Raving Fans

A new area manager nervously approached his office in a business that had continually failing customer service. They had cycled through various managers before him who were fired after eight months of trying to improve the satisfaction of their customers. This new manager had no idea how he would be able to fix this problem especially since many before him had failed as well. Just as he was feeling his worst, a man had appeared on his couch with a set of golf clubs. The manager was confused as the mysterious man went on to explain that he was his Fairy Godmother and that they needed to go play golf and sort out the manager’s problem. Charlie, the Fairy Godmother, was, in fact, a man who claimed to have three secrets to turn the new area manager into a complete success when it came to satisfying customers. Reluctant and bewildered, the area manager proceeded to his car to play golf with Charlie. After the round of golf, Charlie took the area manager to a bookstore within a mall to get a birthday present for the manager’s wife. The area manager was warmly greeted immediately as he walked in the store before asking the clerk for a book that was out of stock. The clerk quickly went out of her way to another store to buy the book and wrap it for the area manager for the same price she bought it for at the other store. As if he wasn’t surprised enough, the manager was then led by Charlie to the owner of this store whose office was in the middle of the store overlooking everyone! Leo, the owner, gave the area manager a golden bracelet with a shield in the middle that read “Decide What You Want.” With that, Charlie took the area manager to a grocery store named Sally’s to learn the meaning. ...8 Views of Edo (Edo Hakkei): Fan Prints by Ukagawa Hiroshige Ukiyo-e, also called “pictures of the floating world” revolutionized art for Japan and for the rest of the world. Artists practicing Ukiyo-e would carefully craft woodblock prints depicting scenes of daily life against the backdrop of Japan’s landscapes. However, these scenes were far from ordinary. Each subject pops off the page with color and thrives within a scene of meticulous detail. Whether it be a landscape or a lively city scene, each print is eye-catching and unique. Some of these prints are well-known today, such as Hokusai’s The Great Wave or Hiroshige’s Sudden Shower Over Shin-Ohashi Bridge and Atake , but most remain relatively unknown. Utagawa Hiroshige was a famous master of Ukiyo-e prints with a wide variety of artwork on a variety of media. One such medium was uchiwa-e, fan prints. These images, although not as well-known, represent a great amount of his work. In particular, his 8 Views of Edo (Edo Hakkei), was very popular during his time. This collection, entitled Hakkei, is a series of scenes portraying beautifully dressed geisha women placed in the foreground of famous sites in Edo. Each plate includes a different location, including Mount Fuji, Ryogoku, Tsukuda and the Sumida River. Interestingly enough, Utagawa Hiroshige’s intention was to capture and popularize the majestic beauty of these places, not their geisha subjects. ...Fan Coil Routine Cleaning 1. Gather all necessary equipment and supplies prior to setting up at the fan coil, see below. 2. Prepare the fan coil for servicing by clearing a work space around the unit and proceed to cover the floor with a sheet of clean 4 or 6 mil polyethylene sheeting. 3. Set up at the fan coil unit being careful not to use the occupants’ furniture as a work station. 4. Turn both the thermostat and the circuit breaker to the OFF position which supplies electricity to the fan coil. Take note of the thermostat settings prior to turning the unit off. 5. ...There are three types of sports fans — which one are you? THE CASUAL FAN: Casual-Fans are fans who aren't particularly into their fandom. They enjoy it, know some trivia, see some movies, have some stuff. Casual-Fans are more laid back.  This is probably most of my friends. They have their favorite sports teams but they don’t make the effort to watch every game. They know the name of the key players on the roster but that’s it. When the game is on, they’ll watch it but if something else is interesting on TV, they’ll go to that channel instead. These kinds of fans won’t know every single rule for the game but they understand how the sport is played. These fans aren’t bandwagoners because they actually know things about the team and go to games. Sports is great to them, but there are other things that occupy their free times most often. THE REAL FAN I would say this fits me perfectly. I am all of the above except I do make an effort to watch all the games and I do know what’s going on around the league. I have an extensive knowledge of the team roster and standings. The team and league history can be filed in my memory bank without any problem. An example given was the Ritz-Carlton and its superb service. However, Raving Fans suggests that every business should strive for the quality of service that a brand like Ritz-Carlton provides. The book ultimately suggests that by focusing solely on cost or variety that the business loses the overall picture that includes the customer. Southwest is a prime example of this. They have differentiated themselves on value for years, yet no customer is a “raving fan”. ...Types of Fans A fan is a person who is fond of a certain thing, person, food, sports or any such things. N my opinion a fan is divided in three categories: - part time fans, die hard fans and optimistic fan. Let me explain this concept using a soccer match. A part time fan is one who does not have any particular team as his favorite, but he just enjoys watching the game as he is more overwhelmed by the sport than the players. Part time fans could also be people who follow a sport they like based on their availability. In the sense they follow a team or a sport based on their availability and convenience and don’t necessarily go to the stadium to watch their team play.
