Using a combination of statistical evidence, anecdotes, and case studies, Annie Leonard walks us through the world we are living in in terms of consumption. She breaks the cycle of consumption down into five parts and devotes a chapter of the book to each: extraction, production, distribution, consumption, and disposal. Each section of the book tells of the environmental and health dangers of our current practices. While Leonard does try to tell us about the good things that are going on in each chapter and includes promising laws and possible helpful individual actions in appendices, the overall tone of the book is dark. ...Valued Possessions vs. Insignificant Desires Anna Quindlen, a novelist, social critic, and journalist wrote an intriguing essay “Stuff is Not Salvation” about the addiction of Americans, who splurge on materialistic items that have no real meaning. The ability to obtain credit is one of the main reasons to blame for society’s consumption epidemic. However, Quindlen feels the economic decline due to credit card debt is insignificant compared to the underlying issues of American’s binging problems. Quindlen’s essay gives excellent points regarding the differences in America’s typical shopping habits. Additionally, she mentions how people acquire all this “stuff” but seem to never realize, “why did I get this?”(501). Quindlen makes her audience visualize a world where we acquire our needs versus our meaningless desires. Yet, she fails to mention people who could live a life of happiness through the possessions they acquire. In summary, Quindlen supports her point of view with examples of American spending habits in the past decades of depression compared to now. ...The Right Stuff No two people are the same. Everyone has their own dreams and aspirations, strengths and weaknesses, fears and dreams. What can motivate one person may not appeal to the next, and vice versa. Imagine coaching a high school basketball team. Each member has a position and is responsible for certain tasks, like setting up the offense, rebounding, setting picks, etc. To get the team to practice and play hard, and to execute the game plan, the coach has to motivate the team. Although they may all have the same goal of winning, their motivation can be as varied as the personalities. Some of the players may be playing to attract college scouts in order to earn scholarships for college, others may be motivated by the prestige or popularity that being on the team brings, or they simply love the sport and want to play it as much as they can. Whatever the motivation, the coach has to be aware of each player and what drives them to keep them motivated to put forth their best effort on the court. This awareness of his players will determine the type of game plan the coach implements, using his team’s strengths to the fullest. Not all coaches utilize the same methods to motivate their players. For example, when Phil Jackson was an NBA coach, he was called “The Zen Master” because he uses a cerebral approach to coaching. When people ask what is needed to accomplish an impossible task, or achieve a goal that seems outside the grasp of human power, it is often said that the person who achieves that feat has “The Right Stuff.” This is not some item you can pick up in a store, or that is taught at an Ivy League college. “The Right Stuff” is the intestinal fortitude required to drive on and persevere far after it is said it is no possible. Since the dawn of time it has been wondered if it takes a person of almost god-like proportions to achieve impossible feats, or someone just crazy enough to try. I most cases this is really nothing more that a person with such drive and desire to prove their point they are willing to risk everything including their lives to make something happen. To properly categorize this concept of “The Right Stuff”, we must look at what has been done in its name. Weather it be BG Chuck Yeager breaking the sound barrier in the Bell X-1, or the pioneers of the space program in the Mercury and Apollo space programs; one thing holds true they indeed has something that others did not, guts. When the word guts are used it is usually compared to a skateboarder or freestyle motocross rider doing something crazy and dangerous. ...The Right Stuff Many careers require a special type of person to perform. Other careers require not just for a special person, but a person that can go above and beyond what are considered the normal standards just to not get left behind. This beyond special type of person is considered to have the right stuff. The right stuff is a difficult term to categorize. The right stuff can be physical or it can be mental or it can be anything in between. To be part of the elite some of the qualities of a person that has the right stuff are physical fitness, mental attitude and high ethics. There is no doubt however; to be part of the elite one must have the right stuff. In the military, especially in the special operation forces, physical fitness is not just something you can work up to. Physical fitness in the sense of physical talent is necessary. Having the ability to swim ten thousand meters is something which can be worked up to but being able to swim ten thousand meters while being timed is a different story. Physical fitness is important; being left behind is not an option. Being left behind in the arena of Special Forces can mean certain death to the individual that does not have the right stuff. Hand in hand with physical fitness is mental attitude. Without the proper mental attitude the proper level of physical fitness cannot be met.
