1. One consulting firm has predicted that video and web conferencing will make business travel extinct. Do you agree? Why or why not?
A videoconference allows individuals at two or more locations to communicate simultaneously through two-way video and audio transmissions, and web conferencing refers to a service that allows conferencing events to be shared with remote locations. I do agree that these two tools will lead to the extinction of business travels. My reason for agreeing with this is because of the economic benefits that are made possible by this technology. One of the best things a firm can achieve is to reduce cost, and video conferencing definitely does this since it allows them to avoid costs associated with business travels. Another reason for my agreement is the fact that videoconferencing is now growing at an annual rate of 30%, thus if it continues to grow like this then it will soon take over. 2. What is the distinction between videoconferencing and telepresence?
Videoconferencing is an online tool that allows individuals at two or more locations to communicate simultaneously through two-way and audio transmissions. Telepresence is a leading-edge-high-end videoconferencing system which integrates the audio and visual environment allowing a person to give the appearance of being present at a location other than his or her true physical location. Therefore, on like videoconferencing which merely allows you to communicate, telepresence make users feel as if they are actually present in a location different from their own. 3. What are the ways in which videoconferencing provides value to a business? Would you consider it smart management? Explain your answer. i. It provides value in inbound logistics when two suppliers communicate through it and exchange data through this excellent video conference, that makes it works correctly and provides valuable information to both of them and that helps them to provide servicing and improving their products. It helps the administrative finance infrastructure to reduce the travel expenses and use the video conference instead of traveling. In human resources management, employees can be hired using video conference to make interviews. In operation, videoconference helps different organizations from different locations to communicate with each other as well as helping in functioning and operating the work without travelling. In outbound logistic, the information will be delivered to the employees in different locations. In sales and marketing, the videoconference helps to communicate with customers on products, prices and sales, as well as giving trainings to employees on the latest product information, the techniques of sales and competitors. Finally, in servicing, it helps to repair the equipment with maintenance. If a company has a problem with a machine, they can use videoconference to communicate the problem to a remote expert which will help to solve it easily. ii. I would consider videoconferencing to be “smart” management. Smart management is a criterion that guides the setting of objectives. The letters broadly conform to the words specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound. Videoconferencing is specific since it will only be used in replacement of business travels; it is measurable; it is attainable since there are now lower quality videoconferencing tools for businesses who can’t afford the highly defined ones; it is relevant since it reduce costs to travel; and it is time-bound because it saves the time that you would travel from Jamaica to England just for a business travel. Therefore having met these criteria I would consider videoconferencing smart management. 4. If you were in charge of a small business, would you choose to implement videoconferencing? What factors would you consider in your decision?
If in charge of a small business currently in Jamaica I would not choose to implement videoconferencing. In making this decision I would have considered that being a small business in Jamaica I would not need to make business travels. Thus implementing videoconferencing would not be operationally, tactically, nor strategically a wise decision.…...
