You Can Find Emotional Tranquility and Wholeness

In this theory critique of The Anxiety Cure, Hart will provide strategies for dealing with anxiety. Hart has made a connection between the world of anxiety and stress and understanding the connection between anxiety and the effects anxiety has on our bodies. He also emphasized the importance of being aware of our bodies. Hart (2001) first explains how our brains natural tranquilizers are depleted through a combination of stress and high adrenaline. This combination set the stage for high anxiety (p. vi).
Anxiety is produced due to a lack of important brain chemical called neurotransmitters, Hart calls them “happy messengers” (p. 4). Hart (2001) explains how being stressed or over extended; our brains are deficient in these “happy messengers”. Examples of these include serotonin or noradrenalin. We also have “sad messengers” that carry somber messengers. Some examples of these include cortisol and enzymes (p. 20). Knowing how to balance or restoring the balance of these messages can help us better control our stress and anxiety. To balance these messengers we must set stress level limits and know when to disallow other to cross these limits (p.24). To restore these messengers can include temporarily taking anti-anxiety medication, and focusing on the stress in your life and discovering ways to make life changes (p. 24). He also explains how stress is connected to the overuse of the adrenal glands (p.5).
A mild form of anxiety is called a “panic attack” and the more severe from is called” panic anxiety disorder”. Hart (2001) discusses how anxiety falls into three categories which include physiological symptoms, cognitive symptoms, and emotional symptoms (p. 6). Axis IV the events in her life that has happened, such as death of her loved one could be the cause of this making her feel the way she does. I can relate to this because sometimes when my mom takes long shopping I get worried and think that something bad might had happen. Like if I hear a police car pass my house I get worried and feel like it is going toward someone I care about. Tina not being able to sleep at night is also another symptom. ...Critique of Classical Theory & The Rise of Keynesian Theory Classical Economic Theory Classical theory of economics states that a free market economy is self-regulating and that with full employment, the economy would reach equilibrium. The classical theory is fundamentally based on the Say's Law which states that "Supply creates its own Demand". This also made the classical economists believe that there was nothing to prevent an economy from growing and hence attaining a state of full employment. This would be achievable as long as employees are willing to work for a wage that was no more than their productivity and in this situation, the profit-seeking businesses would want to employ everyone. During a recession or a depression, the aggregate demand in the economy would fall and in the current price levels, consumption reduces and thus there would be an excess of goods in the market. Hart Critique

...Dr. Archibald D. Hart’s (1999) book, The Anxiety Cure, is a comprehensive work detailing the issues of stress, anxiety, and panic in adults, adolescents, and children. His goal is to help those who struggle with the after-effects of stress to find and maintain a balanced life of tranquility (p. 254). This critique explores Hart’s theoretical and theological approach, the strengths and weaknesses of this model, and this author’s plan to integrate information from the book into a personal theory of Christian counseling. Hart describes anxiety as “a disease of stress” that can result in a multitude of physical and emotional symptoms and illnesses (p. 139). They include panic and panic attacks, post traumatic stress disorder, adrenaline exhaustion, and obsessive compulsive disorder (p. 9-10) Anxiety strikes the strong and leaders among us, male and female, young and old, day or night (p. 37, 42). Anxiety is a warning to change our fast-paced, adrenaline pumping, stress-filled lifestyle (p. 3, 144-145). Scientific understanding of anxiety begins in the brain where neurotransmitters send information resulting in emotional responses (p. 19-20). ...Summary of Content Sandra Wilson’s theory of counseling is presented in her book Hurt People Hurt People. Wilson examines the role that a person’s development from childhood plays in their adult life. She explains that the truth that children accept about themselves carry over into adulthood and cause problems. In essence, Wilson argues that “what we live with, we learn, what we learn, we practice. What we practice, we become, and what we become has consequences” (Wilson 2001, 86). Children accept their identities from the reality they perceive from their parents (Wilson, 40). The failure to process the identity perceived from parents causes children to establish and reinforce unbiblical patterns of living that continue into adulthood, and eventually lead to the same result in the lives of their children (71). The key to correcting the problem is to make new choices based upon biblical truth that will result in new consequences that will change lives (87). Anderson seeks to reveal the why’s and how’s of spiritual warfare and exposes the many tricks Satan uses to take over the minds of many Christians. His tricks include outright lies, deception, and the lure of knowledge and power. Dr. Andersons approach differs greatly from the models we have studied previously in this class as he presents a theoretical model for overcoming negative thoughts, habitual sins and irrational feelings (Anderson, 2000). As well, Anderson seeks to clarify the nature of spiritual conflicts and offers a plan as to how they can be resolved through the power of Jesus name.
