Students & Hearing Impairment Humans are fortunate to have 5 physical senses and also have the knowledge to use and verbally express our perceptions about our environment using each one. Of course we know these to be taste, smell, touch, see, and hear. From the moment we wake up until the moment we fall asleep, we use each of these senses. Some of these senses are considered more vital than the others. But, with these senses, we are capable of living in this on-the-go, ease-of-access society. Every day we have an agenda whether it is work, school, children, or even just to lounge and be a couch potato. Each of those tasks requires our senses. What happens to a person when one sense or even multiple senses become impaired or is extinguished? We all love to feel the rain on our skin, smell the fresh forest air, taste great home cooking, and see the newborn baby first open their eyes. But, what if you’re crossing the street and you can’t hear the drunk driver and the sirens turning the corner behind you? What do you do when you’re struggling to hear your teacher’s very important review about your final? What happens if you were living in New York City, sitting in your apartment, and you couldn’t hear the bombs collide with the World Trade Center? People who are deaf or hearing impaired are very unfortunate in these situations and have to exert more effort to cope with their everyday life. Hearing loss makes even routine communication difficult. (“Slowik”) Students, especially, notice the difficulties. Medically, Hearing Impairment is considered a disability. As a hearing impaired student and speaking as a deaf community member, it is not a disability it is a difference. While on campus attending your classes you face a variety of problems. People who lose the ability to hear high frequency are usually suffering from an impairment of the inner ear. Emily can act on her hearing loss by getting a Cochlear Implants. Its job is to bypass hair cells and stimulate the auditory nerves directly. I think that this will help Emily because if the auditory nerved is intact, it is possible for Emily to still hear and will not be forced into deep anxiety. ...Hearing Loss Hearing loss has always been an interesting topic to me. Before I was born my father damaged his hearing from listening to music too loud in college and loud noises in general. He wears hearing aids to help him hear everything from his students talking at school to the television at home. I use to ride to his audiologist appointments with him all the time because I thought the process of testing his hearing and the process of making and adjusting his hearing aids was so interesting and exciting. That is why I chose hearing loss as my topic. Hearing loss is defined by Farlex as; any degree of impairment of the ability to hear sound (Farlex, 2013). In other words if you cannot hear whispering or if you cannot hear fireworks you have some sort of hearing loss. “About 26 million Americans between the ages of 20 and 69 have high frequency hearing loss due to exposure to loud noises at work or in leisure activities” (Disorders, 2013). There are three different types of hearing loss and different severities. There is conductive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss, and mixed Hearing loss. Dr. Michael P. Robb defines conductive hearing loss as; hearing loss due to problems affecting sound transmission through the outer or middle ear (Robb, 2010). In other words, if you have a problem with your outer or middle ear, such as an obstruction of the ear canal, or otitis externa, (swimmers ear), you would have conductive hearing loss. Choosing Oralism or Deaf Culture for a Hearing-Disabled Child of Hearing Parents

Deafness as defined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), means “ a hearing impairment that is so severe that the child is impaired in processing linguistic information through hearing, with or without amplification, that adversely affects a child's educational performance” (34 Code of Federal Regulations [section]300.8[c][3] [2013]). Parents can choose to either communicate with the child in English, the major language of society, or teach the child manual language such as ASL and become a part of the Deaf culture. This decision is especially hard for parents to make who were never exposed to the non-hearing world before, and see deafness as a medical problem that needs to be fixed. This can become critical for the child’s future years and development as a person in the society since the child will always be viewed and judged as different. It is mandated that each child with a disability will be viewed individually to make the best decision in how to treat and help the child. The oral approach, audism, is a method in which children learn to use whatever residual hearing they have, in combination with lip-reading and contextual cues. The children will also thus use an auditory approach, in which they receive amplification devices to correct their hearing and to make use of the residual hearing they have as much as possible. The concept of impairment does not really apply to trading securities as they are only held for short periods. The impairment of securities that are deemed available for sale or held to maturity is a three step process. The first step is to determine if the security is impaired by comparing the fair value to the cost of the security. The cost includes any amortization and any previous impairments. The second step is to determine if the loss is temporary or “other than temporary”. This is the step that can cause the most controversy in the impairment process. It is supposed to be based on the time and extent of the loss, the issuers financial standing, and the intent and ability of the holder. Individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing are unfortunate to have quality communication with others. There is a barrier-dividing people who are deaf from hearing people. Just like hearing people, the deaf like to talk with others; Conversations can be difficult for them, especially if they are trying to communicate with individuals who are not familiar with the Deaf community or sigh language. Experiencing what deaf people have to go through every single day in their lives was not easy to practice. Wearing earplugs for eight hours was a new experience that I learned a lot from. The way I started interacting with people around me was not the same, as well the way they acted towards me.
