Introduction

This handout was created to inform people about the seriousness of domestic violence, and the services available. To let people know that there is help out of a nightmarish situation and that you don’t have to feel alone, because you are not alone. We will discuss the economic situation at hand, why the programs are needed, and the process of services and the benefits of the program.
Economic situation
When any of physical form of violence occurs, the intent is to cause harm, usually mild to severe bodily injury. But, domestic violence can also cause emotional damage as well. Such damages incur costly medical expenses. These cost can exceed a little over 4 billion dollars per year. (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 2007) Some of these victims don’t have the medical insurance to cover the cost. Not only does acts of domestic violence cost us in medical services. The emotional and physical tolls that the victim suffers can have an effect on the community around them. Whether, it be family, friends, neighbors, co-workers. These injuries can cause victim to miss work, school and other activities.
Domestic violence is much more than just a male/female (usually intimate) violence encounters. Domestic violence is a much more diverse and broad problem. Domestic violence affects all age, race, genders, religion and sexual orientation. It also comes various forms, sexual, emotional, physical, psychological and even economical. Like a cancer it spreads and affect the abused as well as the people around them. ...The Public Needs to Know(revised) Assignment 2.1 Joshua Hall Eng115 Professor Kimberly Sinnott 06/11/13 Developing new drugs for cancer patients has many issues that slows production of effective drugs. Cancer treatments and research for new and better medicine is one of the largest and most expensive developments. Trail and error in producing effective medication is extremely grueling. This has been going on for years,It has always been a problem with the managing of good care for a low price. When Companies conduct expensive research the companies want to make profit. Most of the drugs that have been introduced are expensive and provide few of the benefits that patients expect. According to the American Cancer Society, usually treatments and medications given to patients have side affects that often cause worst health problems to the patients. The process of accumulating components for prospective medications in the use of cancer treatment is an extremely long process. In most cases, the development takes years to even get a single drug to be manufactured for patient consumption. It must go through several fascists of laboratory testing. “From a “target” to a “drug”, to “trial” then finally, an approved medication in the fight against cancer” (Giulio Draetta M.D., 2012) Researchers use unique processes that extract compounds from natural......

...The Public Needs to Know By: Drea Johnson ENG115 February 24, 2013 The homeless population in America, as well as the metro Atlanta region is not what it used to be 20 years ago. The Giving to Live organization is working hard and often to see that the rate continues to decrease as well as offer up as much help as they can to take care of those who are still in need. The Giving to Live organization feeds about 50,000 homeless people per year. 40%-60% of those homeless people are employed but cannot afford meals. This organization not only provides food assistance to the homeless but also to others with varying circumstances on a daily basis. This is not an easy task. Several steps and precautions go into making sure this happens. Sometimes, circumstances that are beyond man's control causes changes to take place without notice and some may suffer still. But Giving to Live works diligently with many community workers and volunteers to see that meals are prepared and food is available for homeless families/children, low-income families with children, the elderly, transitional facilities, and orphanages. The number one benefit of Giving to Live is to decrease the number of hungry people in city of Atlanta and in the southern region of America. This factor, though not the only one, is what keeps our director, Ms. Miriam Wilson and her team working around the clock to take care of so many. As a member of this organization, I have been doing some research on......

...The Public Needs to Know – Draft Version Harikrishna osuru Strayer university Prof. Dennis Millan English 115 08-04-2014 In many states, the nutrition of our children has come under review. Our children are getting fatter, and the school lunches have become less healthy. Something needs to be done to correct this tragedy. Due to the heightening number of obese children, the school board has decided to change the breakfast and lunch menus to include healthier choices and exclude the options very high in sugar and fat. The main economic issue is that the high sugar and high fat items in the grocery store are being marketed toward children. Candy often has very colorful packages and pictures of popular cartoon characters to catch the attention of the children that see it. A contributing main issue is the fact that the parents either do not have time or just do not want to cook for their family. The result of this is a family that will always dine out and spend money eating unhealthy food. Fig.1 The cost of healthy meals will be more expensive than the normal meals would be. The school and the parents would have to meet in the middle with the cost. The cost would be split in the middle with the parents paying half the extra cost and the school paying the other half. When the children aren’t eating unhealthily, they are not exercising. Video games and television have replaced outdoor activities that require running and sweating. Water had been...

...The Public Needs To Know: School Meal Programs English 115 Prof. David Makhanlall August 10, 2014 We know that food is fuel. In order for children to be successful in the classroom, they must be well nourished. For millions of American children, a school meal is the best meal they are going to eat each day. Currently 39.7% of youth in Mississippi are overweight or obese, for these students school lunches provide valuable nutrition that they may not get at home. The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the School Breakfast Program (SBP) are federally funded programs that provide meals to over one hundred thousand schools across America. The recent changes to the school meal programs intend to combat the growing trend of child hood obesity with the ultimate goal of providing healthy, well-balanced and nutritious school breakfast and lunches. The majority of people understand that nutrition and health directly relates to physical and mental development. In children, nutrition affects their physical health and cognitive development. The revised school lunch and breakfast program provides more nutritional options, such as whole grain instead of refined white breads, for school age children. Prior to the revision, school food programs were under a lot of scrutiny and criticism. Fewer than 30% of schools followed the nutrition guidelines, the USDA was doing a poor job at enforcing the regulations. On top of the second-rate lunches schools served, they were also......

...The Public needs to Know - Draft Version Tonya Addison Dr. Ryan ENG115 11/02/2014 Opening a free clinic can be a very good way to give back to the community, but is also a challenging thing to do. There are many legal, supply, volunteer recruitment, fund-raising and management issues to be considered. First step would be to recruit a team consisting of doctors, office help, an accountant and legal attorney. Keep in mind your legal help should be familiar with medical laws and setting up nonprofit businesses. Be sure to get someone with plenty of experience in knowledge of how to fund programs, like Medicare or other local, state and federal programs. You should advertise in the newspaper, with local businesses and at local hospitals to bring volunteers. It would be good to hold meetings to discuss your future clinic needs and requirements of the staff. It would also be a great idea to consider recruiting volunteers for cleaning, reception and office work from local high schools or universities. Second decide on the main services that your clinic will offer which should be based on your local demographic. You can get information about the main needs of the local uninsured from the health department. For example, you can determine that there may be a large number of uninsured adults and children in your community or a large migrant population. In that case, you would want a bilingual staff or at least a people who can communicate with clients and patients that speak...

...The Public Needs To Know Christina D. Cromwell Professor Wayne Marshall English 115-English Composition January 31, 2015 People in the community, without typical means, should have a place to go for medical treatment just like everyone else. Unemployment and no insurance should not be what keeps people from getting the proper medical treatment. The new free clinic opening in our community will be available for adults and children who do not have traditional means of obtaining medical treatment. There will be several doctors on site with a wide range of specialties. Many have practices focusing on certain types of medical problems and some who can assist with any general issues. In some cases, patients may have to visit doctors off site. Because we are aware that some patients may not have the means to get to other areas, we will provide a shuttle service on preassigned days for this very reason. Doctors are volunteering their knowledge as well as their time to raise awareness and help those in the community in which some of them grew up in. We are aware that examination and knowledge is but a portion of what is needed. For this reason, we have partnered with some local pharmacies who will provide medication at a substantial discount and even free of charge in some cases. Patients will be informed of everything every step of the way and be given the same assistance as if they were paying customers. Each new patient will complete a short questionnaire......

...Assignment 2.2: The Public Needs to Know English 115 Professor Wylder The current status of school meals is that they are full of fat and do not contain enough nutritious value. There are changes that need to be made in order to preserve the health and wellbeing of the children in society. The changes to be made are in the school breakfast and lunch programs. In order to effectively change the program you have to understand the economic issues, the population that is being served and their needs, the process and the benefits of the program. One major economic issue is the rising ate of unemployment. This has forced society into a time filled with burden and stress. Unemployment forces struggling families to figure out how to feed their children with limited to no resources. This burden has caused a rise in the number of children participating in the breakfast and lunch program. The increase in participation has gone up by about 84% for free and reduced lunches alone. The participation is also rising because it is cheaper for a family to feed their child at school than it is to send their lunch (School Nutrition Association, 2008). The rising rate of participation shows that families are in dire need of assistance. The families are turning to the schools for assistance to ensure that their children have food to eat. Another economic issue that American families face today is being underemployed. Being underemployed is when you only a have part time job(s) or you take...

...The Public Needs to Know – Revised Version Robbie A Johnson Gabriel Smith ENG115 08/07/15 Obesity in the United States has reached epidemic proportions, creating the first generation of children in history which is predicted to have a shorter lifespan than their parents(theccfblog.org). There are many long-term health problems obese children may develop as they continue into adulthood. In an organized effort to fight child obesity in today's schools, the Arkansas state school board has implemented a new breakfast and lunch program that promotes good nutrition and overall health. Obesity can begin at a very young age. Children may be screened by the age of 2(helpguide.org). Many children in our society are overweight, setting themselves up for serious health problems later in life. Diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, and heart disease are some of the risks. Overweight children also feel less happy, more anxious, and face the possibility of harassment and discrimination. Credit may be given to genetic evolution or hereditary as the sole cause, therefore developing a slower metabolism to retain nutrients longer. However, there are many variables that play a role in its development. High sugar, calorie dense foods seem to be a prime factor here. The sugar in these foods first goes directly into the blood stream, then into the liver, finally becoming stored in fat cells. This newly state-funded program sets to reform the breakfast and lunch that is offered to today's...

...The Public Needs To Know Arlette Perez Professor Traci Wilmoth English Composition 115 2/07/2012 Childhood obesity has tripled in the past 30 years. In 1980, the obesity rate of 6-11 year olds was 6.5%; in 2008 it tripled to 19.6%. For toddlers and preschoolers aged 2-5, the obesity levels have risen from 5% to 12.4% in the same amount of time. Schools do not generally provide healthy food options, and kids with meal assistance plans have no choice but to consume unhealthy food items. Even kids with options often have an array of processed snacks, fried foods, sweets and sodas to purchase, and very few healthy options (Spark 2009). It is time to change the way our youth eats. According to a recent Brookings Institute report, health economists have estimated that obesity will cost the U.S. about $215 billion. The report identified the four major categories that contribute to that amount: direct medical costs, productivity costs, transportation costs and human capital costs (Hammond, Levine, 2010). In other words, obesity has a direct effect on four areas that usually have a direct effect on the American economy. With more than 60 percent of Americans considered at least overweight and one-third considered obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it will not be long before obesity is an expected portion of taxpayer money (CDC.gov). Obesity does affect the economy, healthcare and unemployment. And it will take more than grassroots movements......

...The Public Needs to Know – Revised Version Holly A. Easton Strayer University, Florence Campus August 16, 2012 It is common knowledge that the recent economic downturn and high unemployment levels have put serious pressure on the ability of many families to provide adequate nutrition for themselves. There has been a definite uptick in the dependence on Food stamps and other government resources to help make ends meet. Unfortunately, that is not always enough. The fight against hunger is not just about being hungry. Lack of proper nutrition is a hindrance to our children. Our children growing up hungry can potentially affect their overall health, education, and adult economic stability. The direct economic impact of hunger and food insecurity in America resulted in Federal expenditures for food assistance programs totaling approximately $103.3 billion in fiscal year 2011. This was an 8 percent increase from the year before. This was also the eleventh consecutive year that food assistance expenses increased and the fifth where they exceeded previous historical record. (Oliveira, 2012) The following graph shows the drastic monetary increase in billions for the SNAP or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program from 1970 to 2011. The indirect economic impact of hunger and food insecurity in America is shown in many different ways. One very important example is the rising costs of special education. Food insecurity has been shown to have a direct impact on a......
