MS-13 History and Origins

The Mara Salvatrucha gang originated in Los Angeles, in the 1980s by Salvadoran immigrants in the neighborhood between Pico and Wilshire also know as the city's Pico-Union neighborhood. They immigrated to the United States Due to a 12-year civil war in El Salvador, which resulted in over 100,000 deaths and over a million refugees( The Salvadorian refugees and immigrants predominantly settled in southern California and Washington, D.C. Some of the refugees and immigrants had ties with La Mara, a violent street gang from El Salvador. Others had been members the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMNL) during the El Salvadorian civil war(Rimmer, 2009). FMNL was made up of Salvadorian peasants who were trained as guerilla fighters. Many were adept at using guerilla tactics and working with explosives, firearms, and booby traps.
Salvadorians were not accepted into the Los Angeles Hispanic community, and were frequently targeted by local Hispanic and African American gangs notably the 18th street gang. Due to this suffering, in the late 1980s, some refugee members of La Mara and FMNL formed what is now known as the Mara Salvatrucha (MS) street gang. Like many other street gangs, MS initially formed for protection, but quickly developed a reputation for being organized and extremely violent criminal enterprise.
The gang’s rivals took note. One, known as the Mexican Mafia, or “la eme” for short, and is one of the most storied of California’s gangs, decided to integrate the MS into their regional Latino gang alliance. Called the “Surenos,” the alliance included many prominent gangs and stretched into much of the southwest of the United States and Mexico. It afforded the MS more protection in the barrios and in prison. In return, the MS provided hit men and added the number 13, the position M occupies…...

...and maintained by defining the date the project begins. This includes any planning or initiation activities. By setting the start date, we can better estimate how long a project will take. Set the task type to “Fixed duration” to facilitate project schedule development and consistency. Understanding task types is very important. MS Project defines three task types. The task type determines how MS Project calculates duration, work, or hours and resource unit assignments. Setting the wrong task type will cause MS Project to recalculate schedules incorrectly. Next, uncheck the new tasks or effort-driven checkbox. When you’re just starting a project, you should always uncheck this box. It helps to facilitate planning and the initial work. Now, uncheck the split in progress tasks checkbox. Normally, task progress will either be zero or complete with no other value. It is very important to uncheck this box. Next, uncheck the box next to “Tasks will always honor their constraint dates.” Sometimes, a task is started earlier or later than originally planned. By clearing this option, tasks that are started earlier will be moved by MS Project to the earlier start date. Finally, select the “Set as default” button for the changes to take effect for all projects. Next, I’m going to select the calculation tab and make sure that the checkbox next to updating task status updates resource status has been checked. If it is not, be sure to select it. Again, select......

...Johnesha Reed Sociology TR 6:30-9:20 Reflection #1 February 11, 2013 Reflection#1 Socialization is in which people learn the attitudes, values, and behaviors appropriate for members of a particular culture. The Role of Socialization The question was asked “What makes us who we are”? First of all many questions came to mind with that question. For example, are we genetically bad? Or is it our upbringing? Maybe a bit of both, maybe some people are naturally bad but their upbringing can influence this further. Our genes give us potentials for example; two addicts will give birth to a potential addict. Our upbringings give us our values. Two thieves will probably raise another thief. Sometimes people want to make a change though, I strongly disagree with two thieves raising another thief, and because many people throughout history have risen out of the gutter they were born in, and even dedicated their lives to help others in the same situations. We certainly inherit traits from our parents, don’t get me wrong, but we have the possibility to choose the right way over the wrong as far as it is in our power. There is no such thing as people who are born badly. The monsters we hear about like serial killers, rapists, etc. are usually people with mental illnesses, or psychopaths. Have you ever thought about the fact that some highly respected people in our society are the biggest criminals of all? Agents of socialization Family is the most important agent of......

...Objectives - MS Project 2010 * Creating a summary task * Working with subtasks * Establishing task dependencies * Specify lead and lag times A project task list can be as few as 10 or as many as several hundred tasks. With a large project, it can become difficult to locate a specific task. Using MS Project, you can organize the task list by creating a hierarchical structure. This process of structuring a task list is known as outlining. Outlining is used to organize common tasks into groups within the task list. The groups can represent phases of the project. In this lab, we will first use outlining to group the tasks of our project into phases. We will create a main summary task to represent the entire project and then several levels of summary tasks below the main summary task to represent the phases of the project. Creating an Outline 1. Log onto Windows. Open MS Project. 2. Open your project file that you created in Lesson 1, Part A (MyLab1a_XXX.mpp, where XXX are your initials.) 3. Save this file, using Save As, as MyLab1b_XXX.mpp, where XXX are your initials. Creating a hierarchical outline organizes the project tasks list into groups of tasks. Each group of tasks is preceded by a summary task, which describes the tasks within each group. The outline of a project generally begins with a main summary task. The main summary task is a brief description of the project and all tasks are subordinate to the main......

...Gang Activity and Drug Operation History of Gangs Jaime J. Sopena Richard Solita There is a major misconception in America that gangs originated here in the United States. First we must define; what is a gang? Merriam-Webster defines is as these three variations; a group of criminals; group of young people who do illegal things together and who often fight against other gangs; a group of people who are friends and who do things together. Though it is a general definition I am willing to argue that it may be more than that. In America today we see gangs as territorial, with this being said it can be dated all the way back since Homer’s The Iliad with the Achaeans and their adversaries. But what this paper will focus on the history of gangs in America. Street gangs have become predominantly larger through the previous centuries. Through the birth of this country “gangs” were made up of orphans who mustered together considering themselves like family to be stronger in as a tallied numbered force (Delaney 2006). There is evidence of “gangs” existing early America since the Revolutionary war, and since then researchers have recorded at least 500 gangs between 1760 and 1900(Gurr 1989). While this recorded research is accurate modern rendition of “gangs” became famous with such gangs like Forty Thieves and Dead Rabbits (Delaney 2006). Before there was any law enforcement in early America citizens in New York were pleased with the level of public safety and were not......

...challenge and formed a new gang by name Mara Salvatrucha, popularly known as MS-13. “Las-Mara” is a notorious street gang that engages in violent crimes in El Salvador. Salvatruchas, refers to the members of the political entity, styled Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front. This is a group of Peasants from Salvador, trained in guerilla warfare. The number 13 refers to the California prison gang, the Mexican Mafia. A youth facing the unemployment problem, not getting support from the government and the society, when he is constantly nagged, abused, condemned and ostracized by the society, turns into a viler and bitter individual. With no authority to show heartfelt care and concern, and an understanding approach to the problems of teeming millions of refugees, the frustrated immigrant youth formed a new gang and began to engage in violent criminal acts. The founding members of the gang were guerilla warfare experts. The training and sophistication they provided to the new recruits was more advanced as compared to their rivals. The new gang topped the list of gangs that have been engaging in violent criminal activities of all sorts. The initiation procedures into the gang are as violent and inhuman, as the activities of the gang are! They become part of the gang by being “jumped in.” “In one Washington DC event, witnessed by a reporter, the inductee was an 11-year old boy - he sought membership in MS-13 so they would protect him from bullies in his neighborhood. ......

...Identifying Resources available for Children with Multiple Sclerosis and their Families Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable disorder of the central nervous system. Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease in which the body, through its immune system, launches a defensive attack against its own tissues and can range from relatively benign to somewhat disabling to devastating as contact between the brain and other parts of the body is disrupted. MS affects the ability of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord to communicate with each other effectively. The initial symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis are often blurred or double vision, poor contrast, eye pain, red-green color distortion, or even blindness in one eye. Most people with MS experience muscle weakness in their extremities and difficulty with coordination and balance. These symptoms may be severe enough to impair walking or standing. The worst cases of MS can produce partial or complete paralysis. Most people with MS also show par aesthesis, transitory abnormal sensory feelings such as numbness, prickling, or “pins and needles” sensations. Some people may also experience tremors, pain, dizziness, hearing loss and speech impediments. Many people with MS experience cognitive impairments such as difficulties with concentration, attention, memory, and poor judgment but such symptoms are usually mild and are frequently overlooked. Depression and anxiety is another common feature of multiple sclerosis. ......

...Sclerosis. Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that affects the Central Nervous System. There are multiple ways to treat the symptoms of MS but none more important than diet. Paying close attention to one’s diet plays a major role in improving living with MS. When I was diagnosed with MS making changes to my diet made noticeable improvements in daily functions.               Multiple Sclerosis(MS) is a disease that attacks the Central Nervous System(brain and spinal cord). The cause of MS is unknown but it is believed that environmental factors along with being genetically predisposed may trigger the disease. MS impedes signals to and from the brain which affects many bodily functions. MS is known as a immune- mediated disease, meaning that it is part of a group of diseases that don't have a “trigger” but go through inflammatory passages and lead to inflammation. More specifically MS causes the immune system to attack the myelin sheath around the nerves and the nerves themselves. The bodies T- cells, white blood cell that plays a central role in searching out and destroying objects marked as harmful to the body, carry out the destruction of the myelin sheath. Myelin is a protective fatty coating around the nerves in the Central Nervous System. Once the myelin sheath or nerve is damaged the disrupted signals lead to symptoms. There are various symptoms for MS which include any of the following: Fatigue, numbness/ tingling, weakness, vertigo, sexual dysfunction, pain,......

Ms and Pregnancy

...MS and pregnancy The diagnosis of MS should not prevent you from becoming a parent but for this purpose it is very important to consult your doctor and your family. MS affects people who have or are planning to start a family, but more often women than men. This raises many questions about causal relationship between MS and pregnancy. Although, many years ago, women with multiple sclerosis are advised to avoid pregnancy that their condition would not worsened, but today we access different insights. Studies conducted over the past few decades have shown that the symptoms of multiple sclerosis can be alleviated or even disappear during pregnancy. The analysis of works that report about 13 144 women with MS revealed the following data: * MS has no effect on pregnancy. * No increase in negative symptoms nor for mother nor for the child. * Woman with MS can expect a normal pregnancy and normal delivery. For all these reasons, women with MS, especially those with mild neurological deficits, should be encouraged to become pregnant as soon as possible due to the progressive flow of the disease. It is important to break down some of the prejudices that exist and women provide the necessary information: 1. Does MS affect on the fertility of women? 2. Does MS affect on pregnancy and the baby's health? 3. Is it possible to apply spinal or epidural anesthesia during childbirth? 4. Is it recommended breastfeeding and is it safe? 5. Does......

...MS Project Familiarization Ida Casey Dr. Kimberly Malone-Haddox BUS 375: Project Management October 18th, 2015 At first, I thought the MS Project is very difficult from a user standpoint. I felt that using the MS Project is very time consuming. As I was trying to navigate them the system, I found that I was focusing more on the actual system them inputting information. Considering that I do have a lot of experience with man of the MS office programs, I thought this program would be similar to that. I feel that if I had more tutorials where I am taught then have a quiz or even a step-by-step guide then I would feel more comfortable using it. Overall, it is a great program, but it still think that I would be able to use MS Excel to perform these tasks in MS Excel instead of MS Project. I do feel that with a little more that MS Projects is very easy and simple to use. You just have to get used to the program and take your time. I’m actually very excited about using the program now because this would help me gain some experience on implementing practice and assessments so I would be more confidence using it. But after doing a little research, I did find its purpose and why it was created for the business professional world. Two challenges that I foresee using MS Project in this course would be doing the projects accurate and actually navigating through it. When it comes to navigating through the program, it is difficult due to the extra steps when in the other MS office......

...The general economic decline for most Mississippi blacks since the 1960s has been accompanied by the resurrection of white racist terrorism and political violence. The tortured body of one unidentified black man was found floating down the river in Cleveland, MS. The man’s sex organs had been hacked off and the coroner later reported finding his penis in his stomach. On January 11, 1981, the body of 45-year-old Lloyd Douglas Gray was found hanging from a tree in Tallahatchie County, MS. The coroner pronounced Gray’s death as a suicide, and no autopsy was performed. A month later, the body of 32 year old Roy Washington was found in Cypress Creek, in Holmes County, MS. Washington was badly beaten in the head and face. His hands were bounded behind him and then he was shot in the head at point-blank range. The corpse was weighed down with a car jack and wrapped by barbed wire. Scars around his neck indicated that he had also been lynched. Local white newspapers were quiet about the murder. Holmes County police did not aggressively pursue leads in the case and even followed a black reporter around while he conducted his own investigation. The majority of the other black men who were found beaten or hanging in MS have also been officially labeled suicides. Familiar with the pattern of racial violence, one black resident of Tallahatchie County declares, “If they say it was suicide, it was probably a lynching.”[2] The Case of Eddie Carthan Eddie Carthan......
