The Blues Brothers Hero Cycle In The movie "The Blues Brothers" (1980), the main character Joliet Jake Blues travels the hero's journey along with his brother Elwood, to save the orphanage in which they grew up. They face many obstacles along this journey and receive help from many different sources. The call for the journey comes after Joliet Jake's release from prison, he had vowed to visit the mother nun at the orphanage they were raised in, and was now forced to go by his brother. Once they arrive they are soon greeted by their friend and mentor Cab Calloway an old friendly janitor from the orphanage who tells them that the bank wants to foreclose on the land. Although it is never stated it is inferred that the mother at the orphanage scared Jake with the concept of evil, and wanted to go on this journey in order to cleanse himself of this evil. This is a transformative crisis because Jake has never before been a religious man, he has never before worried about the after life. It is a sudden irrational fear which derives from the lecture which the nun gave them upon their return to the orphanage. The Threshold is overcome when the blues brothers visit the church of Reverend Cleophus James who inspires Jake and Elwood to reunite their former band, The Blues Brothers, in order to earn enough money to save the orphanage. Jake is touched by the reverends sermon he is scared into action by the idea of eternal damnation. He has an epiphany during the church's gospel number and vows to form his old band a new. This is not as easy as it sounds. Jake faces many challenges simply convincing his former band-mates to rejoin the band. This is an unknown for Jake because for the first time other musicians want nothing to do with him. Before he went to prison he was royalty among musicians, but now because he owed so much money, no one trusted him. He had never been in this position before and had do a to of reconciling in order to over come this obstacle. The abyss was directly linked to the challenge because it proved to cause Jake to overcome another challenge. The abyss was when the band could not find a paying job, this caused the major challenge of keeping the band together. Jake was forced to promise everyone large pay days in order to convince them to rejoin the band, so when no money began coming in the band got angry, and a call for a mutiny was made. The transformation occurs when Jake and Elwood are held up at a gas station waiting for a delivery of gas to come in. Because they are late once they arrive at the venue they are able to see all of the cop cars which have surrounded the perimeter, meaning there would be no escape. Seeing this and becoming a changed and righteous man, Jake marches onward to save the orphanage. The revelation occurs in the form of a business man, who offers them a record deal and enough cash to save the orphanage, and pay the band. He then informs them of a back entrance, and the light is viewable at the end of the tunnel of their journey. All they have to do is escape, go to chicago, deliver the money to the accounting firm of the city, and save the orphanage. Jakes atonement comes right after he delivers the cash for the orphanage. After running from the police for nearly the entire movie, he is able to go peace fully without a fight. He is contempt with the life he has had outside of prison, and knows the sacrifice he made and is contempt with his life. In the final scene of the movie Jake is seen playing with his band, which has been reunited in prison. They play the song "Jailhouse Rock" and are able to once again deliver the gift of beautiful music, this time to their fellow prisoners. Joliet jake Blues grows a great deal along this journey, he becomes spiritual and redeems himself and most importantly becomes satisfied with himself. After being restless and unhappy in his life before the movie, where he felt it necessary to steal more money to order to make himself happy, he learns to be contempt with what he has, and sacrifices the rest for good.…...

Hero

...Hero’s Never Forgotten Today in the 21st century anybody can be considered a hero, but back the days you had to earn to become a hero. The past few weeks I learned what it really meant to be a hero and how to become a hero. Hero’s can be different in so many ways, but they can also be similar in so many ways as well. Hero’s are often the strongest, smartest, and most looked up to people in their village or country. In this essay I will be comparing and contrasting two great warriors who have earned to become a hero. Beowulf, and the character from the 13th warrior are two amazing hero’s that have a lot of courage and strength for their people and their own soul. Beowulf came to be considered a hero when he hears the tragic story of king Hrothgar. Afterwards he sailed to Denmark to help out the helpless king Hrothgar and his army who have been attacked many times by the cruel Grendel. Grendel in the story is considered to be a horrible demon that lives in the swamplands of Hrothgar’s kingdom. Grendel attacked the warriors because of the noise they made when they were in Heorot. Therefore Grendel terrorized the warriors every night, killing them and defeating their efforts to fight back. Beowulf who at the time was inspired by the story he heard went with some of his closest companions, and asks the great king Hrothgar if he could fight the mean devil Grendel, and without a doubt the helpless king accepts the offer. At last Grendel arrives, to a feast the king held for......

Hero

...Joseph Campbell published The Hero with a Thousand Faces in 1949 that discussed the journey of the hero in most heroic stories. I have applied Campbell’s hero cycle to The Matrix, starring Keenu Reeves and created by Andy and Larry Wachowski. The Call to Adventure in The Matrix This is the first step in Campbell’s hero cycle. This initial step is followed by helpers. * The Call to Adventure – In The Matrix, Neo is called to the adventure when Trinity sends him a message over his computer telling him to follow the white rabbit. Trinity tells Neo, “The answer is out there, Neo, and it's looking for you, and it will find you if you want it to.” * Helper – His helpers are Trinity, who respects as a computer hacker and calls him to action, and Morpheus, who tries to guide him away from the agents who try to capture him. The Crossing in The Matrix * The crossing is the point in which the hero reaches the point of no return. From this point the hero can never come back to his/her previous life. After the hero crosses over, the hero must pass tests with some help from others. * The Crossing – In The Matrix, the point of no return occurs when Morpheus offers Neo a choice of two pills. If he picks one, he will return to world he knows. If he selects the other pill, he will see the new world, the world as it actually exists. Neo, of course, selects the pill that shows him that the matrix is just a construct. Morpheus states, “I'm trying to free your mind, Neo. But I......

Heros

...Michaela Sweat April 23, 2013 2nd Period- English 11 Writing assignment 2- Who is your hero? Who is my hero? Well, a lot of people would say our troops. They are our hero, they fight for us every day. They fight for us to be able to say what we want, bare arms, not say a word, etc. Therefore, aren’t they our hero? Wait no, you said MY hero. Well I have a couple of heroes… but the most important, most significant hero in my life is this guy named John Carson. John Carson is my hero. He is my grandfather; but really he is my dad. The first reason he is my hero is because he saved me from a life that would probably not been so good. I met him when I was 2 years old. When I was about 5 years old my mom gave me to my grandparents; John and Rita Carson. He took me and my brother in. Which is about 14 years (this year). Me and my brother gave him about 573857837847258728 grey hairs since he got us, but he hasn’t stopped loving us, he has never left us, and he has never gave up. Papaw is my name for him. Papaw is my hero because I can walk up to him, crying or upset, and ask for a hug. And he will give me a hug. This makes him a hero to me because I don’t have a dad. He is my dad. So what this means to me, is that there is a man in my life who will be there for me when I’m upset about whatever it may be, he doesn’t care what the reason may be. He will comfort me. He will make me feel better. Sometimes that is what you need in your life, you don’t need to go to your mom, or...

Hero

...My Hero Even Though my dad isn’t the strongest hero he still is the best, inspiring, and courageous, and willing hero to me. Inspiration is motivation which people work towards everyday. Courage is what every hero has to help others work through demanding changes and challenges. I think willingness is the best trait about every hero because helping people is what they do. In conclusion, inspiration, courage, and willingness is what heroes use to help them make a difference in the world and my life. Inspiration is a great trait which all awesome heroes possess. My dad inspires me by caring for everybody around him. This motivates me by doing the same thing. My dad is very athletic, and he led by example. This is on of the reasons why I play basketball and lacrosse. He always cares for me no matter what happens in our father/daughter life. Even if he has had a challenging day at work, I know he will be happy when it comes time to see me and my brother. Even after a hard day at work, his day is not done, I know he still works hard physically and mentally. His works habits inspires me, and gives me a level of commitment and accountability in my everyday life. Another strong trait my dad has is courage. He is always protective of others. Hero Honda Split

...Abstract: This case is about the split between the Hero Group and Honda Motor Company. Hero Honda Motors Ltd. (Hero Honda), a joint venture between Hero Cycles of India and Honda of Japan, came into existence in 1984 as a motorcycle and scooter manufacturer in India. In 2001, Hero Honda became the largest two wheeler manufacturing company in India with over a million units produced as well as the 'World's number one' company in terms of the unit volume sales for the calendar year. The technology for manufacturing the bikes was provided by Honda whereas Hero was strong in its distribution and service network spread across the country. | | In August 1999, Honda Motor Company announced the setting up of Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) for making scooters and later motorcycles as well. After this, the stock of Hero Honda fell by 30%. Subsequently, HMSI started producing motorcycles, competing directly with Hero Honda. Hero felt that its ambition to go international was being hampered by the joint venture. Both the companies decided to end the joint venture and signed their parting agreement on December 16, 2010. With the split, the erstwhile partners became competitors. Both the companies have several opportunities ahead of them and are likely to face challenges to gain and consolidate their position in the Indian two wheeler market. Issues: » Understand the benefits (utilizing strong points of both) and problems (different ambitions) of companies being in a......

Epic Hero

An Introduction to Greek Tragedy. New York: Cambridge UP, 2010. Print. What defines an epic hero? There are many things that do, and I’m going to break the Epic Hero Cycle down describing how Job from the bible qualifies as an epic hero in the following passage. I will first list, and describe each step in the Epic Hero Cycle, then give a brief summary of the story, then describe each step of the Epic Hero Cycle using references of Oedipus from the Oedipus the King. The first step of the Epic Hero Cycle is meeting the main character, who usually possesses some type of supernatural power. The character is introduced, sometimes with an introduction. Occasionally there is a brief background on the character. The hero’s family may be introduced. The hero’s life may be good at the time, or it may be going bad. The second step of the Epic Hero Cycle is when the hero is charged with a quest. Usually given by a king or someone in high power, the hero is sent off on a voyage. Sometimes the hero is a figure such as an ultimate warrior, and the king sends him on a voyage since he is the bravest. The third step in the Epic Hero Cycle is when the hero is challenged with a test. The test is to prove himself as a worthy hero who can......

Hero

...What is a hero? A hero can be someone from all walks of life in their very own way. Heroes are seen in so many aspects. There are the heroes that are depicted in the movies and on television, and then there are the real heroes in reality that are just ordinary everyday people from that cashier at the local store to the neighbor that lives two houses down the street. To me personally a hero is someone that gives unselfishly to others and puts them before themselves in every way. This is also a person that would go to extremes to do for others that maybe in need. In society today a hero is not someone that does something for the recognition, but just simply because they want to. In today’s society others have many different views on what a hero is, and that can be anything from what they see on TV and movies, to what they see in their family members and friends. A hero is all what you make that person out to be in your eyes. When I look around and view my family and friends that are in my life there are several that stand out as heroes, but that one person that has the different characteristics and qualities of what a hero in my eyes is my husband Greg. In my eyes he has always been my hero, but he’s a hero to so many others as well for more reasons than one. He’s very easy to get along with and always there for his family and friends no matter what as a husband, father, friend, brother, and son. He’s a hero in the lives of others just by letting them know that in life...

Blues

...Finding Light through the Darkness In James Baldwin’s short story, “Sonny’s Blues”, the narrator which is Sonny’s brother, James attempts to understand the life of his younger brother Sonny. Through trials and tribulations both brothers see the light through the darkness that surrounds both of their lives. From childhood to adulthood, both brothers go through experiences, which would have an everlasting effect on their lives. The story is set in Harlem, New York City approximately after the Korean War. The brothers' military service plays an important role in the socio-historical context of the story. The narrator refers to being "home on leave from the army" during the war; he remarks that his father "died suddenly, during a drunken weekend in the middle of the war, when Sonny was fifteen", and he informs the reader that both he and Sonny served in the military. It is important to notice and understand these references to the military service of the brothers. The characters in "Sonny's Blues" reflect this tendency: As a teenager, Sonny yearns to enlist in the army or navy because it would take him away from the "killing streets" of Harlem and give him the opportunity to get a college education on the GI Bill. The narrator, too, has struggled in spite of his military service to his country to attain success and safety at home. He fought the war, returned home to become an algebra teacher, and a productive member of the middle class, and yet because of......

Hero

...Sg was a hero (masculine or gender-neutral) or heroine (feminine) (Ancient Greek: ἥρως,hḗrōs) is a person or character in literature who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, displays courage or self-sacrifice—that is, heroism—for some greater good. Historically, the first heros displayed courage or excellence aswarriors. The word's meaning was later extended to include moral excellence. The word can be used as a gender-neutral term for both males and females[1]because it has no gender-specific suffix in English. Stories of heroism may serve as moral examples. In classical antiquity, cults that venerated deified heroes such as Heracles, Perseus, and Achilles played an important role in Ancient Greek religion. Politicians, ancient and modern, have employed hero worship for their own apotheosis (i.e., cult of personality). Stories of the antihero also play a major role in Greek mythology and much of literature. The antihero is a protagonist who lacks the typical characteristics of heroism, such as honor, nobility, bravery, compassion, and fortitude. The favorite type of antihero is an individual who lacks moral character.[2] The concept of a story archetype of the standard "hero's quest" ormonomyth pervasive across all cultures is somewhat controversial. Expounded mainly by Joseph Campbell in The Hero with a Thousand Faces (published in 1949), it illustrates several uniting themes of hero stories that hold similar ideas of what a hero......

Hero

...RESULT UPDATE HERO MOTOCORP Disappointment continues India Equity Research| Automobiles Hero MotoCorp’s (HMCL) Q3FY15 EBITDA at INR8.2bn was ~11% below our/consensus estimates, due to lumpy brand promotions (Tiger Woods/Sardar Singh) and staff costs (Neemrana plant). PAT at INR5.8bn was further hit by lower other income and higher tax rate. We expect margins to recover from Q4FY15 on lower brand related spend and reversal in excise duty anomaly. Similarly, domestic scooter volumes will see an uptick with increase in capacity and expiry of the one-time order from Sri Lanka. However, owing to weak traction in volumes, we prune our FY15/FY16 volume estimates by 4% and EPS by 8%/2%. We introduce FY17 numbers with volume growth of 12% and EPS of INR199. Maintain ‘HOLD’ with TP of INR2,990 (15x FY17E EPS). Intensifying competition in the executive motorcycle segment and weak brand franchise in the premium segment are key headwinds to our volume/margin estimates. Operating performance fails yet again While revenue at INR68.4bn was in line, EBITDA at INR8.2bn was ~11% below our/consensus expectations, primarily owing to higher other expenses. While gross margin improved 20bps QoQ, higher staff costs (up 50bps QoQ to 4.6% of sales) and other expenses (up 110bps QoQ to 11.7% of sales) impacted overall margins (-150bps QoQ at 12%). Staff costs inched up as Neemrana plant came on-stream, while promotion spends pertaining to Tiger Woods led to higher overheads. Lower......

Eulogy of My Brother

...A TRIBUTE TO MY BROTHER, ONE HELLUVA GUY I would be lying if I said that Roy and I have been close all of our lives. I perceived his deafness as an insurmountable barrier to closeness when we were kids. As it turns out, I was wrong and we became very close as we grew into adults. I came to know an extraordinary man who had an unrivalled love for life and laughter. He was a kind, gentle and generous man whose number one priority in life was to look after Mum. He was always quick to help anyone, especially if muscle power was needed, and he never expected anything but a “thank you” in return (except maybe a cup of tea). He was an avid sports fan who loved the Toronto Blue Jays, the Montreal Canadiens, Tiger Woods and curling. I will never be able to watch those sports without remembering him. Many people have told me that he was a good curler and I regret that I never made the time to watch him curl. Thankfully, I did golf with him once or twice. Upon reflection, I realize that Roy was also a great teacher. He taught me how important it is to define someone by who they are and not what disability they have. He never let his disability become an inability or an excuse to not to try something. He taught me how to forgive people, for no matter how mean or rude they may have been to him, he excused their behaviour as just not understanding. He taught me how to face adversity and attack it head on rather than trying to run from it. He taught me how to live life with......

The Hero Cycle: Top Gun

...Where the Hero Cycle Begins If WW3 were to happen right now and you were drafted, would you want to fight as an individual or as a team? Teamwork is a valuable skill, perhaps even more important than individual technical skill. Top Gun shows the development of a fighter pilot as he makes this realization. Fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is one of the best at what he does, flying jets. Correspondingly, he has a big ego, disrespect for rules and authority, and extreme cockiness. These faults cause him to question what other people have to say about him. In return, he pushes other people away to make himself feel better and fit his ego. Because of this and how he tends to act, he can be considered an introvert. This combination makes him a dangerous partner. However, partially out of luck, he and his copilot Nick "Goose" Bradshaw are given the chance to go to Top Gun, a six week training program for the top 1% of fighter pilots. While there, Maverick is no longer the best - he has to prove his worth, by winning the Top Gun trophy. In the midst of the competition, Maverick and Goose lose control of their plane, resulting in an accident, killing Goose. Maverick then is forced to change his ways, and work for the greater good. This story is a classical example of the monomyth, with Maverick as its hero and Goose as his mentor. We claim that the critical piece of the hero’s cycle is at the beginning - in the transition from the known realm to the unknown - and that all of......
