Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.

athematics is a unique subject that is essential for describing, or modeling, events in the real world. For example, ultraviolet light from the sun is responsible for both tanning and burning exposed skin. Mathematics lets us use numbers to describe the intensity of ultraviolet light. The table shows the maximum ultraviolet intensity measured in milliwatts per square meter for various latitudes and dates. Latitude 0 10 20 30 40 50 Mar. 21 325 311 249 179 99 57 June 21 254 275 292 248 199 143 Sept. 21 325 280 256 182 127 75 Dec. 21 272 220 143 80 34 13

If a student from Chicago, located at a latitude of 42°, spends spring break in Hawaii with a latitude of 20°, the sun’s ultraviolet rays in Hawaii will be approximately 249 2.5 99 times as intense as they are in Chicago. Equations can be used to describe, or model, the intensity of the sun at various latitudes. In this chapter we will focus on linear equations and the related concept of linear inequalities.

Why Do People Need God?

...Religions in the 21st century- Why do people need God? In this 21st century of science and technology, many changes can be observed, compared to a few centuries ago. Especially, the significance of science has increased our generation to ask for evidence and logical explanations for many things that exist in our current world. Also, with the increased rate of literacy and education level compared to centuries ago, people are not as naïve as those in the past, believing in superstitions, myths and legends. Table 1: the literacy rate of the world as of 2 February 2010, 14:43 (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/07/World_literacy_map_UNHD_2007_2008.png) With the high rate of literacy across the world, as seen in Table 1, we would think that the religion for the educated- 21st century people would be majoring in Atheism. Atheism follows the idea of no God or divine bring. Their beliefs about the universe are usually based on scientific findings. They do not believe in afterlife, thus to them, this one life is of great importance. Only humans can help themselves and each other to solve the world’s problems. However, this is not true, as seen in Table 2 below. Table 2: the approximate number of adherents worldwide for the most common seen religions (http://www.religionfacts.com/big_religion_chart.htm) Religion/Sect/ Belief system | Adherents Worldwide (approx.) | Atheism | 1.1 billion (this figure includes agnostic and non-religious, which tend to be grouped...

Analyse the Reasons Why Costs Need to Be Controlled to Budget

...M4 - Analyse the reasons why costs need to be controlled to budget? Introduction: For this task I will be analysing the advantages and disadvantages about the business that Brad owns which involves transporting business people to and from airports using luxury cars and limousines. Addition to this I will also be explaining what the words budget, fixed, variable and total costs mean. One of the main topics that I will be covering is the fact that if Brad does nothing with his costs what the implication would be on the business as well as him and what encounters it will have. Budget: So what is budget? Budget is a financial document which is used to project future income and expenses. Budgeting is used by everyone who owns a business whether it’d be a large or small business; it is a crucial part of the finance side of the business. The process may be carried out by individuals or by companies to estimate whether the company is keeping within their budget and not over spending. The process for preparing a monthly budget includes: * Listing of all sources of monthly income. * Fixed expenses such as rent/mortgage, utilities, phone bills. * Listing of other possible and variable expenses. A business will always choose how much they are to spend on their resources etc from their budget which is calculated when the business starts. A budget may be prepared simply using paper and pencil, or on computer using a spreadsheet program like......

Reasons Why People Lie

...CH 11 What are the reasons why people lie in Organizations? Lying is sometimes a result from a barrier that is unable to overcome in a organization. These barriers can be talking on the phone, sending emails, gossip, ect. There are many things that a person can lie about in an organization. They could lie about a mistake they made, take credit for something they did not do, lie about communicating internally/externally, or just to save themselves from being punished. These lies are a way to protect ones self from being viewed as a bad asset to the company or organization. Many times when a person is lying to cover up for something they will throw in some curve balls. These curve balls can be true statements or actions the person says in their lie to make it seem more true. For example, if an employee is lying about sending out a shipment late, they may say that the shipment order was filled out and completed and delivered, but it was not delivered. The truth of filling out the shipping document is true but delivering the document is a lie. This little truth in ones lie may make them feel better about the lie and make it more believable. I have not really experienced someone lying to me in a workplace situation but I assume it would be very difficult. It is hard to tell someone that they are lying and get the truth out of them. The only case I can think of was I had a member in a group for school who continuously lied about being late to meeting and not......

Reason Why People Resist Change

...Top Ten Reasons People Resist Change: 1. THE RISK OF CHANGE IS SEEN AS GREATER THAN THE RISK OF STANDING STILL Making a change requires a kind of leap of faith: you decide to move in the direction of the unknown on the promise that something will be better for you. But you have no proof. Taking that leap of faith is risky, and people will only take active steps toward the unknown if they genuinely believe – and perhaps more importantly, feel – that the risks of standing still are greater than those of moving forward in a new direction. Making a change is all about managing risk. If you are making the case for change, be sure to set out in stark, truthful terms why you believe the risk situation favors change. Use numbers whenever you can, because we in the West pay attention to numbers. At the very least, they get our attention, and then when the rational mind is engaged, the emotional mind (which is typically most decisive) can begin to grapple with the prospect of change. But if you only sell your idea of change based on idealistic, unseen promises of reward, you won’t be nearly as effective in moving people to action. The power of the human fight-or-flight response can be activated to fight for change, but that begins with the perception of risk. 2. PEOPLE FEEL CONNECTED TO OTHER PEOPLE WHO ARE IDENTIFIED WITH THE OLD WAY We are a social species. We become and like to remains connected to those we know, those who have taught us, those with whom we are familiar – even......

Analyse the Reasons Why Costs Need to Be Controlled to Budget

...interest on your money and let it grow instead of letting it just sit around gathering dust. The final problem, difficulty in predicting cash flow costs, should be resolved by asking your sale assistants, doing market research or asking an experienced accountant for guidance. You should ask your sale assistants because they are the people on the ground floor and know what’s going on, what the customers like and what products fly off the shelf. They have first hand knowledge on the company as they process the day to day dealings whereas a manager might not always be around. Doing market research will help to find the average prices of all products or services such as insurance, this will ensure you will get the best quote and avoid under predicting the costs for that month. Just to be certain, you can then go and ask an accountant for guidance as they are experts in the field and will have knowledge on how to spread the costs across the period. L & S Ltd Business If we take a look at L & S Ltd business selling watches and jewellery over a twelve month period we will be able to see an example of cash flow. His market is a very expensive one to get set up in as a business and the cash flow scale will be larger compared to a newsagents cash flow as the items cost more to buy in and sell for more. This gives more risk of L & S Ltd becoming overdrawn. L & S Ltd Closing Balances L & S Ltd closing balances are decent apart from one month, September, where he had a......

Why Do People Get Bullied

...— and not just the kids who are getting picked on. Bullying can make school a place of fear and can lead to more violence and more stress for everyone. Why Do Bullies Act That Way? Some bullies are looking for attention. They might think bullying is a way to be popular or to get what they want. Most bullies are trying to make themselves feel more important. When they pick on someone else, it can make them feel big and powerful. Some bullies come from families where everyone is angry and shouting all the time. They may think that being angry, calling names, and pushing people around is a normal way to act. Some bullies are copying what they've seen someone else do. Some have been bullied themselves. Sometimes bullies know that what they are doing or saying hurts other people. But other bullies may not really know how hurtful their actions can be. Most bullies don't understand or care about the feelings of others. Bullies often pick on someone they think they can have power over. They might pick on kids who get upset easily or who have trouble sticking up for themselves. Getting a big reaction out of someone can make bullies feel like they have the power they want. Sometimes bullies pick on someone who is smarter than they are or different from them in some way. Sometimes bullies just pick on a kid for no reason at all. Gemma told her mom that this one kid was picking on her for having red hair and freckles. She wanted to be like the other kids but she couldn’t......

Reasons Why Managers Need to Be Acquainted with Programming, Web Source Code, and Technology.

...benefits and limitations (Meyers, 2011). The explosion of technology has led to an economic globalization where the transmission of information is no longer limited by space and time. Managers must continually utilize this flow of information efficiently to maximize their performance. In conclusion, in a technology fueled economy, it’s apparent that a manager must be tech-savvy if they want to remain marketable and beneficial to whichever organization they serve. M4-Analyse the Reasons Why Cocts Need to Be Controlled

...M4-Analyse the reasons why costs need to be controlled to budget. In my report I’m going to analyse the reasons why costs need to be controlled and why businesses set budgets as targets or limits. I am also going to use the figures from the income and expenditure for the business Hairliners and going to explain the reasons why Headliners needs to use a budget to control their costs. Costs and budgets need to be controlled in order to know what is received and spend. For instance, if costs and budgets are not controlled when running a business, then it will run the risk of spending more money than it is taking or not spending enough money to grow the business and compete. The reason organisation needs to control their costs properly would be that it would end up saving money on expenses and increase its revenue. This will help the company to increase its revenues and this would allow the company to invest more money if required. The business should control its costs so that it saves money and by having the right amount of stock the business can then have the full benefits of selling those stocks and receiving cash which could be used for other areas of the business or buy more stock if they are confident they can sell it all. A budget divides your expenses into overhead and production costs. Overhead costs are operating expenses such as phones, insurance, marketing and rent. If you don’t know your overhead and production costs for each unit of a product you produce you......

10 Reasons Why We Don’t Need Gm Foods

...10 REASONS WHY we don’t need GM foods With the cost of food skyrocketing – hitting not just shoppers but the poor and hungry in the developing world – genetically modified (GM) foods are once again being promoted as the way to feed the world. But this is little short of a confidence trick. Far from needing more GM foods, there are urgent reasons why we need to ban them altogether. 1. GM foods won’t solve the food crisis A 2008 World Bank report concluded that increased biofuel production is the major cause of the increase in food prices.1 GM giant Monsanto has been at the heart of the lobbying for biofuels (crops grown for fuel rather than food) — while profiting enormously from the resulting food crisis and using it as a PR opportunity to promote GM foods! “The climate crisis was used to boost biofuels, helping to create the food crisis; and now the food crisis is being used to revive the fortunes of the GM industry.” — Daniel Howden, Africa correspondent of The Independent2 “The cynic in me thinks that they’re just using the current food crisis and the fuel crisis as a springboard to push GM crops back on to the public agenda. I understand why they’re doing it, but the danger is that if they’re making these claims about GM crops solving the problem of drought or feeding the world, that’s bullshit.” – Prof Denis Murphy, head of biotechnology at the University of Glamorgan in Wales3 commercialization, genetic engineering has failed to significantly increase US crop......

Why Do Justice Get There Jobs for Life

...Why do justices get their jobs for life? The section “Why do justices get their jobs for life” by Patricia Smith is about how the nation’s highest court (The Supreme Court) really work. The Supreme Court is the center of today’s most important inclines and declines. With health care, crime and punishment. Americans have called for the court to answer the questions to why are we having the problems and what are they doing to solve them. One of those questions are “Why do justices get their job for life?” Some say it is to protect them from fear of political actions of the decisions they have made while in office. The constitution says federal judges in The Supreme Court serve under “good behavior” but, other judges do not get the same benefit. This causes conflict because justices are serving much longer than they use to. Between the time period 1789 and 1970, justices served an average of 15 years. Then between 1970 and 2005 the rate went up to 26 years. “Longevity isn’t the problem” says Patricia. Justice John Paul Stevens, who retired back in 2010 at the age of 91 after serving 34 years on the Court, was full active in the court and the work until his retirement. But, William O. Douglas remained on the Court practically a year after suffering a serious stroke back in 1974. An importance of life occupation is the occurrence of Dwayne Flott Page 2 Vacancies. This first occurred when President Jimmy Carter had no Supreme Court vacancies to fill. But, President Nixon...

11 Reasons Why You Must Get Internship Experience in College

...11 Reasons Why You MUST Get Internship Experience in College As one would expect, recent research from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) proves that students with internship experience are significantly more likely to get hired after college than peers lacking internship experience. NACE’s research also shows that students with internship experience tend to have much higher starting salaries than students without such experience. Here are 11 specific reasons why internship experience in college is so essential for career success after graduation. 1. Internships demonstrate initiative. Every employer (or graduate school) wants “go-getters.” Given that internships are usually not required in college, such experience will prove that you are proactive about career development. 2. Internships help you learn more about yourself. Through an internship, you can gain clarity on your strengths, weaknesses, and interests. Equally important, you can also learn what you don’t enjoy doing. 3. Internships enhance your resume. Worried about having a solid resume? Internship experience can fix that concern. 4. Internships help you sell yourself in interviews. Worried about what you will discuss in an interview for a full-time job? Internship experience helps you overcome that obstacle also. 5. Internships increase your professional confidence. By interning, you can confront and overcome the “fear of the unknown” that you may have about what it’s like......

Reasons Why People Attend College

...Reasons why people attend college Reasons for attending college vary from person to person. In “Articles and Advice”, Jeff McGuire points out that three of the most important reasons are more career opportunities, growth and development, and the opportunity to gain valuable career resources during a person’s time attending college. In recent years the state of the economy has been down, which is leading to job losses and the high increase of unemployment in our country. Making the choice to attend college can give one the opportunity to fulfill his or her dreams and benefit from learning skills one will need in their desired field of study. The first reason to attend college is for more career opportunities. Attending college and receiving your degree will open doors that may have never been opened if not enrolled. Better careers can also lead to higher wages. If one has a family, this can be important. One may also have all the appropriate skills and knowledge for jobs but may get overlooked without having a college degree. “The U.S. has been transformed from a manufacturing-based economy to an economy based on the knowledge, and the importance of a college education today can be compared to that of a high school education forty years ago,” writes Jeff McGuire. The second reason people attend college is for growth and development. Interacting with classmates, reading, and writing are all ways to help one grow his or her mind and to develop different techniques to be......

Art & Forgery: Why People Get Involved

...Art and Forgery: Why People Get Involved CREA232: Art History from the 15th Century Artists and art dealers have been forging works of art since the time of Rome. The reasons for the choice to forge works of art and the provenance of works of art can vary, but ultimately they lead back to one of two reasons: financial gain and/or to trick the art world. Crimes of forgery affect the entire art market. The entire art trade with the exception of the buyer all earns money when they handle a piece that is not what it is claimed to be. Often times the only person that loses out is the buyer when a piece is discovered to be forged. There are three distinct types of people that contribute to forgery in the art world. The forgers themselves, the art dealers who know that a piece is fake and yet still authorize it as original and someone who finds a piece and passes it off as something else to increase its value. The most common types of forgery and deception are wholesale forgery, alteration forgery, provenance forgery and willful misattribution. Wholesale forgery is when a piece is passed off as something that is either older than it actually is or by someone more valuable than the artist who created it. Alteration forgery is an actual work that has been altered in some way to increase its value. An example of this type of forgery is to add a signature when it was originally not there. Provenance forgery is when the paperwork that accompanies a piece of art is forged......

Why People Needs to Learn More Than Two Languages ?

...Why people needs to learn more than two languages ? Nowadays, more people are popular learning more than two languages. We can legibly see from the high school. Why I Need the People Around Me

...Why I need the people around me To me, the people around me are to me like oxygen is to a tree. Of course, the tree might live a short period of time without oxygen but it will be tough. I might make it on my own for a while although it is tough, or, at least, that is what I might think but I can do great things with a team, the people around me. I was always taught that there is no I in the team and I value that. Together is just so much better than me because imagine the fun in making a beautiful cake all by yourself and imagine the fun in doing it with your friends, icing and smiles will be on everyone’s faces and there will definitely be memories in their hearts. The people around me are like a support system, there is someone I can talk to when it gets tough, someone that I can cheer up when it's tough for them people to share experiences and memories with and people that will dream with me when I share my dreams with them. If I value the people around me I will involve them the way Jesus involved people when he talked, or even when he travelled. Thinking I can make it on my own is thinking “there’s no I in team but there are an m and an e” it's foolish and so dumb, because who wants to walk 1000 miles with a heavy backpack filled with burdens if you can drive 1000 miles in a bus filled with joy, laughter and support. Together we can....
