These trials were a series of hearings and prosecution of people who were accused of witchcraft in the colonial Massachusetts. The preliminary hearings were also conducted in a variety of towns across the province, but the most serious one was conducted by the court of Terminer and Oyer in Salem Town (The DBQ Project, 2002). The Salem Witch Trials were sparked by hysteria mixed with family rivalries. The trial led to the execution of 19 defendants who were accused of witch craft and the 20th defendant by the name Giles Corey was pressed to death because of refusing to plead guilty.                 The main accusers of the Salem Witch Trials were immediate neighbors and family members. The Salem witch Hunt started when the daughter and cousin of Reverend Samuel became sick and without proper diagnosis, the doctor inferred that the two girls were bewitched. ...War and Witchcraft HIS/113 January 6th 2014 Shaun Sullivan, MA War and Witchcraft This paper exemplifies the idea of dissent with a focus on witchcraft throughout the early development of society and the impact Malleus Malefic arum had on society. According to an article, H.C. Eric Midelfort which states, “the communal claim is that it was singularly responsible for the outburst of witch hunting that swept across Europe from the 15th through the 18th century” (para, 15)? The Malleus Malefic arum was an essential point in the early study of witch hunts across Europe. The Malleus was written in 1486 by Heinrich Kramer, who was a Dominican Monk. This that same year the Pope Innocent VII, issued the Bull Summis Desiderantes Affectibus. The Bull Summis means, “Yearning with supreme ardour.” Issued to combat was “ecclesiastical officials” from obstructing Kramer and his collaborator Jakob Sprenger, in their efforts to battle sacrilege. According to the website (Evil-One.org), in 2011, paragraph 13,” initiated were the severe measures against witches and magicians in Germany. The desired effect was to make the immediate population fearful about being infested with witches and witchcraft. With the publication of Innocents Bull Summis at his side, Kramer was able to arrest and charge an estimated 50 women with witchcraft; and not only were they arrested and held accountable and tortured, but the women were denied any type of legal counsel.......

...The Salem Witch Trials The Salem Witch Trials were a series of court hearings and prosecutions of people accused of performing witchcraft and other supernatural abilities in colonial Massachusetts. These occurred between February 1692 and May 1693. Although they are referred to as the Salem witch trials, the preliminary hearings were done in various towns: Salem Village, Ipswich, Andover, and Salem Town. These trials had a lasting effect on a multitude of things in the formation of the United States of America and its colonies. The trials brought about warnings of isolationism, religious extremism, false accusations, and profiling based off of social class. Thanks to these trials, America was able to take caution in them to help them eventually form the great country it is today. In order to completely understand the effect of the trials it is necessary to have a little information from the trials. Salem was originally founded in 1626 by a group of European fisherman. Over the years it had gotten a little larger of a town, but never too big. Overall in the incident, around 24 people died because of their accusations of being a witch; whether from being executed, tortured in order to get information, or being killed while in prison. Isolationism really added in influencing the mass hysteria of the people of Salem. They were all so far away from everyone else they essentially had no ways of communicating with anyone at all and they rarely got any news of anything.......

Witch Trials

...The witch-trial crisis of the 17th century does somewhat predict to be an outcome of the puritanical community. The puritan community has very strict religious views and the members of the community had many rules of does and don’ts that were allowed. This would be very hard for young girls to follow the rules while the temptations of the world taunted them throughout their lives. With the rules, however, the only way to cover up their mishaps would be to fake a widely growing fear of witch-craft that was very frowned upon in the puritan religion. And if you had enemies that you did not like and wanted to get rid of then all you would have to do is call witch on them and then watch them suffer as what you had done was looked over at the bigger issue at hand. The blame of superstition and paranoia does not belong to Salem, but the idea of charging someone of a crime based on fear of an unknown along with unexplained occurrence led to the crisis that killed many people. This of course would cause larger fear and paranoia because with people dying because of the accusation of being called a witch, most were worried or paranoid of what might happen if they do something that people might question as witch-craft. And whether you do something that may be considered witch craft or not then you had the chance of being accused of the crime by others that did not like you, even if they knew you had done no such a thing....

Every scholarly discipline contributes to what could be the possible answer from ergot poisoning to the psycho-social factor among Africans and American Indians. The road that leads to Salem comes from Europe where witch-hunts rose and fell. The reasons behind the trials themselves are complex. While economics, socioeconomic class issues, tainted food supply, property disputes, and congregational feuds are all listed as causes, the clergy and its congregation are what fueled the accusations and thereby deaths of many town citizens. Witchcraft and sorcery have long attracted the attention of historians and other scholars with the spotlight aimed at 14th-17th century Europe. During the 14th-17th centuries, thousands were executed but to try to be a number to it would be futile. There have been those who have been able to calculate those executed for witchcraft in small towns but the sheer number of countries a part of the craze makes it hard to get an approximate number. Not all the hunts were the same; the witch hunt in Scotland was different than the hunt in England and that hunt differed from the witch hunt in continental Europe. Witch Craze

...Witch Craze in Europe Between 1520 and 1650, the Reformation had a huge impact on European countries and the way the people perceived religion. Due to increasing disagreements within the community and the Catholic Church, there became a need for the Church to reform; this Reformation became a catalyst for the witch-hunt by increasing society’s fear of the devil and social anxiety. These witch-hunts mainly targeted women, seeing as they were considered to be midwives and healers, they became legally more vulnerable to these hunts. It can be seen that witchcraft was the embodiment of a fear of instability, so in countries where the Catholic Church had much more stability, there are evidently less witch-hunts. The witch-hunts died out as the religious situation across Europe settled down and stabilized. Beginning in the early fourteenth century until about 1650, early modern Europeans were in the process of a religious reformation. The Reformation heightened awareness of evil within European culture and caused more harm than good to society. As fears arose, new beliefs emerged and in an attempt to understand these fears, people began to look for other ways to combat this new presence evil. Ironically, the very means people sought to protect themselves was what increased the paranoia of witchcraft leading to the death of many. Middleton's the Witch

Middleton's primary source for material on witches was the Discovery of Witchcraft , written by Reginald Scot (1584),from which the playwright drew invocations, demons' names, and potion ingredients. Liard and Robin! White Spirits, Black Spirits, Gray Spirits, Red Spirits! Devil-toad, Devil-ram! Devil-cat, and Devil-Dam! With a great Invocation of Witch-Spirits- Heccat the Witch-Queen (leader of her Witch-Coven) sweeps onto the stage. The St. Osyth Witches of Essex represent one of the first well-known English Witch-Cases; The St. Osyth Case is most known for being the first English case to utilize the accusations of children against adults. The child in this case is the eight year-old son of the primary accused Witch Ursula Kemp, clearly prompted and guided in his testimony. Hecate’s Entrance speech is derived from Ursula Kemp’s eight year-old son’s descriptions of his mother’s familiars- Titty, Tiffin, Suckin and Pidgen were their names (according to the boy). Blair Witch Project Film Analysis

...civilization’s evolving the way it is, it has become harder to deliver true horror and suspense in the 21st century. With such a visual venue, cinema audiences want to experience the supernatural in the most organic way possible. Therefore, a film like the Blair Witch Project could only succeed due to its ability to recreate the “archival effect”. Some skeptical audiences might not fall for the entirety of the storyline and the lie of its “foudness”, but one detail remains true, “The Blair Witch fans attest to the fact that the sense of the “found” nevertheless persists within my broadened definition of the archival document.” (49). The 1999 horror film Blair Witch Project opens with the intro “In October of 1994, three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland, while shooting a documentary… A year later their footage was found”. The film sets up the audience to believe a true story told by found footage, without giving much backdrop to the story, the filmmakers used a strategy that could have only worked once, create a film where the characters do all of the filming themselves so that it feels as if the audience is also experimenting the haunting. In this story there is no computer animated witch, no jump scares, no special effects; it is pure suspense that keeps the audience hooked on the horror, and gives the archival effect a new purpose. The significance of the archival effect is not in its authenticity, but in its overall effect it......

...Witch-Hunts, Then and Now Witch-Hunts, Then and Now, is the topic I have chosen for my research paper, which will define similarities and differences between the “Salem Witch Trials” and “The Second Red Scare”.
