Peppercorn Dining is the diner on the campus of All-American University. The dynamics of the diner consists of fulltime workers, temporary workers, and student workers. The three partners of Square One Consulting; Roger, Lynn, and Erica, were having lunch at Peppercorn one afternoon; Erica worked at Peppercorn two years ago as a student worker. The manager of Peppercorn’s name is Drew Randall; he recognized Erica and came over to say high and chit chat with her about the “old days” when she worked at Peppercorn. During the course of their conversation, Erica asked Drew how things were currently operating; Drew replied by saying, “Staffing is a nightmare. We can’t find qualified people anywhere; recruiting and retention has become a constant challenge” (Cummings & Worley, 2008, p. 217). Of course, the other consultants were all ears and wanted to hear everything that Drew had to say. However, although Drew knew there were many symptoms of a much bigger problem, he had no idea what the “root” of the problem was. He would eventually enter into a contract with the consultants to get their unbiased, external point of view as to what the bigger problems really were at Peppercorn. The consultants would use various data collection methods involving the management, workers, and the customers to get a clearer picture as to what the actual problems were and why the students working at Peppercorn were unhappy and why recruitment for additional student help was unsuccessful. Actually, Peppercorn used to be predominantly run by student workers, but in recent years, due to the shortage of student workers, temporary workers had to be brought in to fill the gaps and keep the diner running. Eye appeal, smell and textures have now become involved in a complete dining experience. Dining Hall

...Barrett dining hall through diverse selection of food, communal tables and casual dress creates an inclusive dining experience for students. When you walk into the dining hall for your first time as a college student, it seems a bit like a zoo. With people all over the place, running to grab the last piece of pizza; we all have a different view on our dining hall. When I walk in the first thing I see are patrons eating. Some people are by themselves eating alone and on their cell phones, or some people by themselves are studying, waiting for the next class to start. Most people are in groups conversing with new people, trying to meet as many people as possible. All over the world, food is used to bring people together. Working in the restaurant industry for two years I’ve learned that the atmosphere of which you are eating in can enrich or worsen your experience. The open floor plan of the dining hall creates easy access from all directions of Barrett, making it easy for students to get to the dining hall no matter where they are coming from. The open seating plan also makes is less awkward to sit by yourself when you’re grabbing a quick bowl of cereal before your 9am class. The area is spacious, and can hold a lot of students in different sections. The modern design is accentuated with this open floor plan. Right from the beginning, with the help of Erica’s firsthand experience, each member was able to grasp a brief understanding of the daily procedures necessary for a successful day of service. Given such a brief time for data collection, each member seemed to do a good job at retrieving interview and observation data. One thing I noticed was the cohesiveness of Lynn, Roger and Erica. They never let a moment slip by without collecting some type of information and sharing it with each other. With respect to data gathering in general, I believe it was an affective attempt at diagnosis. With no set game plan, each member was able to sit down and converse with various members of the unit and still allow for normal day operations. No employees seemed to dislike their presence and each interview gave a unique viewpoint of the dining area with specific and useful data. However, the content of their data seemed to be a little unorganized and rushed. Seeing as though they only had a few days to collect and conduct their results, I understand their obstacles.
