...sex-based contracting preference programs in the U.S. cities have faced significant challenges in the courts (Rubin). On February 7th, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino announced his plan to eliminate a 15 year old program that required bidders on city construction contracts to subcontract 15% of work to minority-owned business enterprises and 5% to women-owned firms (Rubin). That program is being replaced by one that requires bidders to award 20% of subcontracts to local businesses and 20 % to firms with less than 20 employees both categories being race and gender neutral (Robin). While this Mayor announced his new plan, 3 days later on February 10th, the United States court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit went the other direction by overturning a lower court and upholding Denver’s constructions M/WBE program in a decade-long legal challenge by locally based Concrete Works of Colorado Inc. This program initially earmarked 16% of city construction contracts to MBE’s and 12% to WBEs (Robin). In this essay I will tell you my views on the two cities and their programs. Is minority set aside programs morally acceptable, is one of the questions I will be also answering in this essay and will set out the utilitarian and deontological considerations. One of the most heated areas of affirmative actions is with jobs. I think that Mayor Thomas Menino of Boston, new plan shows that Affirmative action works (Robin). I think that was a really good decision to equal out the subcontracts for......

Chick-Fil-a Views on Gay Marriage

...Kieya Smith The strong belief of a company’s president has caused them to lose potential sites for their restaurant and a partnership. Chick-Fil-A’s president, Dan Cathy speaks for his company as a whole when he says, they are against gay marriage. Cities like Boston and Chicago have voiced that they were against the views of Chick-Fil-A on gay marriage. The letter from Boston’s Mayor Thomas Menino and Chicago’s Mayor Rahm Emaneul comment, "Chick-fil-A's values are not Chicago values", made it clear that there was no room for that type discrimination in their cities. Also the statement made by Mr. Cathy has caused the Jim Henson Co., to pull its partnership with the restaurant; they had provided the Muppet toys for the kids’ meals. The religious beliefs of this company’s owners have always played a part in the operation of this restaurant. All 1,600 restaurants are closed on Sunday’s, due to the Christian Sabbath. The company even contributed large amounts of money to groups against gay marriage in 2010. I believe that the company has a right to speak on their beliefs. Those against their beliefs also have that right to prevent the company from having sites in their cities, because those beliefs offend the people of their town. The mayors of those cities decided to stand behind their people. I understand the Jim Henson Co., position in deciding that they didn’t want any ties to the statement made by Chick-Fil-A’s president. Though the Jim Henson Co., should have...

Pobres Malalas

...action as early as 5:00 am on Tuesday morning. This action allowed city officials to promptly respond by using police cars for student transportation and allowing those with valid student ID cards to ride public transit and subways for free. If not for the action by the city, attendance for this day could have been down substantially from what it was; the school department said students had an 82% attendance rate Tuesday, about 10% lower than a normal day. The union acted responsibly and promptly asked the nearly 700 striking drivers to return to work including visits with megaphones to every city bus yard on Tuesday . The fact that the union did not condone the striker’s action is encouraging to all parties involved. The Mayor Tom Menino condemned the strike and indicated he would take every possible legal action to force drivers back to work. Although this is within the rights to pursue this route, working with the union to ensure its members follow the collective agreement in place may have been a wiser first step considering the union was not supporting this labour interruption. Veolia attempted legal action to legislate the drivers back to work but that action was denied by Federal District Court Judge George O’Toole and as a result Veolia has agreed to meet with the Union to review their demands including the use of electronic tracking GPS devices on the buses, changes to health care plans, failing to provide key route information and ineffective communications......

Security Planning for the 2004 Democratic National Convention Case Report

...beaten out other larger cities which included New York, Miami and Detroit to win the convention. The convention would nominate local politician John Kerry to run against President George W. Bush in the upcoming 2004 election. It was hoped that the event would bring an economic windfall to the city and also showcase the historical and fashionable attractions to the national and international media. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino had worked hard to bring the Democratic National Convention to Boston. The city had tried in 2000 to host the convention but lost out to Los Angeles. On its second try with the help of Senator Edward Kennedy and the state’s congressional delegation Boston was successful. Mayor Menino was very excited for Boston to be in the media spotlight for the four days in July that the convention would be held. It would give the city a chance to bask in the limelight and show its rich historical past and its vibrant present. The Mayor also added that he saw the convention as a challenge for Boston. We’d never had an event of this magnitude. Menino was confident the city would meet the challenge and fare better than others that had hosted political conventions in the past. The city’s elation would soon be calmed by the reality of hosting the first major political event in the post 9/11 era. National political conventions always drew protesters whose aim was to disrupt the proceeding. Now add to that the possibility of a terrorist group keen on......

Ola, Adeus, Ola

Niketown at Oxford Circus, London Nike 6.0 As part of the 6.0 campaign, Nike introduced a new line of T-shirts that include phrases such as "Dope", "Get High" and "Ride Pipe" – sports lingo that is also adouble entendre for drug use. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino expressed his objection to the shirts after seeing them in a window display at the city's Niketownand asked the store to remove the display. "What we don't need is a major corporation like Nike, which tries to appeal to the younger generation, out there giving credence to the drug issue," Menino told The Boston Herald. A company official stated the shirts were meant to pay homage to extreme sports, and that Nike does not condone the illegal use of drugs.[69] Nike was forced to replace the shirt line.[70] NBA uniform and apparel deal In June 2015, Nike signed an 8-year deal with the NBA to become the official apparel supplier for the league, beginning with the 2017–18 season. Lasheena Davis- Review of the Literature

...preschool program for 4-year-olds also has an increase, with 2,518 applications filed during the first registration cycle, compared with 2,070 during the same period last year. That has left 745 4-year-olds without assignments, an increase of 513 from last year. The city is not obligated under state law to make a seat available for all preschool students who apply, as it is with kindergarten. The School Department, at the urging of Mayor Thomas M. Menino, is in the midst of exploring a complete redesign of the city's more-than-two-decade-old system of assigning students. The mayor wants students to attend schools closer to home to save millions on busing, and the School Department has been holding community meetings to gather their ideas. The goal is for the School Committee to vote on adopting a new system by the end of this year. But attempts to change the school lottery system for more than a decade have failed because of concern that too many of the lowest-performing schools are in the poorest and most racially diverse neighborhoods. Menino and Johnson are hoping this time will be different because they launched a concerted effort to turn around many of the schools in those neighborhoods and some are showing increases in test scores and student attendance. But the possible changes are doing little to ease the anxiety of those parents who did not prevail in this year's lottery. Margaret Day's 4-year-old son is near the bottom of waiting lists at three schools for......
