Persistence

To persist is “to hold firmly and steadfastly to a purpose”. To persist is “to undertake besides obstacles”. To persist means “to continue in existence; to last” (Persist 628). The history of mankind is a great example of persistence. Every human being has strived for the goal of survival. It is our natural instinct as animals. We have moved from caves to skyscrapers, from slingshots to rifles. At first we traveled afoot, then on horseback, and now we travel by automobile, even jet planes. Humans carry on to be the best. The first humans did this to out-live other species. As human population grew, so did technology. People did not have to worry about other animals any longer, but each other. Now we strive to be better than one another. One major aspect of becoming the best is improving oneself. Persistence is the ability to move forward through situations where a goal is desired, yet hardships arise.

Persistence is very profound in the work place. The owners and CEO figure ways they can make the most money from their goods or services. Employees work to impress their bosses, hoping for a raise or bonus. Most employees work towards a promotion. Whether for respect from their co-workers, self-respect, or simply the idea of making more money, people try to advance themselves with in a company. This aspect is the person’s goal. If they are determined to achieve this goal, they will attempt to do so even if seemingly endless obstacles stand in their way. This is persistence. This trait is not only shown in the workplace, however.

At high school many student may not care enough to achieve straight A’s or a high ACT score. Though, as that student advances into the latter years of high school, he or she may start to realize that these things will affect which college they may attend, scholarships they can earn, and fields of study they can go in to.…...

Food deprivation had no significant effect on concentration scores, which is consistent with recent research on the effects of food deprivation (Green et al., 1995; Green et al., 1997). ...Kathya Delgado Spring 2013 2649908 Equiano’s Battle: Faith and Perseverance It was no secret the sufferings and renderings many slaves had came across during “The Middle Passage”; it wasn’t just torture and pain but most of all self discovery of their new reality. However, through the good and the bad, Equiano even at his lowest never gave up on faith. Olaudan Equiano has always made faith the foundation of his acceptance of European religion/customs while also getting maintaining self righteous individuality. To truly understand the battle of individuality and beliefs Equiano felt during his lifetime, one must be familiar with his childhood. The idea of faith and destiny was greatly rooted in Equiano, that the minute they captured Equiano and his sister away from his family he already knew this was his destiny for he mentioned “ but alas! Ere long it was my fate to be thus attacked, to be carried off” (Equiano, 1999). Equiano depended much on his...

Running on Empty: The Effects of Food Deprivation on Concentration and Perseverance Many things interrupt people’s ability to focus on a task: distractions, headaches, noisy environments, and even psychological disorders. To some extent, people can control the environmental factors that make it difficult to focus. However, what about internal factors, such as an empty stomach? Can people increase their ability to focus simply by eating regularly? One theory that prompted research on how food intake affects the average person was the glucostatic theory. Several researchers in the 1940s and 1950s suggested that...

Perseverance

...Perseverance Good morning teacher and classmates. Have you ever thought about perseverance, or at least how to persevere? That’s why I’m here today, to talk about perseverance. Perseverance means a steady effort to maintain a course of action, belief, or purpose in spite of difficulty. In order to persevere, pain and a lot of hard thinking will be needed. Perseverance basically means to continue doing something in spite of obstacles. Success in life doesn't come easily. When a kid learns to stand up and tries to walk, he is found to fall down again and again. And by nature and instinct, he gets up, and again tries to step forward, although again he falls down. But ultimately, he succeeds in walking. The same thing had once happened with each one of us, when we were children. A person who perseveres has self-confidence, determination, and hardworking, that person tries again and again, and finally has success. Perseverance is the secret of success. Without it, achievements are not possible. A person who is very intelligent, and good at school, but is lethargic by nature, and reluctant to diligence, can hardly prosper in life, because he does not know how to use his brain and labor in the right direction. In this world, all the great things have been made or constructed only by perseverance. Shakespeare did not compose such voluminous works just in a day. He had to work hard during days and nights with tremendous perseverance to create such great masterpieces. The......

Perseverance

...Perseverance is the persistence in carrying on with something despite the delay in achieving success. The theme of perseverance in runs through both ‘Robinson Crusoe’ by Daniel Defoe and ‘Alive’ by Piers Paul Read. ‘Robinson Crusoe’ is a fiction adventure novel about a young man who manages to survive for many years on an island before returning home to Europe. However; ‘Alive’ is a literary non-fiction text that provides a detailed account of a rugby team along with their friends and family, who managed to survive for 72 days and get off the mountains after their plane crashed into the Andes in 1972. In Alive, perseverance is shown through the extract many times, in trying to maintain a society up in the mountains, and perseverance to eat the flesh of their friends through reasoning with their conscience. In contrast, the extracts from Robinson Crusoe show perseverance is shown through Robinson feeling desolate and isolated on the island but manages to persevere through the reasoning with conscience and religion when he tells himself he is in a better condition than he could be in. In the second extract I have chosen from Robinson Crusoe is where he starts to lose faith, and he feels empty and alone in his deserted island, but then he regains his faith in God through reading the bible, which gives him strength to persevere. The writer’s use of language changing over time, settings and the reasoning with characters conscience through religion and their actions......

Perseverence

...Jacob Smith Professor Chao English 200 30 November 2013 Perseverance Perseverance is a characteristic every living organism has that can make life more practicable. While some people express it more than others, perseverance is a great characteristical trait for a person to have because it not only shows fight but leads to success. When we have that burning desire to achieve something, it is a great feeling of accomplishment when the goal we strive for is fulfilled. Unfortunately, during our pathway, on the road to success, there will be bumps and setback standing in our way. Only through perseverance can we conquer those obstacles that stand in our way. Perseverance is defined by Merriam-Webster dictionary to be: “continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition.” No matter ones culture or what factors life has thrown your way, perseverance is always the instinctual force that tells the subconscious to never quit. Perseverance through strength and determination can be seen in our countries early foundation. It was perseverance that led to westward expansion for inexpensive land, and leads in an age of manifest density and shaped our country. My favorite quote of perseverance is from Disney's Finding Nemo. Through perseverance the protagonist tries to get his son home and only succeeds because he continually reaffirms himself to “just keep swimming, just keep swimming”. With no way to avoid a challenge, you must continue and......

A Mountain of Perseverance

...Justin Barrientes 3/22/2016 Santos/2 p.m./English A Mountain of Perseverance As I began to think about whom has had the most significant impact on my life, I began to think of everyone who has been involved in my academic and athletic careers. I realized that I was looking at all the wrong aspects of my life. Many of these people have come and gone throughout my life, yet through all of them one individual remained constant, my mother. My mother is by far, the greatest superhero in our comic book that “The Barrientes Boys” call “life”. She has the strength and perseverance of an elephant and the loyalty and courage of a lion. Her heart and determination are traits that we can only hope to have one day for ourselves. Our mother is a strong woman. Whether by continuously working her way up the mountain of parenthood, pushing herself to go to night school after long strenuous days at work, or combatting the crippling parasite we call “breast cancer”, she has never overlooked her role as a mother. According to her, “she has never swayed from her virtues and she felt it was her duty to instill in her boys the same values, principles, and virtues that were instilled in her”. (Barrientes, M) If there is one thing our mother has shown us, is that with a positive attitude, determination, perseverance, and the right amount of effort, anything can be accomplished by anyone. “I have watched my wife struggle with running a household while trying to juggle returning to college......
