Essay #1: Saying “I Do” What’s the first thing that pops into your head when you think “marriage”? Do you smell a home cooked meal waiting on the table, after a long-hard day at work? Do you picture a beautiful home with a white picket fence? Maybe you think about a gorgeous white dress, that was altered to fit you just right. Or maybe it’s not white at all because your favorite color is black, and you refuse to be cliché on what’s supposed to be the most important day of your life. Maybe you see half of everything you own being taken out from under you if this whole “marriage thing” goes south, and that’s just not a chance you’re willing to take. Maybe the thought of being committed to one person for the rest of your life frightens you, and all of a sudden that beautiful woman standing next you is looking more like a prison warden, rather than your future wife. Whatever your views or opinions on marriage may be one things for certain; no one ever walked down the aisle, said their vows, and pledged before God and everyone most precious to them expecting to fail.

Marriage was not always based on the idea of two people falling in love and wanting to spend the rest of their lives together. In the 1800’s marriage was not just regarded as the joining of two people, but the joining of families, businesses, and wealth. Many women had suitors pre-arranged for them by their fathers. Although most marriages were based on the idea of security and companionship, that doesn’t mean that love did not exist in marriage. Once married, it was very difficult for a woman to divorce. The Matrimonial Act of 1857 gave men the right to divorce their wives on the grounds of adultery. However, there was no such act granting women that same right. Once divorced, the husband would automatically gain custody of the…...

Stuff I Do for Fun

...To be honest I don't really know what to say. I'm just writing this essay to become a member of this website. But if I need to write an essay then so be it. People do different things for fun, and so do I. I may not be too different but the things I like aren't in the same taste as everyone else. For one thing, I enjoy video games a little too much. Believe it or not I can play video games literally all day long. I've been grounded for obsessive gameplay. But that's something I love to do for fun. And again, not everybody is the same, not everyone is not like me. Games I like to play are mostly action; fast paced action. But I also enjoy the good old adventure game or role playing game. With action games it's usually the typical ones like Call of Duty and Darksiders 2. But a good game I will never get tired of is The Legend of Zelda. Another thing I do for fun is read. This is usually a back up for my playing video games. When I say that I mean if I am grounded or nowhere near any video games, I enjoy my time with a good book. I'm a guy and most people find this feminine but I enjoy reading a good romantic novel every once in awhile, but I usually go for science fiction or fantasy fiction. But for me the book always has to have a little bit of drama in it or else I can't read it. Novel series that I read and really enjoyed would be The Vampire Diaries, Harry Potter, and Eragon. One thing that I prefer to do over everything else is to......

I Am Sayings of Jesus Christ

...I Am Sayings Paper BIBL 323 B12 The Gospel of John Liberty University Abstract Jesus Christ was the most influential and the most controversial of all God’s teachers and prophets. His time spent discussing His deity by use of metaphors such as the I AM sayings lead the Pharisees to believe less in Him as the messiah, and more in him as being crazy. To understand Jesus’s claim to be the good shepherd, it is important to review the evidence of the claim compare it to the Old Testament which points toward Christ and apply the finds to the claims of Jesus’ deity.  Jesus the Good Shepherd John wrote his Gospel of Jesus Christ for two reasons. The first reason was to communicate the message of Christ by providing examples of His miracles and his teaching in order to generate belief in the unbeliever that Jesus was who he said he was: the Son of God (Towns, 2002). The second reason was that those who then believed would have eternal life because of the faith that Jesus Christ was truly the fulfillment of the Messianic prophesies as Savior and Lord (Ibid). Jesus’ teaching style was not always easy to understand, and often created dissention between those who believed, and those who did not. He lessons linked who He was to prophesy about Him made by Old Testament prophets. In John’s Gospel there are eight lessons that are known as the “I Am” sayings that exemplify this teaching style by linking Him to well-known images and symbols provided in the Old......

I Do Not Have One

...properly prepare without getting overwhelmed. To start, I would explain that this involves three different phases: the run, swim, and bike. So they will be working different muscle groups for each activity and that they are all big muscle groups of the body. Instead of looking at the big picture I would have them break it down and focus on small goals. Some smaller goals to start with would be start running two-three days a week for about 1-2 miles. Once comfortable with that register for a 5K run. After that set a goal for a 10K run. While including the runs I would also incorporate strength training and maybe suggest they meet with a trainer once or twice a week for 30 minutes to work on strength making sure the trainer knows what they are training for so they can work the proper muscle groups. I would also suggest maybe a cycling class as biking can be somewhat lonely. Again, I would start small and celebrate the small accomplishments, then move on to the next goal. I would have them write it all down on separate pieces of paper so that they are only concentrating on one goal at a time. For example, the first piece could be: run 2-3 miles 2 days/week, strength train once a day and cycle once a week for the first week increasing intensity as needed. Next I would suggest that they maybe try and do this with a friend or family member. That way they have a support group not only behind them but with them. Also, if they do sign with a personal trainer they will......

I Am Sayings of Jesus Christ

...“I Am” A Paper Presented to Dr. Jason Hilgeman Of Liberty University Lynchburg, VA In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for John BIBL 323 By: Keith D. Lewis March 8, 2013 The seven “I AM” sayings are a signature of John’s gospel. They are quick to the tongue of many Christians when defending a variety of doctrines. Indeed, the “I AM” sayings alone can almost summarize Jesus’ teachings about his own deity and nature. Of particular interest is the saying found in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. Nobody gets to the father except through me.” This paper will be concerned with this saying, and explore the events surrounding it, its relation to God’s revelation of himself in the Bible, and its significance to Christ’s deity. The back drop of this saying is the upper room discourse. Jesus has called all the disciples together so that he may share a last meal with them and give them his last parting directions before he dies. He has washed the disciple’s feet, implicitly announced the man who will betray him, and has foretold Peter’s denial. He has also given his “New Commandment” in 13:34: “A new commandment I give you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” This I AM saying is in the middle of Jesus’ discourse. It was provoked by a question from Thomas. Jesus had just explained the he was going to “prepare a place” for them (14:3), and further revealed to the disciples, “and you know the......

Why Do I Read

...I have to admit that I am not as prolific of a reader as I used to be. My current reading mainly consists of reading news and science articles from the internet, and occasional bed time stories with my son. I enjoy reading news rather than watch or listen to news, mainly because it allows me to gather and analyze information from various sources without the filter or the bias of television or radio networks news anchors. In addition to news and various articles I prefer to read short stories. My fascination with short stories began at around age 12 or 13. At the time, since access to television in Iran was very limited. We had to entertain ourselves and being a mischievous child I spent a lot of time in my room (being punished) either listening to radio or reading. My favorite books at the time were horror books. I remember buying these paperback books and reading them cover to cover in two or three days and be scared out of my wits for a few days. I recall at the end of some of these books were teasers about the next story that was due to arrive next. However, at the end of one of the books there was a short story by Edgar Allan Poe titled “The Cask of Amontillado”, I read that story several times and every time I found something new that I Had missed previously. That was the reason I got interested in short stories. My fascination with short stories always have been with a given writers ability to develop main characters, , story plot, and a that in novels might take......

Lord, Do I Stank?

...Catchy title, right? Nevertheless, it is still a question every born again believer should ask. “Lord, do I stank of corruption, murder (hate or dislike), selfishness, or stubbornness?” Stank, in the Urban Dictionary, means : Showing no shame in your lack of regard for things that are proper.  Showing distaste for things that show respect for an individual or groups of individuals. Bowing to the prevailing peer pressure of being: a. callous  b. mean-spirited  c. emotionally distant and unavailable  d. mentally dull  e. sexually promiscuous  f. concerned that someone is "hating" on you 4. Lacking accountability and giving props to people who also shun and reject being accountable for their misgivings. So, how does your offering of praise smell to God? Is God smelling those hidden secrets and/or sins each and every time you lift up your hands? Does He smell the sweet fragrance of myrrh and cinnamon, or do you stank of lies and manipulation? Get out of yourself and step into the spirit (the truth) and ask yourself, “WHAT IS GOD SMELLING ON ME?” Does God favor your smell of love and truth, or does He turn His face from the smell of hatred and greed? What kinds of smells permeate the atmosphere when you lift up an offering of praise? Are your prayers and supplications always self-edifying, or are you interceding for your loved ones, frenemies and enemies? Where does your true allegiance lie? Are you doing the work of the devil and masking it as the work of......

Saying Britons 'Don't Do' Languages Is a Fallacy Analysis

... Give an outline of the different views on the state of foreign language learning in Britain presented in the texts. The 3 viewpoints are very different. The authors are argueing, based on their individual experiences. Will Hutton, is the principal of Hertford College and he writes about the negative sides, of only learning English. David Hughes is more concentrated on he's experiences in Asia, where he experienced native asians speaking English to each other. Susan Purcell takes the Brits in defence and tries to explain the source of the bad statistics. How does Susan Purcell argue for her views in thext 3? Give examples from the text. Susan Purcell is defending the British people. The headline of her article, “Saying Britons 'don't do' languages is a fallacy”,describes her point of view. She writes that companies in England complain about the workers not being very strong in their language skills. She is convinced, that when they talk about language skills, it is not foreing languages they are complaining about, it is English[1]. When people talk about the neighbours of the Britons are much stronger in their language, it is about how good they are at English. English is the a mandatory language in 13 EU countries. Even in countries where it is not mandatory, kids tend to choose it anyways. [2] She writes that the statistics that are brought up, can't be used for much. She thinks that the School League Tables, have been blamed for the lack of language been......

“Am I a Product of My Past or Do I Have a Choice in What I Do? Why Do I Do What I Do?”

...I believe that our environment can inhibit our options, but the choices we make can enhance our experience within the environment we have been placed in. In my stance on the question at hand I would like to present my take on Skinner’s ideas that, “It is the environment which is responsible for objectionable behavior, and it is the environment, not some attribute of the individual, which must be changed.” and, “A person does not act upon the world, the world acts upon him.” I understand Skinner’s view point, however, I differ from his ideas in three ways: first, we are products of the choices we have made in the past; secondly, our physical environment can be changed by us; and third, our mental environment is influenced by authorities, but not controlled. In the following paragraphs I will use observational learning, instinctive drift, and behavior modification to explain each of my personal views pertaining to the question, “Why do I do what I do?” I have lived in Southwest Kansas my entire life because my parents chose to start their lives here; therefore I am a product of the choice my parents made for me seventeen years ago pertaining to where I live. However, like any environment there are ecological factors to consider such as weather, wildlife, and resources. For example, let’s say I had only previously encountered garter snakes and bullsnakes and had had positive experiences with both, and my parents had never told me to fear snakes. Then one day I encounter...

Before I Say I Do

...The phrase 'i do' seem to be misunderstood by many, some feel its only connected to relationship, but unknown to them that is wrong, because in life we daily make decisions that are either wrong or right. Am not saying marriage is excluded but my pioint is that it is not just about you getting hooked to someone but it concerns your entire lfe . In life we make lot od decisions. Some make them out of fear and anxiety, some out of circumstances surrounding them, some out of familys advice or even friends etc. While some make decisions actually from the lords counsel, persnal view and so many too numerous to mention. Therefore i saw it important to write on this subject matter i tittled 'BEFORE I SAY I DO'. What are the thoughts that flies through our mind when we are about to make decisions, do we really seek the lords idea or we just heard some fake voice from friends, family members or even our personal view and ooops we take the bold step. And when we fail we either feel depress or put the blame on whoever gave us their opinion. This accusation could be eliminated only if we obey some vital principles am about to list down which will be able to lead us into our desire, sustain us there and make us avoid mistakes as we go on with our lives. What Should I Do?

...What Should I Do? First off I would begin to reassure Kim that I understand that she has never been through a planning process before, so there’s no need for her to panic. I would then explain to her that the departmental plan is merely a written explanation on how to accomplish and to achieve the objectives discussed and agreed upon in last month’s meeting. I would then begin to tell her to utilize and incorporate her expertise of her 7 years as a sales specialist. She should deal directly with the warehouse clerks and get a printout of what time of the month or year sales is at its peak. I would first suggest that she juts down the specifics on what takes place daily in her department, and also I would suggest that other associates in that department compile the same thing and submit them to Kim. That way she will get the gist of what everyone in her department does and everyone would then be in agreement with that objective. Kim should also seek the previous manager for advice and expert advice if at all possible. I think that Kim’s initial reaction to the planning process is a usual one. Everyone if put into a new position would get cold feet. Even if you have had experience in and with a company for years, your new roll and what is expected in a promotion is new. No one knows what to expect until trained and it is okay to ask questions. Until she becomes familiar with what is expected of her, any new task will seem overwhelming, until she gets the hang of it....

...meaning to his own life. First, Nurse Ratched’s manipulation and subtle cruelty mirrors discrimination of the era. In One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the chief Bromden and the patients who are there are essentially being "segregated" from the rest of society because they are different. This segregation from the normal life can compare to the struggle with racism, discrimination, and segregation between whites and African Americans in post-World War II era. In the book, the patients are not treated as normal people, and they do not have freedom. For example, Nurse Ratched “helps” the patients to manage their times, “Everybody stops playing cards and Monopoly, turns toward the day-room door” (Kesey 15). The lives of people who live in the mental institution are same as those who live in prison, because the patients do not have the freedom to do what they want to do. Instead, they have to listen to the nurse’s commands. Ratched convinces the patients by saying, “I tell you this hoping you will understand that it is entirely for your own good that we enforce discipline and order” (Kesey 171). There were a few notable experiments that occurred during the 1950s American society. One of them was the syphilis treatment experiment. Black men were recruited to test a new treatment for syphilis. But they only treated a portion of the participants, and didn't tell the others that they would go untreated. Those untreated thought that they were receiving treatment. The hospital staff......
