This essay will discuss a clinical skill in which I have become competent in practicing. I will use a reflective model to discuss how I have achieved the necessary level of competence in my nurse training programme. The reflective model I have chosen to use is Gibbs model (Gibbs 1988). Gibbs model of reflection incorporates the following: description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and an action plan (Gibbs 1988). The model will be applied to the essay to facilitate critical thought, relating theory to practice where the model allows. Discussion will include the knowledge underpinning practice and the evidence base for the clinical skill. A conclusion to the essay will then be given which will discuss my reflection skills, acknowledge my competence and show my personal and professional development.
The clinical skill I have chosen to reflect on within this essay is the administration of Intramuscular (IM) injections. I have chosen this as within my first clinical placement this was a widely used method of drug administration and I became involved in the process of IM injections. I therefore researched the topic of IM injections and my knowledge within this area developed.
The first stage of Gibbs (1988) model of reflection requires a description of events. I was asked to administer a drug to a patient via IM injection. I had observed this clinical skill on a variety of occasions and had previously administered an IM injection under supervision. On this occasion I was being observed by two qualified nurses, one of which was my mentor. The drug had been drawn up and was ready to be administered and the patient consented to have a student administer the injection. My mentor was talking me through the procedure step by step and informed me that I should use an alcohol wipe to cleanse the injection site, when the other nurse interrupted and said that this…...

...Reflective essay: Intro: Vital signs are a fundamental component of nursing care and indicate the body’s ability to maintain blood flow, regulate temperature and regulate oxygenate the body tissue. Taking vital signs are essential in revealing any sudden changes in the body, which could potentially indicate clinical deterioration of the patient. As a first year student I was assigned to take a patients vital sighs while my peer videoed it. Throughout the video blood pressure, pulse, respirations, and temperature was recorded to check if everything was in normal range, while ensuring a comfortable environment, and communicating with the patient to build trust and confidence in my ability to make an accurate assessment and judgement on the results of her vital signs results. Para 1: hand wash Prior to taking the vital signs, I demonstrated and explained how to theorectically wash your hand and dry them, this was a social hand wash lasting between 15 – 30 seconds (Tollefson, 2010). A social hand wash- The removal of any jewellery is essential before undertaking Hand hygiene and wash and must occur * before and after shifts, * between patients, and when * dealing with any bodily fluids. The social hand wash ensures the prevention of cross contamination between both patients/ staff and the increase of bacteria dispersing from one patient to another. Para 2: blood pressure I made sure that the environment was comfortable for the patient. Providing......

...POLS 432 Dr. Robert Wood Xu Zhao 0886325 Reflective Essay During 16 weeks, I had a lot of fun in this POLS 432 class. I chose this course because it was major required. As an international student, I felt a little scared at the beginning of the semester since I know nothing about the American policy and I don’t have any friends in this class. It took me a while to adapt into this class style. First, we started from Shambaugh/Weinstein book, and the West Wing episodes. Shambaugh/Weinstein book is about introduction of the Art of policymaking process. From the web book description, it says Author Paul J. Weinstein Jr., who was Chief of Staff of the White House Domestic Policy Council during Clinton's administration; he brought a unique and valuable insider's view to the book. This book also provides some real life examples that helped me a lot in reading some of the concepts. For example, I had no idea of how to write a memo when Dr. Robert Wood introduced us different types of memos. After class, I went back home and read the format of a memo and examples related to that memo, I got the idea about what is a memo look like and how to write it. Indeed, I think the time I get to know about what was going on and what this course is about is right before spring break. Dr. Robert Wood was very thankful. The midterm study guide he provided for us helped me a lot about knowing the course materials, especially the White House staff members. I have learned a lot while I......

...REFLECTIVE ESSAY FOR MARKETING, INNOVATION AND DESIGN Reflective writing is an intricate process of inscription, what one learned from a particular area and how it would be useful in the future. In my reflection I would construct an assertive image of what exactly happened during the marketing module. Looking at the outcome of my reasons to pursue my MBA, my strengths, and the areas I want to improve on. The marketing, development and Innovations module has the learning and developing goals for me as I see a clear need to reintegrate into the learning environment, since I do not have a first degree, I was exempted because of my eight years of management experience. Being part of a working world and doing a MBA means that I would be faced with many challenges, personally, professionally and educationally. However, I embraced the challenge even at times it was difficult to juggle my commitments. Initially my thoughts were that marketing module was simply about sales, however, it was mainly about Innovation and design. From the first lecture, the main thing that attracted me towards marketing was the efficient teaching style of the Lecturer, practically the way of explanation, teaching methods and the learning tools that the lecturer used which were mainly power point slides, which was then emailed to the class. The Lecturer motivated and encouraged me, this factor has positively contributed to the amount of interest I formed towards the subject. The marketing module......

...REFLECTIVE ESSAY #2 The first week of the Officer Academy was very overwhelming and frustrating. There was a lot of information to obtain and just trying to get into the rhythm of a new environment was not easy. I would say the most frustrating areas were incorporating the Identify, Differentiate, Determine and Predict (IDDP) process into the case studies, time management, and trying to comprehend that it’s okay not to know and understand the information presented to us. First of all, trying to incorporate IDDP into the case studies seems more foreign than the Japanese language. We were told that it’s something we do automatically, but now need to break it down and show how it’s done. After one week and three case studies, it’s still not easy to do. It seemed like more than one lesson fit, but as the instructor states, it’s important to pay attention to the small things as well such as when discussing Direction, Adaptation, and Communication (DAC) that it is from the leader rather than the audience. Secondly, my time management skills while attending the Academy have not been the greatest. I’m local to Joint Base San Antonio, so I’m trying to balance home and school, even though I can pass off some of my duties to my husband it’s still hard to let go of the other things. While he is out, I’m trying to tidy the house, or prepare the dinner. When my son and husband are home I don’t like the feeling that I neglect them. It’s difficult but I do know in order to pass,......

...REFLECTIVE THINKING ESSAY TWO This week I am going to focus on two things, the first being the most significant thing I learned last week. I learned last week that the leadership style that I seem to fall into is the Management by Exception style. The reason I use this style is due to the nature of the activity of my shop which tends to be idle until we get jobs specific to Aero Repair. I tend to stay in the MBE-Passive style while the shop is idle and move into the MBE-Active as the work arises. I discovered that as the shop is idle it is easy to fall into this style of MBE-Passive and kind of take a back seat and deal with things as they come up. When the shop gets work it tends to be time sensitive and require strong leadership, this is when I tend to adopt the MBE-Active style. The second thing I would like to cover this week is, if I could change one thing about my leadership, it would be to try and develop myself more into a Transformational leader. I feel that by developing myself more in this leadership style, it would have a direct impact on my personal development as a supervisor, and have a positive impact on my subordinates. By capitalizing on the idle time my shop has between major jobs, I could work on developing the four I’s within this leadership style. The key to this development would be to take a more active role in developing my subordinates as leaders, conducting training sessions, and working on my own personal technical growth. By being proactive......

...Reflective Essay Name Institution Date Having bestowed with the responsibility of Accountancy managerial in Southwest airlines, I was tasked with overlooking after all accounting operations in the organization. As an astute manager, I had to observe the contributions of the non–managerial employees as an important contribution that can facilitate the success of the organization. Thus, I took the necessary steps and measures to recognize and consider the efforts of all employees in the organization. This is one of the philosophies that drove me as an accountancy manager in the Southwest Airlines. My philosophy of management was partly derived from the Bolman and Deal philosophy where Harris had quoted a question on how much a manager shows the concern and sensitivity to people. He argues that the amount of consideration and sensitivity that he can show to his/her employees are directly proportional to the few grievances, less absenteeism and lower turnover in the organization ( Bolman & Deal, 2008). Organizational conflicts in the organization are inevitable and as a manager, I would address the competing interest to mitigate the destructiveness caused by the conflicts in the organization. In my managerial style, I try to build attentiveness in building and developing ties with both friend s and allies in order to ease conflict resolutions whenever it arises ( Bolman & Deal, 2008). The flow of communication is what I have given due attention as a manager. Not......

...Reflective Essay on Negotiation Zhaokun Lin 26096137 1. Introduction Negotiation is a conservation between two or more people intended to reach an understanding to satisfy various interests, so we can see that negotiation is pretty important in our many aspects of life such as working, collaborating or just making a friend. The ability to know how to negotiation effectively will be the key point in our decision making and our future work. In the week 4 tutorial, we were required to participate in a role play activity on negotiation that involved three characters: a manager (Dale Williams) and two subordinates (Pat Taylor and Chris Johnson). I was allocated to act the manager and my two friends were my subordinates. Because of the company regulation, the employees in the company must wear safety glasses to avoid accident no matter what the department they are in and how their experience is. But there are two issues on me which are that a 20-year experience staff, Pat Taylor always does not wear safety glasses while Chris Johnson who is just distributed to my department because he has bad relationship with previous manager. The responsibility of me is to conduct a negotiation and let them wear safety glasses. I think it is a really interesting activities and allow me to learn many thing from it. 2. ...Marcellus Bowie English 102 Reflective Essay Reflection English 102 has brought a really great point to me in life that no matter what class you are in you have to think creative. In the entire course there was nothing but writing. I can honestly say English 102 has taught me to be a better researcher and a better writer. The writing for me was super hard in the beginning of the course. I have never seen myself as a writer I suffer from an extreme case of writer’s block which causes me to give up without giving a shot at the work. The extra help has made me feel as writing will never shy away from you in life so just write. The annotated references played a big role throughout the course this semester. The role annotated references had been the whole outline of this course without the annotated I had nothing to write about. First I struggled with the concept of the references I realized that there wasn’t a research paper without the references. The references were one of the most time consuming aspect of the paper. The research question had to have a connection towards the refernces The difficulty I encountered in English 102 came about from the grasping of the material, the details in the rubric, and the guide lines. The biggest thing I had a problem with was staying on topic, and giving too much of my personal opinion in my writing. The structure of the class is made to stay on top of your independence of the reading and writing. During the course of the class......

...Reflective Essay I actually remember doing something similar to this my junior year in high school, the assignment was entitled “Me as a Writer.” How far have I truly come as a writer since then? Focusing on what this class has taught me, I can already say without any doubt that my writing has improved compared to what it was my first day of college. There were so many aspects of this class that positively influenced me as a writer. To name just a few: the discussion board, the assigned readings, and you as the instructor. The discussion board made me more open to criticism, it taught me that in order to become a good writer you must first learn to be a good communicator. You have to be able to communicate your ideas with others and listen to the ideas of others. It’s a sort of give and take process. Before, I was more closed minded on other people’s input on my work, I thought I could do just fine by myself for the most part. Now, I’m willing to listen to criticism and I understand how to use that criticism in order to better my writings. The readings were also super beneficial to my development as a writer. I learned so much about how to be an effective writer. I learned how to use certain techniques to improve the quality of my work. The readings allowed me to take a step back and see the art of writing as a whole, and then allowed me to focus in on specific characteristics of writing. For example, Kleine’s article taught me that I needed to become a more balanced......

...Student Name: Ouyang Jizhi Student ID: 25041568 Tutorial Time: 8am-10am Friday Tutor: Steve Perryman Reflective Essay on Negotiation During this tutorial we were asked to have a role play activity on negotiation which include three different characters: a manager (Dale Williams) and two subordinates (Pat Taylor and Chris Johnson), in which I was assigned to act as Pat Taylor, an experienced technical personnel in a medium-size company. From this role play I gained a deeper understanding of my preference of influence skills as well as a clearer vision of what I can do to improve them and apply them into practice on daily basis. Natural preferences for influencing tactics In the first role play my preference of tactics tend to be focusing on pressure and emotional appeal in that I did not really have enough time to prepare for the reasoning. When the manager Dale Williams mentioned the accident happened before which result in the new rigid policy of wearing safety glasses I failed to figure out how to refute except using the emotional skills such as pleading and flattery. When these moves turned in vain I changed my strategy into pressure. I cited that I was the most respected person in my team and I knew better in safety than anyone else in this firm. However I am aware that this statement is untenable and without support, which makes me even more passive in this situation. Afterward the manager Dale Williams finally begin to use the legitimized...

...Joshua Mage Eng-111 Reflective Essay Perspectives As Changing as the Tides It’s amazing how our perspective changes as we grow. I grew up a southern boy. As a matter of fact, my childhood home was about six blocks from the Gulf of Mexico, making my childhood about as southern as one could ever hope to have. I have fond memories of aquamarine waters. My childhood friends and I would hop on our bike with all the fishing gear we could muster up packed in a red ryder wagon attached securely to the back of our bikes with a little twine. The harbor master knew to look out for us, and knew which phone numbers to call, if we decided to start act foolishly. I spent a countless amount of time on that beach fishing, floundering, crabbing, and swimming in these waters. I relocated to the mountains when I was just hitting my teenage years. My adolescence was filled with all the perils, life lessons, and memories that have given that stage of life such a wonderful stigma. At the age of twenty, I married the girl next door (literally) and began my adult life. Shortly after getting married, we decided to take a road trip. We departed on a month and a half trip of the southern U.S. with the first stop being that of my home town. We arrived in the night, tired and road-worn from the nice twelve hour day on the country’s interstates. With sleep the only thing on our minds, we settled in at my family’s home. As I laid down, I was struck with excitement for what the next morning would......

...Module 6 Reflective Essay Prior into taking this course, I always been confused growing up in what’s the difference between psychology and sociology. Without a doubt, this class has put a spin on what’s the difference. I knew a lot about the social world we lived in and how it affected our daily lives but never thought that there was so many ways it has done so. As I look at our daily living and the difference terms that is associated to sociology I have learn in this short period that the social side is a big circle that interacts with each other. But how do we learn to live in it and survive in it. If we are educating ourselves on the structure of our its affecting us daily, maybe our world won’t be so bad. As I mentioned in the tread, I think what caught my attention and put everything in a perspective was the primary and secondary groups. When you ask us to list what we belong too and how it affects our daily lives. That assignment allowed me to see what part I actually play in the social side of society and obvious it’s a pretty important side, whether I’m helping society or the one that can be causing the problems. I learned the importance of the two groups and how it affects me and the ones around me, the involvement in the community, the involvement among my appears. My insight and what and who I belong affects someone and or something everyday. How we look at it, is what’s important. But we as a society are not educated on our problems and issues and......

...Reflective Essay Two I have learned a lot from being at NCOA from the past week. II am going to take this vast knowledge back to my work center and hopefully I will be able to improve the work environment there. We covered a lot I am going to discuss my “aha” moment, what I have learned from individual projects, and what I could change about my leadership. My “aha” moment was when we covered the four lenses. Especially when we learned what the four colors mean. I realized that by me being and orange I am very outgoing but I am also a gold and green. The orange and the gold are opposites and the green I tend to ask a lot of questions and panic over small things. Based on this lesson I realize why me and my supervisor tend to not get along its cause he is a blue and I am an orange. He is a true blue too he wears his emotions on his shirt sleeve. He is also very much into family. What I have learned from individual projects are that I can apply the lessons learned here to the reflective essay from last week and what kind of leader I perceive myself to be. While writing that essay was hard for me cause it is really hard to judge yourself. Plus then you have to perceive how your subordinates perceive you. I tried to be biased in that and it worked out I found that I am not much different than the other NCO’s in my. What I could change about my leadership is how I approach diversity. I have to take in to account the temperament of people, I have been bad about......

...REFLECTIVE ESSAY #2 During the past weeks, I had two lessons stand out for me, suicide awareness and wingman concepts. I think with my current career field these two lessons play a massive part in our day to day work environment. With the long hours and hard work, we have lost several to suicide and all of them could have been prevented by proper use of the wingman concept. As for wingman concept, if it was used more often than it is now, we would have less suicides and even alcohol related instances through out the maintenance field. For me suicide is a very rough and heart felt topic to talk about. Even harder to listen too as it hits home very hard. I lost my father when I was two years old to a self inflicted gun shot wound to the head, and now less then a year ago my ex wife shot herself due to her feeling like a failure to be a good wife and mother. With the suicide awareness lesson and the plethora of information that is brought to light, it now allows me to further understand why people often choose suicide and more over the signs leading up to it. If I had this knowledge a year ago, I would have been able to possibly prevent her attempt to take her life. Looking back to the months leading up to her attempted suicide, she had shown several signs that I did not pick up on as I was oblivious and didn’t look for any of the signs that would lead up to the incident. After going through the lesson in class and doing the readings, I can say she showed the following signs:...

...Reflective Essay During semester one, I found university very difficult as I am currently having a lot of family problems, consequently I have had to balance university life with a part time job and regular tips home, (which is down south). I am very disappointed with my grades for semester one, as I am hoping to graduate with a 2.1 next year. Having failed this module, I have assessed my current situation and have come up with some solutions to ensure it does not happen again. Firstly, my attendance for the module was not of a satisfactory level, having had to go home frequently during term time I missed the ‘short talk’ and grading on participation. In order to amend this, I will only be going home out of term time, unless exceptional circumstances arise. During future seminars I hope to get involved in class discussions, as I feel this will further develop my knowledge and understanding and help me achieve high grades in coursework and exams. In regards to my part time job, working at a busy city centre bar I often do not get in from work till the early hours of the next day, and so I have cut down my hours to just two weekend nights. I feel that by doing so It will enable me to study during the week, and take the time I need to do further reading around the subjects and get a head on any coursework. To help me further, I have invested in a diary and also devised a timetable, this consists of each module I am studying for the semester, reading that needs to be......
