... Benefit of the new public management There is a lot of benefit can be defined in the government that establish New Public Management (NPM). Firstly NPM attempted to diminish the role of the state and make the managers in various agencies become more responsive to be a political leader. ...Introduction to Literature (ADI1303A) Reader-response approach was the best way to look at The Story of an Hour. I connected on different levels with the story of a woman who fell out of love with her husband. The short story is written with two tones one of somber and one of joy. The writer goes between the two and shows how one event can span different emotions. The Story of an Hour is a wonderfully written short story that spoke to me. The two completely different tones of the piece drew me in. The story begins with a somber mood as the lady of the home is being told about the death of her husband. “She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance.” The tone in this sentence can be seen as somber, but it my also have a happy undertone. The loss of your soul mate should be a sad event, but perhaps that may not always be the case. As the story goes on the tone changes to one of elation as Mrs. Mallard begins to realize she is free from her husband. She begins to imagine her life without the burden of pretending to be in love with him. She makes her way down the stairs only to find her husband waiting at the end. Her heart condition gets the best of her and she dies on the spot. The last sentence brings the tone full circle and back to somber. The drama in this short story grabbed my attention, the tones changed fast. Reader-response approach looks at how a reader will connect with a......

Reader Meter

...neighboring Mitchell County. This  expansion concerned Judy. The company workforce had increased by 30 percent the previous year, and Judy had struggled to recruit enough qualified job applicants. She knew that new expansion would intensify the problem.  Judy is particularly concerned about meter readers. The tasks required in meter reading are relatively simple. A person drives to homes served by the company, finds the gas or electric meter, and records its current reading. If the meter has been tampered with, it is reported. Otherwise, no decision making of any consequence is associated with the job. The reader performs no calculations. The pay was $8.00 per hour, high for unskilled work in the area. Even so, Judy had been having considerable difficulty keeping the 37 meter reader positions filled.  Judy was thinking about how to attract more job applicants when she received a call from the human resource director, Sam McCord. “Judy,” Sam Said “I’m unhappy with the job specification calling for only a high school education for meter readers. In planning for the future, we need better-educated people in the company. I’ve decided to change the education requirement for the meter reader job from a high school diploma to a college degree”.  “But, Mr. McCord,” protested Judy, “the company is growing rapidly. If we are to have enough people to fill those jobs we just can’t insist that college graduates get paid to do such basic tasks. I don’t see how we can meet our......

...ESTABLISHING A COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS PACKAGE LEONARD ANTHONY 3085841 Questions I would have to consider before establishing compensation and benefits package are; what is the purpose of the business I am in? Is it a high turnover industry? Is the industry targeted employees targeted for short-term employment? Am I in the peoples business or is my business predicated on the performance of employees? Once those questions have been answered, I would be able to establish a compensation and benefits package. For this paper I will take the later that my industry or field does experience turnover but it consist of employees that are committed to the company and looking for long term employment. The first things I would have to consider are my direct (cash) and indirect (benefits) compensation package. My direct compensation package would consist of salary, hourly wages and bonus. Factors that would affect my direct compensation package are supply and demand, labor unions and the company’s ability to pay and its productivity and government regulations according to (Montana & Charnov, 2000, p 222). Supply and Demand dictates the availability of qualified people within the area to do the job. If the economy is doing well then their will be great competition in attracting qualified candidates to do the job, this means management would have to pay a higher dollar amount to qualified candidates. If the market is slow then there will be a surplus of qualified and......

...Employee Benefits Employee benefits is very important benefit that every employee should be looking at when it comes time to search for a job. Many companies offer a lot of employee benefits, however; there are some that are more important than others. When the organization is developing and planning their benefit package, there is information that is very important for the planning process and then there is other information that is not as important when it comes to the planning process. The most important information when it comes to planning process for employee benefits would be compensation(2014). You have to have a good compensation package for your employees based on their experience, education, and knowledge. When employees are searching for jobs, one of the first things they want to know is how much they will be making per an hour or if it is salary, the employee will want to know how much their salary is going to be. So that would be one of the most important things to consider when planning for the process of employee benefits. The second most important thing when a company is planning for employee benefits would be medical insurance. Most companies offer health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, and prescription coverage. Now a days, every person has to have health insurance due to the Obama care so that is why the medical insurance is one of the most important things to plan when planning the employee’s benefits process. Reader Response

...S. McDonald Professor Williams ENC 1102 12 January 2011 Reader Response 1 The first time I read “The Cranes” by Peter Meinke, it appeared to be nothing more than a story about an elderly couple sitting in their car at the Gulf of Mexico reflecting on their lives together. However, the second time I read the short story, I began to pick up on the author’s symbolism. It wasn’t until I read the story for a third time that I realized the couple was committing suicide. I truly enjoyed this story. There is so much more to it than I originally thought. The initial shock of realizing that the husband and wife were taking their own lives was quite disturbing to me. However, I was greatly comforted by the couple’s sense of humor in these final moments of their lives. They were so completely at ease with one another. The author uses descriptions of three different kinds of birds to convey an image of how the couple must view themselves and the world around them at this point in their lives. “Along the marshy shore two tall stately birds, staring motionless toward the Gulf, towered the bobbing egrets and scurrying plovers.” (Meyer 621) The first clue the author gives that there is more to the story than there first appears to be is the mention of the shower curtain on the front seat. “the shower curtain spread over the front seat crackled and hissed.” (Meyer 622) The next clue is when the wife questions if they are......

A Reformation Reader

...Introduction A reformation reader is a book edited by Denis Janz in which he brings lesser known documents and figures to luminosity. Janz makes the context reformation clearer by including the pre-Reformation Catholic sentiments authors and discussing about the Counter Reformation and the Catholic Council of Trent. He brings up different scholarly arguments on how to interpret the Reformation. Janz tries us much as he can to stay neutral and give explanations on what the questions are. He therefore, provides documents that hold the ability to place challenges on both viewpoints and supports a study of the texts themselves. In his book, Janz includes opinions explaining the significance of both Martin Luther and John Calvin. This paper is therefore, intended on highlighting the significance of these two individuals and contrasting the opinions contained in writings of each. The significance of Martin Luther Many people wonder why there exists a great fuss over martin Luther and the Protestant reformation. They also don’t understand how and why this German monk turned out to be a lightning rod for change in religion and community in Europe during the Renaissance. Many people also do not comprehend the significance of the circumstances and the importance Luther and his persuade on the Reformation and how it affects them in the present days. Back in 1520 Luther was thought of as an insightful church leader and other thought of him as an ecclesiastical terrorist. His......

Reader Response

...Reader Response for story “Boys and Girls” I was inspired after reading the story “Boys and Girls”, although I am a male, but I still can feel the emotion of the character in the story, because the story “Boys and Girls” happened in 1960-1970s, however, the gender discrimination is more serious at that time in China. I was born in big city in China, and I am only child in the family. Even I am a boy; I already realized the gender difference and discrimination. I think in China lots of women have similar story just like the girl in the “Boys and Girls”. China is a traditional country; when I was a little boy, children are usually raised by the elders in the family before they go to primary school, because parents are very busy, they need to work every day. I was raised by my grandparents too, I am only child in the family so I cannot feel gender discrimination in that time, until I got on the primary school, my best friend in class is came from countryside, his situation and living environment is very different with me. He was raised with his older sister in his grandparent’s house; he could feel his grandparents treat he better than his sister. They grandparents usually offer he the better food and clothes than his older sister. When he made mistakes they would not blame he much but not his sister. And his older sister’s mother dislikes him and his mother, he was confused, till his mother told his, his aunt is jealous......

...Kava Not Only A Relaxant But Also Helps With Muscle Growth, Which Can Benefit an Entire Economy. Christopher Hruby Plants and Civi Section 2 Christopher Hruby Plant and Civi Section 2 Kava Not Only A Relaxant But Also Helps With Muscle Growth, Which Can Benefit an Entire Economy. Kava has always been known for a relaxant that can cause health issues if used in large amounts. But there are also benefits to the plant as well. The South Pacific Kava plants roots provide a natural relaxant, while at the same time allowing an increase in muscle growth to increase as well. Since the economies of countries in the South Pacific such as Fiji are dependent on this plant; it can be sold for the use in work out supplements to promote muscle growth. Which the demand for new work out supplements is always at a high level and that is why the economy of Fiji would increase for growing this plant. The Kava plant is also known as the Piper methysticum. It is a perennial shrub and it is part of the piperacea family (Sarris and Scholey, 2012). Kava is from the South Pacific region of the world. This is one crop that truly only grows in this region. Seeing how it needs the warm weather and the moist ground in order to flourish (Sarris and Scholey, 2012). Although the plant only grows in the region of Fiji, the plant has not been needed in mass amounts as of now. This is because of the health issues to the liver that arose during the 1990’s, mainly Hepatotoxicity (Sarris and Scholey,......

Reader Response

...“An American Childhood” Reader’s Response Many details in Annie Dillard’s “An American Childhood” suggest that the author is retelling the events of an early childhood experience from the viewpoints of herself as an adult. Ms. Dillard’s essay uncovers the differences between how adults and children view the world and seek happiness. However, there are a couple points to this essay. It seems as though, one of the author’s main points was to convey the message that some of the simplest moments in her life were also the happiest and most memorable. For example, she says, “I got in trouble throwing snowballs, and have seldom been happier since”. Also, I noticed that the author seemed to be motivated to inspire readers to chase life’s experiences passionately until one is satisfied. In the essay the author uses two rhetorical modes: narration and description. Ms. Dillard uses narration to describe her perspective of what it was like to be a child in America. In addition to using narration she also describes the intricate details of that particular winter day “Six inches of new snow had just fallen. We were standing up to our boot tops in snow on a front yard trafficked Reynolds Street slowly and evenly; they were targets all but wrapped in red ribbons, cream puffs.” (91). In relation to the unit theme: The shaping of Identity this writing piece uses an autobiographical narrative and flashback writing techniques to portray the American Childhood. Ms. Dillard’s perspective of...

...started operations offering a good package of benefits to attract good talent. The benefits exceeded those of similar or larger companies. The original package offered Complete Medical, 3 week vacation plus all official Holidays paid, plus other non official Holidays, besides the company included five sick days that could be used or paid at the end of the year. Also the company offered a generous bonus at the end of the year (Martinez, 2010). The Medical covered 100% of the premiums for the employee , and his/her spouse and 50% on children- all with $500.00 deductible plan, and the company would cover the $500.00 deductible ( Martinez, 2010). When the cost of medical insurance exploded, Food Process and Control held on the same benefits until a couple of years later that was not affordable, so they needed to re- structure the benefit plan, especially because at this time they were looking at more employees and that was really affecting the cost in to the company (Martinez, 2010). To cut costs Food Process and Control reduced the coverage of spouse and children to only 50%, a couple of years later Food Process and Control was forced to eliminate our portion of the $500.00 deductible and change the plan to a $1000.00 deductible to reduce the escalating costs. As for dental insurance Food Process and Control has never offered dental insurance to its employees. Now its time for a re-structure the medial and dental benefits at FPC’s and that is why I am choosing......
