China is a land that contains an overpopulation crisis. With a current estimated 1.4billion people living in China, something needed to be done in order to lower the birth rates and control the fast growing population. The solution the Chinese government came up with was the one child policy. They set up a number penalties and benefits in order to encourage the Chinese people to cooperate with this policy. The predicted outcome was to reduce the birth rates and reduce their population, which was ultimately affecting the Chinese economy. However, the one child policy created an unexpected crisis of its own, the creation of unequal demographics of gender and the start of a new cultural and economic trend. This paper is going to study the demographic changes between males and females as well as the cultural impact it has had in present day China due to the enactment of the one child policy in 1979.

The reason to why China came into the population crisis was that people in China chose to have such large families because of the high mortality rates of their kids; they would not even live past the age of five. Families perceived that out of those ten kids only half of them would live, opted to have as many as they could to ensure that at least some of their kids would survive. As time passed people still held these beliefs, however medical innovations and better health care helped elongate the lives of those kids, consequently those families that decided to have many kids in order to ensure the lives of a few kids were now realizing that all their kids were living and they were left raising all six to ten kids. This is how the population in China became an excess and ultimately started to affect the country. In the beginning, the whole policy was voluntary where the families chose to use birth control and where educated on the different methods of preventing…...

...the Bible, David was a young man who, using only a slingshot and five rocks struck down the giant Goliath and saved his people. David has been a symbolic figure in art throughout history. Two men who lived nearly a hundred years apart both sculptured the famous biblical figure of David through the lens of his own times but they were both influenced by many of the same things. Michelangelo showed David as a symbol of courage in the face of the enemy while Donatello depicted David as a symbol what can be accomplished by even the smallest entity. His character and story have been interpreted and re-interpreted by many artists in different mediums. Donatello was was born in Florence in 1386. He was an early Renaissance artist who lived at the end of the Dark Ages. He is known as the artist whose work officially began the Italian Renaissance (“David”). Donatello was first introduced to Roman sculpture when he visited Rome with his master, Brunelleschi (“Donatello”). It was there that he carefully studied classical Roman sculptures. The studies he preformed in Rome greatly influenced him the rest of his life. He is known for making the first sculptures with classical influence after the Dark Ages. The influence of his Roman studies is shown in the natural flow of the statue, something which is not seen in any art of the Dark Ages. Michelangelo was born to a middle class banking family on March 6, 1475 in Caprese, Italy. When he was still a young man, his mother become......

A Man

...A shirtless young man stares out past the camera as if he is looking at the logo above his head. He needlessly clings to the rock to further accentuate his impressive body structure. The logo above his head reads “DOLCE & GABBANA” in a bold semi-transparent font. A small bottle of something is juxtaposed to his left. It is the item they are trying to sell, a sports cologne. This advertisement is very effective because of the use of ethos and pathos. Although those two parts are heavily used in this ad, logos is not present as much. Even with that being said many people are going to buy this particular cologne based on ethos and pathos. This is true because Dolce and Gabbana is a very well-known company, which plays a huge part in ethos with credibility and authority. Pathos is also used heavily with people wanting to look like that or women wanting their men to look like that; this makes the reader believe that if they wear this cologne women will be more attracted to them, and that they, too, can look as good as the model in the ad. This advertisement was featured in Muscle & Fitness magazine. This particular magazine is aimed towards classy young to middle-aged men who are professionals. This can be seen through the contents in the magazine. The magazine has lots of ads that are of watches, cologne, and nice cars. With that being said we do not believe that this magazine is geared toward younger teenage men because of what ads, pictures and articles in the......

Existentialist me leans against my door, eyebrows raised. Stressed me, Independent me, and Artistic me are also present.) Stressed: So, come on, what’s this meeting about? Logical: (Taking a deep breath) Well, it’s time we come together. It’s time we create “Jeremy.” Lighthearted: (Furrowing his brow, but smiling) What? Is this “Captain Planet,” where all the characters join fists and out bursts the superhero? Logical: No, this meeting is an opportunity to evaluate where we are in life, like a State of the Union Address. Existentialist: Speaking of which, I’ve been meaning to ask all of you: college? Honestly, is it worth it? You . . . (gestures toward Logical) you’re writing that philosophy book, which should do well. And look at Artsy over there! He’s composing music, making beautiful art; why don’t we see where we can get with that? Not to mention the endless possibilities if Lighthearted aims for Saturday Night Live. Think about the number of successful people in this world who didn’t go to college! (Logical shakes his head) I mean, let’s be realistic: if we go to college, eventually we’ll be required to declare a major. Once we earn a degree, it might be harder to pursue our true passions—comedy, music, art . . . Logical: Not true. First of all, you failed to mention my fascinations with......

A Man Is a Man

...A Short Essay A Man is a Man, A Woman is a Woman Tabitha Ponder Ashford University ENG 125 Introduction to Literature Professor Carla McGill February 4, 2013 A Man is a Man, A Woman is A Woman Some may say that a man is a man and a woman is a woman; and they should stay in there prospective places at all costs. Gender roles can sometimes be reversed. Specifically, I am going to address the gender reversal in marriage. Several factors may contribute to role (gender) reversal. It depends on the personality of the individuals involved, and how they learn to interact with one another (or not). Also, a change in circumstances or a chain of events can force a gender role reversal. For example, the husband may get hurt on the job and now the wife who is accustomed to staying home with the kids now is forced to go out and provide for the family. Let’s define gender roles within a traditional marriage between a man and a woman. Traditionally, the husband is the one who provides for the family financially. He is the bread winner. Because he is the bread winner, normally he is the final voice of authority in the home concerning any issues that may arise. The wife is the one who is the caregiver. The wife is the nurturer; she takes care of the children and the husband too! She is also takes care of the affairs of the home. The depth of most people’s belief in gender-role stereotypes is often overlooked. A husband may have the......

Just One Man: Silence and Defiance in Coetzee's Waiting for the Barbarians

...Just One Man: Silence and Defiance In J.M. Coetzee’s Waiting for the Barbarians This past summer, I had occasion to find myself in a number of airport terminals in various cities around the world. The scenes and memories of each mostly blend together in a mill of nondescript faces, foreign tongues, and ambling bodies. Much of the time I spent waiting, clutching a coach ticket, could be likened to an animated state of sleep. I was there to function, to shuffle into line and put my body in a seat and nothing more. I was awoken from this once in the international terminal in Milan, and it was a rather rude awakening. While sitting in one of the seemingly endless rows of black, plastic seats, I found myself six paces from a family speaking a language that I didn’t know and couldn’t identify; Eastern Europeans, perhaps. There was a small baby in the mother’s arms and the young boy, probably about the age of three or four years, was being wrangled back at the wrist by his father. For whatever reason, the boy was not happy: he screamed, he cried, he pulled his weight against his oppressor. For me, a child throwing a tantrum in an airport had become a very typical sight. And this one was no different, right up to the moment the father drew back and slapped the child hard across the face. I jerked in my seat, as if the slap had reached a further six feet and knocked me back as well. The boy became silent. I stayed silent. I was stunned and offended and angry…and......

...as they expressed their two most relevant specific reactions man, crying and laughing. Moreover, much later, Francois Rabelais would say that "laughter is proper to man." Aristophanes comedy is considered as the ancient Father, creator of satirical and political texts and puffs: "Wasps", "locks", "birds". In ancient times, the comedy was defined in contrast with tragedy, being conceived as "rude imitation of men, but not an imitation of totality aspects offered by a lower nature, but those who make ridiculous part of ugliness. Ridicule can be defined as a blemish and ugliness of some sort, which is without pain or injury, as comedian mask is ugly and knead, but not to suffer. "(Aristotle). Depending on these "imitations" comedy can be: comedy of character , comedy of manners and comedy of situation (example: One Man Two Guvnors). However, some people would argue that modern comedies lack that little bit of seriousness, which is specific to the dramatic genre. In order to agree with or decline this affirmation, I am going to review a highly popular play: "One Man, Two Guvnors" by Richard Bean. The play is actually an adaptation of the Italian act "Il servitore di due padroni" (Servant of Two Masters), a comedy which was released to the public in 1743. "One Man, Two Guvnors" got to see light of the day in 1963, as of 2011 being also available in e-book format as well as played at local UK Theaters. The "One Man, Two Guvnors" play has Francis H. in the main role. In......

... learned arguments, observations of daily life, recollections, and reflections of the author. Almost all modern essays are written in prose, but works in verse have been dubbed essays (e.g. Alexander Pope's An Essay on Criticism and An Essay on Man). While brevity usually defines an essay, voluminous works like John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Thomas Malthus's An Essay on the Principle of Population are counterexamples. In some countries (e.g., the United States and Canada), essays have become a major part of formal education. Secondary students are taught structured essay formats to improve their writing skills, and admission essays are often used by universities in selecting applicants and, in the humanities and social sciences, as a way of assessing the performance of students during final exams. The concept of an "essay" has been extended to other mediums beyond writing. A film essay is a movie that often incorporates documentary film making styles and which focuses more on the evolution of a theme or an idea. A photographic essay is an attempt to cover a topic with a linked series of photographs; it may or may not have an accompanying text or captions. An essay has been defined in a variety of ways. One definition is a "prose composition with a focused subject of discussion" or a "long, systematic discourse".[1] It is difficult to define the genre into which essays fall. Aldous Huxley, a leading essayist, gives guidance on the subject.[2] He......

1. Is the Mystery Man with Twenty-One Faces a Great Criminal? Why or Why Not

...1. Is the Mystery Man with Twenty-One faces a great criminal? Why or why not? Great criminals are those who threaten the laws of a sovereign. Laws only serve as vulnerable limitations, to which criminals seek to surpass. German Philosopher Walter Benjamin suggests that the law breaking tendencies of criminals create admiration and envy amongst the public. In the case of the mystery man with twenty faces, the popularity their crimes garnered from the media and subsequent praise from the public suggests the group to be great criminals. This admiration from the public suggests a social acceptance and vicarious envy to the criminal that succeeded in breaking the crime, and for the most part got away with it. Through the lens of Walter Benjamin and Marilyn Ivy, one can further denote whether the mystery man with twenty-one faces was really a great criminal. The mystery man with twenty faces was an alias for a group of individuals who wrote blackmail letters and threats to chaebols. The anonymity they were able to keep and the fear they were able to instill amongst their victims further exemplify them to be great criminals. Marylin Ivy posits that the group “showed a remarkable savvy about the powers of the media and they demonstrated this savvy tactics that both prefigured and crosscut the dominance of electronic mediation” (Ivy 16). Their ability to stay operational and undetected strengthens their “power” as criminals and allows for a story that the public would rather not...

...lesser emissions provided a desired path for the lightning to travel down. A lot of research was put in to find the ideal tip shape for lightning rods, and it was determined that the increased surface area directly correlates to how strong the electric field is at the tip of the lightning air terminal (LAT). Introduction: It is a beautiful and deadly natural occurrences. With a shock of several million volts per strike, and the capability to reach temperatures between fifteen-thousand and sixty-thousand degrees, lighting is one of the most powerful forces known to man. With all of that power lightning can cause a lot of damage. In North America lightning damage to equipment results in losses exceeding twenty-six billion dollars annually. Lightning strikes the ground around 8.6 million times a day making it nearly impossible to avoid, no matter where you live. A great deal of effort is put into protecting people and property from lighting strikes. One of the simplest and best known devices developed for lightning protection is the lightning rod. A lightning rod is a small metal rod that is normally attached to a high elevated structure. The rod is then connected to a wire that runs down the side of the building into a conductive grid. It is a common misconception that lightning rods attract lightning. The real purpose of these devices is to provide a low-resistance path to ground that can be used to conduct the enormous electrical currents when lightning strikes occur.......

...Moose and the Sparrow Hugh Garner From the very beginning Moose Maddon picked on him. The kid was bait for all of Maddon's cruel practical jokes around the camp. He was sent back to the tool-house for left-handed saws, and down to the office to ask the pay cheater if the day's mail was in, though the rest of us knew it was only flown out every week. The kid's name was Cecil, and Maddon used to mouth it with a simpering mockery, as if it pointed to the kid being something less than a man. I must admit though that the name fitted him, for Cecil was the least likely lumberjack I've seen in over twenty-five years in lumber camps. Though we knew he was intelligent enough, and a man too, if smaller than most of us, we all kidded him, in the good natured way a bunkhouse gang will. Maddon however always lisped the kid's name as if it belonged to a woman. Moose Maddon was as different from Cecil as it is possible for two human beings to be and still stay within the species. He was a big moose of a man, even for a lumber stiff, with a round flat unshaven face that looked down angrily and dourly at the world. Cecil on the other hand was hardly taller than an axe-handle, and almost as thin. He was about nineteen years old, with the looks of an inquisitive sparrow behind his thick horn-rimmed glasses. He had been sent out to the camp for the summer months by an distant relative who had a connection with the head office down in Vancouver. That summer we were cutting big stuff in......

...unhappy, God's unjust; If man alone engross not Heav'n's high care, Alone made perfect here, immortal there: Snatch from his hand the balance and the rod, Rejudge his justice, be the God of God. In pride, in reas'ning pride, our error lies; All quit their sphere, and rush into the skies. Pride still is aiming at the blest abodes, Men would be angels, angels would be gods. Aspiring to be gods, if angels fell, Aspiring to be angels, men rebel: And who but wishes to invert the laws Of order, sins against th' Eternal Cause. V. Ask for what end the heav'nly bodies shine, Earth for whose use? Pride answers, " 'Tis for mine: For me kind Nature wakes her genial pow'r, Suckles each herb, and spreads out ev'ry flow'r; Annual for me, the grape, the rose renew, The juice nectareous, and the balmy dew; For me, the mine a thousand treasures brings; For me, health gushes from a thousand springs; Seas roll to waft me, suns to light me rise; My foot-stool earth, my canopy the skies." But errs not Nature from this gracious end, From burning suns when livid deaths descend, When earthquakes swallow, or when tempests sweep Towns to one grave, whole nations to the deep? "No, ('tis replied) the first Almighty Cause Acts not by partial, but by gen'ral laws; Th' exceptions few; some change since all began: And what created perfect?"—Why then man? If the great end be human happiness, Then Nature deviates; and can man do less? As......
