Student Survival Guide

Going to school online is one of the most exciting adventures you will ever go on. Knowing that the end result will provide better for yourself and your family will be worth all the work you put into your degree. You can’t get discouraged when you get stuck on an assignment; take a deep breath and keep pushing forward. There are a few things you are going to want to keep at the back of your mind in case you feel like giving up. You have been given some tools that you will utilize throughout your time in college and now you have a reference guide to help you. Using your general internet skills you know that when you research on the internet there are a few different things that you need to look for in terms of reliable sources for your papers. Looking for websites that end in “.EDU,” “.GOV,” and “.ORG,” is going to be the most useful for research as they typically will provide facts rather than an opinion of an author. Since blogs are typically the writer’s opinion, they may not be considered reliable sources unless they are backed up with facts of their own. While these websites can give you some ideas of where to look for reliable sources, weeding through all the opinions is time consuming and not usually worth all the work. When you are researching for a paper and looking for reliable sources, remember, CARS: Credibility, Accuracy, Reasonableness and Support. You also learned the importance of tone in online writing. Keeping a professional tone to your writing in class forums and assignments is going to be worth more points than using laid back slang on a term paper. It also shows a lack of enthusiasm to learn new things and close mindedness to new ideas. You want to use a different tone in your school forum than you do on your social websites, there is always a chance that the reader is going to misinterpret your meaning and…...

...Writing academic papers or just your normal day to day school work can be very intimidating at times. As long as I have the determination and the drive to succeed, conquering these obstacles will be a relatively easy task. Unlike traditional college where you go in and sit in a class and have months before you finish, online schooling is much more demanding. It requires that you have the motivation to complete your work on time and learn the material that is presented in front of you. A lot of knowledge can be carried on from one’s high school experience but like many people, polishing up those skills you learned years back is much needed. What I hope to accomplish with my survival guide is to develop much needed strategies that will help me in my studies in college. Conducting research for academic papers or even discussion questions is not just an option but a requirement. There are many ways to conduct research and with all these sources at your fingertips. Because of the many sources the task can seem overwhelming at times. One powerful tool at everyone’s disposal is the internet. This is a very valuable tool because there is a wealth of information available. Be warned because not all the information on the internet is creditable. A good way to get accurate information is to cross reference several sites and exempt information that is not correct. Another way to conduct research is through the University Library. Much like a search engine on the internet, the......

...Student Survival Guide Gen 105 August 26, 2012 Student Survival Guide I recently have learned that I have more transferrable credits than I initially thought. This means that I will be moving on from the associates program to my Bachelor’s program sooner than I expected. My classes will be shorter, and the learning will be accelerated. In order to survive the next two years, I have created a Student Survival Guide that I will use to navigate successfully through my Bachelor’s program. The following tips and practices are listed in the order that I deem important to survive my Bachelor’s program. Before I can get started on my Bachelor’s, I need to re-establish my short-term and long-term goals. I have three short-term goals that can be completed roughly within the next two years. First, I will complete each course in my program to the best of my ability to achieve the highest grade possible. Second, when I have completed all my courses successfully I will receive my Bachelor’s Degree. My last short-term goal is to find an entry-level position in my field and begin gaining experience. I have three long-term goals. My first long-term goal is to go back to college while I am working and get my Master’s degree. This may be difficult, since I will be working and raising a family while going back to school but I believe it can be achievable if I stick to a strict schedule. My second long-term goal is to complete my internship. My third long-term goal is to pass...

...Survival Guide Let’s Get Started On the first day of classes with Axia College, it is important to login and download the course materials and syllabus. I have found that by making folders under My Documents labeled first with the course name, and then inside have folders labeled each week 1-9 where I save the relevant materials for the weeks work. After downloading the files to the appropriate files, it is best to break up the syllabus. I like to copy and paste each week of the syllabus to a word document filed again under the corresponding week. This makes it easy to access what is needed for the week. It is also important to download the course calendar to keep a closer watch on when assignments are due. By looking at the course calendar at the beginning of each week you will be able to manage your assignments accordingly. After reading through the course syllabus and downloading course materials the next step is to check the main forum. The main forum is where your instructor posts information about what changes may be made for the week and also posts the weekly discussion questions for you to answer. In the main forum only the instructor will post topics. This is the area in which we as students post replies to the teacher and also our classmates. These posts are the only ones that apply to your weekly participation grade. It is very......

Survival Guide

...HI, my name is Krystal Mccree. I’m doing a survival guide for college. At the University of Phoenix, time management and turning in assignments is very important. The instructors here make sure that you are ready for this educational ride. I will develop an action plan to follow so I can successfully complete my degree program. Your personality is considered when taking courses at the University of Phoenix. It’s used to help you choose you’re major wisely. Just to make sure you’re not wasting time and money, I recommend the personality spectrum is taken. When I took the personality spectrum, I found out that I was in the wrong field. My results showed me that I belong in the criminal Justice field. I’m not interested in Criminal Justice; the healthcare field has my heart. In college, you will be involved with different people. Interacting with your classmates can be very helpful. It’s good to get into groups to learn about others differences; it helps you to gain strength in weak areas. You have to be open to try new things. You can become more successful and intelligent. It can be challenging relating to others. You can learn new skills and obtain information. Value your social skills and apply them into your everyday life. Knowing the basics of searching the internet is very vital. You have to know how to navigate the internet to ensure you’re searching that source correctly. When using the internet for academic purposes, it’s important to look at all search......

Masters Student Survival Guide

...Masters Student Survival Guide Mary Hill COM/516 March 1, 2015 John Smith, Ph.D. Masters Student Survival Guide Every graduate level student including myself needs to stock their arsenal with as many weapons of intellect as we can work-ably acquire. Few skills are more important than our ability to communicate our thoughts in writing, collaborate with our peers, and the sheer will to preserver through the most stressful of conditions. Even if those conditions were aggravated by lingering bad habits developed in undergrad course work. With enough effort and practice in these key areas we should not only secure the tools need to survive a graduate program, but to succeed in our career of choice that follows. Communication By developing written communication skills that we will not only succeed in in our master’s courses but will carry over into our teaching careers (Russ, 2009). The element of communication is vital in our studies because it will demonstrate to our professors that we can follow instructions by adhering to rigorous school guidelines and develop lesson plans that will challenge our future students. Graduate level writing is held to a higher standard because the content must address the real life scenarios pertaining to current topics in our field and also follow the strict framework of APA rules. Unlike emails and letters where formatting is subjective and errors may go unnoticed, graduate students papers will need to be......

Students Survival Guide

...Student’s Survival Guide Brandie Bowland Axia College GEN105 July 12, 2009 So I am coming to the end of the 9 weeks of my first two classes. When I first decided to take on going back to school I was thinking to myself “What have I just gotten myself into?” Then came my first day and I was thinking “I hope that I am not in over my head!” Turns out that it wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be. This class made it very easy to learn how to access the resources that are available to me as a student at Axia College. I am writing this survival guide as a resource for me to look back on in the future. Some of the things that were covered in this course that will be of use to my personal action plans are: using Axia’s educational resources, upholding academic honesty, setting and achieving goals, managing time wisely, reading comprehension and retention skills, and applying personality and learning styles. I am going to talk about each one of these topics in this “survival guide”. The first topic that I am going to talk about before I start talking about what I listed above is that because this is all done online it is considered distance learning. It is a lot different than going in to a class and sitting down in front of a teacher and listening to lectures. It does take a little more effort to succeed in distance but once you get the hang of it, it is all uphill from there. Plus, if you are going through a good college then all you could possibly need...

...Christopher J Sforza Gen.105 7/9/11 Student Survival Guide This general class has got to be one of the most helpful classes that I have ever taken in any schooling that I have been in. The way the techniques are brought about make it for such a much easier way to study, or to get a good comprehension on the material. For these 9 weeks I have used the majority of these techniques for both of my classes, and I would have to say it has really helped me study, and strive for good grades. The educational resources that are offered here on the Axia website are incredible. I have never been more impressed with how easy it is to locate and access everything. I was at a state university before this online journey, and the library and resources were so much harder to use and did not provide as many resources. When having to use the audio appendixes I would download them to my computer than transfer them to my cell phone. I would be able to listen to them anywhere I was, even while I was driving with my aux hookup from my phone to the car speakers. This program give you the tools you need to succeed, you just have to be smart enough to use them and not waste them. Alone, the library has so many different tools it is hard to use them all during the course of a class. To have all this information right in front of you on one website makes it 10 times easier than having to go to your local library. I still stick to the basic knowledge I learned in high school when it comes to doing......

...Survival Guide Melvin Cummings Survival Guide My survival through this program is vital for me accomplishing my goals. I know that there are challenges to come my way, but with all of the resources I have to assist me. There is no way that I can not accomplish my goals to graduate. This is why my first action plan is making sure I am using Axia Colleges Educational Resources. The Centers for Writing Excellence has got to be one of the best sources of help that you can find. When I have papers to write, I run them through write point and plagiarism Checker. I write all of my work now through River point Writer which helps by setting all the tabs and fonts and things that line up to the institutions standard. Writing is not my strongest subject so these tools are there to be used. There is also The Center for Mathematics. This is not a particularly fun class for me either so from time to time, I go through some of the lesson drills to sharpen my skills and help me to remember basic fundamentals in working out problems about once a week. I use The Research Center for all my research papers that I dig up information for. The large assortment of Encyclopedias gives me all I am looking for in history. My next phase in my Survival is to always remain honest. Upholding Academic Honesty has to be the cornerstone of who you are. ...Using Educational Resources All schools have tools set up to assist their students throughout their academic careers. I am taking every opportunity I have available to take advantage of these tools. The student workshops and labs for just about every subject that the school is offering was very beneficial to me. I have already participated in eight workshops and have found more to coincide with my courses. Through the university library I am finding things that have come in handy on every assignment. The Center for Writing Excellence has a section that helps me check for plagiarism on my papers and WritePoint checks the grammar of my papers before I turn them in. I have been provided with valuable material that I can download on to my computer for easy access. All of these resources are things that every student should become familiar with. Upholding Academic Honesty Upholding academic honesty basically means I will not cheat. This will be the key to my success as a student. All learning facilities need to know that their students are turning in their own work. Cheating to me, is a big waste of time, space, and money for all of the people involved (student, instructors, and the school). It does not make sense financially (especially) to take out all of the loans to attend school and learn nothing. When cheating, you learn nothing because you are not the one diving into the information and soaking up all of the knowledge. To uphold academic honesty, I......
