four ones are more difficult to comprehend. It is only possible to understand these aspects by studying the organisation very closely, normally throughobservations and/or through conducting interview (~Oh no …). Structure Structure is the skeleton, the form of shape, of organisations. It dictates the way it operates andperforms (Waterman et al., 1980). Traditionally, businesses are structured with divisions, departments and layers, in which the lower layers answer to upper layers. Today, the flat structure, where the work is done in teams of specialists, are more common. The idea is to make theorganisation more flexible and devolve the power by empowering the......

...understand how the organizational elements are interrelated, and so ensure that the wider impact of changes made in one area is taken into consideration. You can use the 7S model to help analyze the current situation (Point A), a proposed future situation (Point B) and to identify gaps and inconsistencies between them. It's then a question of adjusting and tuning the elements of the 7S model to ensure that your organization works effectively and well once you reach the desired endpoint. Sounds simple? Well, of course not: Changing your organization probably will not be simple at all! Whole books and methodologies are dedicated to analyzing organizational strategy, improving performance and managing change. The 7S model is a good framework to help you ask the right questions – but it won't give you all the answers. For that you'll need to bring together the right knowledge, skills and experience. When it comes to asking the right questions, we've developed a Mind Tools checklist and a matrix to keep track of how the seven elements align with each other. Supplement these with your own questions, based on your organization's specific circumstances and accumulated wisdom. 7S Checklist Questions Here are some of the questions that you'll need to explore to help you understand your situation in terms of the 7S framework. Use them to analyze your current (Point A) situation first, and then repeat the exercise for your proposed situation (Point B). Strategy: * What is......

Its practices of confidentiality, influence on business practices, and corporate culture have experienced a polarizing reception. McKinsey was founded in 1926 by James McKinsey in order to apply accounting principles to management. Mr. McKinsey died in 1937, and the firm was restructured several times, with the modern-day McKinsey & Company emerging in 1939. Marvin Bower is credited with establishing McKinsey's culture and practices in the 1930s based on the principles he experienced as a lawyer. The firm developed an "up or out" policy, where consultants who are not promoted are asked to leave. McKinsey was the first management consultancy to hire recent college graduates,......

7s Model

...Introduction- The 7S model is a strategic model that can be used for any of the following purposes: * Organizational alignment or performance improvement * Understanding the core and most influential factors in an organization’s strategy * Determining how best to realign an organization to a new strategy or other organization design * Examining the current workings and relations an organization exhibits   The model, made famous by the McKinsey consulting company, is good for a thorough discussion around an organizations activities, infrastructure, and interactions. -The model and its usage- Here is the 7S model that portrays seven elements of an organization.   I define the elements as follows: Strategy – This is the organization’s alignment of resources and capabilities to “win” in its market.
