The world of the manager is complicated and confusing. Making sense of it requires not a knack for simplification but the ability to synthesize insights from different mind-sets into a comprehensible whole.

T

HE CHIEF EXECUTIVE of a major Canadian com-

pany complained recently that he can't get his engineers to think like managers. It's a common complaint, but behind it lies an uncommonly important question: What does it mean to think like a manager? Sadly, little attention has been paid to that question in recent years. Most of us have become so enamored of "leadership" that "management" has been pushed into the background. Nobody aspires to being a good manager anymore; everybody wants to be a great leader. But the separation of management from leadership is dangerous. Just as management without leadership encourages an uninspired style, which deadens activities, leadership without management encourages a disconnected style, which promotes hubris. And we all know the destructive

power of hubris in organizations. So let's get back to plain old management. The problem, of course, is that plain old management is complicated and confusing. Be global, managers are told, and be local. Collaborate, and compete. Change, perpetually, and maintain order. Make the numbers while nurturing your people. How is anyone supposed to reconcile all this? The fact is, no one can. To be effective, managers need to face the juxtapositions in order to arrive at a deep integration of these seemingly contradictory concerns. That means they must focus not only on what they have to accomplish but also on how they have to think. Managers need various "mind-sets." Helping managers appreciate that was the challenge we set for ourselves in the…...

5 Primary Activities of a Project Manager

...and the part the project manager plays in this. First and foremost, project management is a TEAM SPORT, and in today's modern society it relies on the principal players of the team taking responsibility and accountability for those aspects of the project they have been charged with. Indeed, this ethos should be passed down to all team members irrespective of their level of involvement in the project. All Teams need a LEADER, our view is that this is THE principal role of the one commonly referred to as the 'Project Manager'. We shall however, continue to refer to the principal project management role as the Project Manager. Many organisations and project sponsors set their projects up to fail because they do not fully recognise how important the project management role is, to successfully manage a project through its life cycle. It is still common that project managers are appointed on a part-time basis, the assumption being they can manage the project on a part-time basis as a stretch to their other day to day duties and responsibilities. To successfully manage the project management process, requires full-time commitment. Though in practice 'time' may be shared with other duties and responsibilities, when it comes to the crunch, the project must get the first call when a conflict of interest arises. This leads nicely to the statement "The Mission is the No.1 Priority, no-one is bigger than the Mission!", including the Project Manager! Provided the project......

Keeping Others in Mind: the Very Social Cognition of Asian Managers

...Keeping Others in Mind: The Very Social Cognition of Asian Managers Zhixing Xiao* Steven K. Su** 1 Introduction Do we need a separate model of psychology to describe how Asians process information in the managerial context? Do Asian and Western managers evaluating the same business decision take fundamentally different paths and reach different conclusions? One view might hold that just as the rules of mathematics are identical in the East and West, the rules of analysis in business will tend to be very similar, and hence no special differentiation is necessary for the Asian context. We suggest that while business organizations in each culture engage in similar behavior, there are nonetheless deep social differences that pervade how information is processed. We offer as an analogy the difference between dining in China and dining in the West. In both contexts, the major activity of the patrons is to receive a meal in exchange for payment. Aside from the fact that the food in these restaurants tastes different, many differences in venue reflect different social beliefs and assumptions. In the West, restaurants are usually equipped with rectangular tables, often suitable for two to four people, at which the diners randomly take seats. In China, it is more common to have large round tables that allow each individual to directly face a large number of compatriots. Seats around the table are not random, but instead have hierarchical status: those facing the door are......

5 Minds

...5 Minds for the Future Review Howard Gardner, in his book “5 Minds for the Future”, places a large emphasis on the power of the mind and a compelling case for fundamental change in how we as a society cultivate and develop our minds. He describes the five minds or characteristics in which current and future generations need to identify as to equip ourselves to prepare for a rapidly advancing future. It is unlikely many will be able to develop them all equally in ones self, but we should develop them with a balance to effectively engage in the expected and anticipated future. Gardner argues those who do not develop these minds will be subject to situations or circumstances well beyond their control. The development of these minds begins with parents, peers, and media all playing an important role in influencing young peoples’ minds. The 5 minds of the Future outlined by Gardner are: The Disciplined Mind The Synthesizing Mind The Creating Mind The Respectful Mine; and The Ethical Mind. Education is the key factor in cultivating and developing these minds. No student, professional, or young person can afford to sit back on intellectual cruise control lest they become irrelevant and ill equipped. Success will be for those committed to a lifetime of learning, experimenting, and experiencing the development of the 5 minds. Gardner suggests traditional approaches to education are unchanged and in many way narrow minded. He believes the world has changed......

5 General Style of Manager

...Manager by “Kayod”. “kayod” is a term which refers to “hard work” or “sweating out” to achieve goals or produce something. This kind of manager tends to be action-hungry, has strong or strict working ethics and usually refuses any kind or form of bribery. Priority-oriented with a strong inclination to gut feeling, this kind of manager seeks for optimum and maximum performance from their subordinates and has gift for identifying and utilizing people and resources to address problems in the workplace. Practical and pragmatic, he or she tends to decide fast and demands faster solution to workplace problems. Impatient and impulsive, this manager tends to demand higher performance from subordinates according to his or her standards, although if properly related to, he/she could provide practical guidance and break down workloads into manageable size. Working under them is like riding a roller-coaster that never ends, and worst, they love to be the operator of that rides which means, no getting down. How to manage them is the direct opposite to operating a roller coaster: be the first to volunteer to get down before the daze becomes overwhelming. Hard worker as they know themselves to be, “Manager by Kayod” needs people to remind them that their strength is not boundless, so as the rest of the team, and the reminder would be much appreciated if given as direct feedback in a friendly manner, treating him or her as a colleague rather than a boss. Manager by “Libro”. Libro in English...

The Active Mind of de Anima Iii 5

...After characterizing the mind (nous) and its activities in De Anima iii 4, Aristotle takes a surprising turn. In De Anima iii 5, he introduces an obscure and hotly disputed subject: the active mind or active intellect (nous poiêtikos). Controversy surrounds almost every aspect of De Anima iii 5, not least because in it Aristotle characterizes the active mind—a topic mentioned nowhere else in his entire corpus—as ‘separate and unaffected and unmixed, being in its essence actuality’ (chôristos kai apathês kai amigês, tê(i) ousia(i) energeia; DA iii 5, 430a17–18) and then also as ‘deathless and everlasting’ (athanaton kai aidion; DA iii 5, 430a23). This comes as no small surprise to readers of De Anima, because Aristotle had earlier in the same work treated the mind (nous) as but one faculty (dunamis) of the soul (psuchê), and he had contended that the soul as a whole is not separable from the body (DA ii 1, 413a3–5). While not strictly a contradiction, this constellation of views does present a serious interpretative difficulty. How could the active mind be separable if it is a capacity of the soul and the soul is not separable? How, indeed, might a capacity be separated from that of which it is a capacity? Typically we expect capacities to be grounded and not free-floating. In what precise sense, then, is the active mind separable, conceptually or ontologically? For that matter, from what precisely is the active mind held to be separable—the body, the other faculties of the...
