The Doctor Will Sue You Now
This chapter did not appear in the original edition of this book, because for fifteen months leading up to September 2008 the vitamin-pill entrepreneur Matthias Rath was suing me personally, and the Guardian, for libel. This strategy brought only mixed success. For all that nutritionists may fantasise in public that any critic is somehow a pawn of big pharma, in private they would do well to remember that, like many my age who work in the public sector, I don’t own a flat. The Guardian generously paid for the lawyers, and in September 2008 Rath dropped his case, which had cost in excess of £500,000 to defend. Rath has paid £220,000 already, and the rest will hopefully follow. Nobody will ever repay me for the endless meetings, the time off work, or the days spent poring over tables filled with endlessly cross-referenced court documents. On this last point there is, however, one small consolation, and I will spell it out as a cautionary tale: I now know more about Matthias Rath than almost any other person alive. My notes, references and witness statements, boxed up in the room where I am sitting right now, make a pile as tall as the man himself, and what I will write here is only…...

Financial Statement/Audit Report Review

...Assignment: Audit Report Review By Eleanor P. Luu Professor Joetta Malone Course Title ACC 410006VA016-1126-0010 July 27, 2012 In my review, I found the financial statements for the City of Galax. They are located near Roanoke, Virginia and they have three separate financial statements that are provided for their three different funds, not counting their General Fund. They have their Governmental Fund, their Proprietary Fund and their Fiduciary Fund. The amazing thing in reviewing their financial statements is that they follow the guidelines that have been established by GAASB. The GASB “was formed in 1984 to give public sector entities guidance for recording their financial transactions. For smaller towns or cities, the basic guidance is that they use cash basis accounting for their activities. For larger towns or cities, the basic guidance is that they must use accrual accounting as their method. The City of Galax uses both and actually even a combination of the two. The government-wide financials and the proprietary funds financial statements are reported using the economic resources measurement focus and the accrual basis of accounting. Revenues are recorded when earned and expenses are recorded when a liability is incurred, regardless of the timing of related cash flows. Property taxes are recognized as revenues in the year for which they are levied....

Article Review of ‘Distorted Retrospective Eyewitness Reports

...Length: 546 words (1.6 double-spaced pages) Experimental Psychology Article review of ‘Distorted Retrospective Eyewitness Reports as Functions of Feedback and Delay’ by Gary L. Wells, Elizabeth A. Olson, and Steve D. Charman. Iowa State University Journal of Experimental Psychology This article was mainly about eye witnesses and the many errors they make in recalling a situation or describing a culprit whether they are asked immediately or after a period of time. In this study, witnesses viewed a crime video and attempted to identify the culprit from a group line-up that did not actually have the culprit present. 253 mistaken-identification eyewitnesses were randomly given confirming, disconfirming, or no feedback regarding their description of the culprit or the culprit’s identification. The feedback process was either immediate or delayed for 48 hours, and measures were also immediate or delayed for 48 hours. It was shown that those who were given confirming feedback gave more distorted information. They had increased confidence in remembering what had happened, were able to make out facial details and their length of time to identify the culprit changed. There was also no difference in their statements when they were asked immediately or after 48 hours. Those who received disconfirming feedback were not so confident and took longer time to identify the culprit. The writers argue that the focus on identification itself, especially in court cases,......

The Report on Tpi Judicial Review

...REPORT ON JUDICIAL REVIEW Of BANKRUPTCY LAWSUIT OF PT TELEVISI PENDIDIKAN INDONESIA (TPI) By: FABIANUS PRIJO SAMBODO 2013 BUSINESS LAW & ETHICS – LEGAL BANKRUPTCY ANALYSIS BACKGROUND Bankruptcy is a legal status of a person or organization that cannot repay their debts to creditors. In most jurisdictions, bankruptcy is imposed by a court order, often initiated by the creditor. Bankruptcy is not the only legal status that an insolvent person or organization may have, and the term bankruptcy is therefore not a synonym for insolvency. Bankruptcy lawsuit sometimes happens to many companies, when they can not pay their overdue debt or can not re-structure their liabilities to at least two of their debitor. In Indonesia, there are many of bankruptcy lawsuits, and one of the interesting bankruptcy cases happened at PT. Cipta Televisi Indonesia that ussualy known as a company who owned the Indonesian Educational Television (TPI). Bankruptcy as a means of debt settlement certainly has some direct and indirect effects on all parties that have an interest in the assets of the debtor declared bankrupt. Generally, if the debtor is a legal entity, the interests of the debtor, creditor and shareholders will be affected. For example, the declaration of bankruptcy by a company will negatively affect its shareholders' position in the liquidation process. Pursuant to Indonesia's Private Law, secured, preferred and unsecured creditors have different privileges against the assets of the......

...Higher Level History Notes 19th Century Russia The Russian people are descendants of the ‘Rus’ who are thought to be a mixture of Scandinavian and Slavic origin and settled in that region out of ± 800 AD Byzantine Empire A major legacy of the Byzantine Empire for the Russians was the eastern orthodox or Greek Orthodox Church With the decline of Byzantium came a wave of conquest from the East, the Mongols until the 15th century (Tatars). To a large extent, the Mongols allowed Russians to maintain their way of life: - Slavic based languages including writing system (Cyrillic) - Orthodox religion The Russians adopted much from Asian culture and this led western Europeans to think less of the Russians Geographically Russia was isolated from the rest of Europe: - Entirely land locked (mostly) - Huge Plains of Eastern Europe prevented overland travel During these early years there were a series of muscovite princes based in Moscow and called themselves Tsars. By the 17th century the Romanov family became the ruling dynasty: - Alexander I (1801-1825) - Nicholas I (1825-1855) - Alexander II (1855-1881) - Alexander III (1881-1894) - Nicholas II (1894-1917) Under the rule of Peter the Great (1689-1728) Russia grew greatly in size and entered the European World The Russia of 1800 was one of the greatest autocracies in Europe where: - The Tsar’s rule was absolute - There was a small...
