Victor’s Last Wish
The short story chosen for the writing of this paper is “Victor’s Last Wish”. “Victor’s Last Wish” is a realistic fiction by Kris Jitab who describes in depth the pain and hardship endured by the main character, Vickramadas Gopal who was an Indian immigrant to Malaysia. Vickramadas was known as Victor throughout the short story. He made great efforts to transform himself to be like whites who he thought were the best. “Anything and everything related to the whites was beautiful to Vickramadas.” The author has painted a vivid picture of sufferings and challenges of Victor in his course to attain a new identity - an Englishman. But, his efforts did not help him to be recognised by the white men as a part of them. He was rejected by Miss Cunningham and insulted by Miss da Gama because his skin was dark in colour. He also thought that his failure to be promoted to Junior Accountant was due to his dark skin. Thus, Victor was so desperate to have his skin colour changed. He was very disappointed for not getting what he had striven so hard to achieve. As a result, he lost his hope and direction in his life. Consequently, he indulged in heavy smoking, drinking, gambling. At last, he became a thief to steal in order to pay his debt. In one stealing, he was caught red-handed together with his accomplices. He tried to escape but unfortunately, in his escape, he fell into a tank of formic acid where his skin was turned white all over by the acid. His wish to change his skin into white was therefore realised but ironically he had lost his life.
In this paper, two concepts of post colonial theory will be involved in the discussion of several issues and concerns raised by the author. The two concepts are mimicry and othering. Mimicry is best annotated through the main character, Vickramadas in the short story. He aspired to be an Englishman. He imitated the…...

...apartment. The story begins as Johnsy, near death from pneumonia, lies in bed waiting for the last leaf of an ivy vine on the brick wall she spies through her window to fall. Mr. Behrman, an old man who lives in the apartment below Sue and Johnsy, who enjoys drinking, works sometimes as an artist’s model, and as yet has made no progress over the past 40 years on painting his own masterpiece, becomes in typical authors fashion the hero. The evidence of his heroics is found the day before he dies from pneumonia. JOHNSY - She suffers from pneumonia in this story. Her wish for death and her dialogues reflect her disparity for life. - Her word has no direct relation with Sue’s question, which shows her state of mind, the blank mind. It’s a vivid description of a dying Johnsy. - With her actions and condition we were able to realize that we have hope and we must believe and have a faith. MR. BEHRMAN - Though the hero appears only once and speaks twice in the whole story but he, successfully reveals his affection to two young artists and his noble spirit. - Though he was hard in the outside, he was full of gentle feelings in heart. - His love towards Johnsy and Sue was fraternal or fatherly affections. SUE - Sue who is caring nursing, tolerating, through perseverance and gentleness. - Shows her fondness for her weak friend. - She does her duty as a concerned friend. II. SETTINGS The last leaf takes place in New York City. The largest city in America, the location of......

A Wish and a Dream

...A Wish and A Dream May 8, 2012 at 7:30am Whenever I make wishes there always the same, And there always in your name. Today I wished that I had one last day, To hear your voice, even if I don’t know what to say. It’s been 2 years since you died and I can’t recall your face, I can’t remember your loving embrace.   Whenever I close my eyes the flash backs hit me like a bad dream. The sound of the phone ringing, the crying on the other line, it was extreme. I recall my cousin’s voice, mumbling the words, I couldn’t fight the tears streaming down my cheek. The drive to the hospital felt like hours, My whole body felt numb and weak.   I close my eyes, and I can still see, My loved ones surrounding me. I’m pacing back and forth through the halls, Crying in bathroom stalls. My mind about to make the toughest choice, But I feel like I have no voice.   I can still hear the sound of your last breathe, The painful sound of death. The rise and fall of your chest, Wishing god would put you to rest.   I did not let you go alone; I was with you till the end. And for that my heart can never mend. And just when I thought you had gone, you’d gasp for air. I held your hand, I told you I loved you, and I sat in that chair.   When it was all over, I ran to brother’s side, I just wanted to curl up and hide.   Last night I dreamed of the night you died, I jerked awake so fast and cried. I held my head in shame, Feeling like I was to blame.   Every time I......

Last Samurai

...The Last Samurai – Traditional and Modern Economies A traditional economy is an economic system that relies on a strong social network and is based on primitive methods and tools, whereas a modern economy relies on production, exchange, distribution, and consumption of goods. In the film, The Last Samurai, western Japan fights against the rebelling Samurai who do not wish to modernize and rid of their traditions. The vast differences between a traditional and modern economy are shown throughout the film as both civilizations express different means of production, military capabilities and cultural values. The reign of Emperor Meiji was one of the most revolutionary eras in Japanese history as Japan underwent dramatic changes in its government, economy, and culture. The nation opened its doors to the west and embraced a new world of cultural influences. Japan was transformed into an agrarian society with an industrialized economy and a strict military regime. Revolutionized Japan created modern weaponry such as guns and automatic weapons that were made in industrial factories. Instead of carrying goods using horses, Japan modernized using wagons and trains which made transportation of goods more rapid and efficient. In the film, we can see the paved streets and buildings of western Japan, the use of modern clothing, and advanced military technology. Conversely, the Samurai represent a traditional economy by their use of weapons, transportation, and......

Victor's Last Wish

...ACTIVE LOG WEEK 3 Stronge once has claimed in the year of 2007 that an effective teacher plans, prepares and gives great emphasis for the organization and management of a classroom. As proposed by him, I realize that how important for a teacher trainee like me to learn how to manage a classroom. In my opinion, I think that classroom management is like coaching a football team. The teacher who is the coach needs to develop a mutual understanding and commitment with the students in order to deliver and empower them with effective teaching and learning process. This also ultimately reflects my personal teaching philosophy which is to engage in the student’s learning and inspires them internally. In order to make my personal philosophy a success, as a future teacher I will be very strict in my ways to produce successful learners who upholds the school’s name which also football coach needs to uphold his countries name by winning as many games as his team could. I will engage with my students by teaching and imposing them with the correct ways of learning and asked them to stick to what I have taught so that they won’t be on the wrong side and we can work together and achieve tone of successes. Furthermore, as a future teacher I will deliberately use the legitimate power that I will have and engage with my student as a form of authority that need to be followed and considered during the teaching and learning process as I’m the teacher and I know what best for my students. I......

Make a Wish

... well as much as we like the idea it is not going to happen. We have children who are suffering from life- threatening illnesses who do not have a chance to be a kid or to grow up with the memories of childhood. We try all we can as parents and family to keep our children safe we just can not perdict a child getting a life threating illness, we do all we can to make our child happy while going through a scary ordeal. If we can make one dream come true for a sick child for one day of forgetting they are staring down a life threatening illness and make that child laugh wouldn't giving that child a wish come true be amazing? The social program I am creating is a program to help a child who is terminally ill or has a life threatening illness called “Dreams Come True.” A dream come True program would for one day grant sa wish one child makes come true. To make this happen I would need to set up the program, find donors and volunteers, financing to help the wishes come true. Advances in medicine and modern technonogy have increased the survival rate in children with chronic illness, including illnessess that were considered fatal (Cohen,1995).Witnessing the child's pain and fear, combined with the constant fear of death makes it difficult for the family to function normally and plan for the future (Haas, 1990; Rolland, 1994; Sloper, 2000). Literature on the differential impact of the child's chronic illness on......

The Two Wish Genie

...I start my sunny morning as usual with a steamy cup of coffee but something seemed odd about the mug I grabbed. I was holding it in my hand as I examined it for a few seconds; then is started shaking slightly. All of a sudden the shaking kept getting harder and faster till I see it start smoking. Then I see some kind of genie pop out of my coffee cup. I can tell shes a genie by the funny clothes she has on. She looks at me, smiles, and says that she is here to grant me two wishes. One wish has to be personal but the second one has to be on the behalf of others. I think about my wishes for just a few seconds then they both come to mind. My first wish is my personal wish. I wish that I would win the lottery. Not only win for myself but also for my parents so I could pay them back for everything they’ve done for me. Also I could give some of the money I would win to charities. Also I could use the money for starving kids in other countries. That brings me to my second wish. I would wish that I could stop world hunger. As I say that, the genie looks straight at me and says that she is going to grant both of my wishes. As she says that I’m wondering in my mind why this genie chose me. Why is she giving me the two wishes? I’m not sure if I’ve done anything good in my life so if she actually does grant my wishes then I would become a better person. The genie starts to close her eyes and lifting her arms up in the air. I feel as if the world stopped moving. Then all of a sudden...

I Wish

...I Wish..I May..I Wish..I Might I wish that clock went slower, paused, or could rewind I wish my heart wasn’t at the mercy of the hands of time I wish I could go back and tell myself what I know now I wish there was a book for me to understanding how I may be a good mother, or do at least my best I may have given all I had, and sacrificed the rest I may have loved with what I could, the outcome still is blind I maybe should have tried to change, not the other’s flaws, but mine I wish I had let God lead me, much earlier than this I wish I moved out of my own way, I may have already found bliss I wish I had learned from my mistakes, just as I had thought I wish I just listened and remembered, I know now what I forgot I might have had a smile on, it didn’t hinder me I might have laughed, and justified, it was easy to believe I might have been as strong as a rock, unbreakable, hard headed I might have played it really well, I might have just pretended I wish….I may….I wish…..I might….Have the wish, I wish tonight But wishing never got us moving forward in this life So raise a glass, let’s make a toast to the past that we can see I choose my future, and vow to make the change I need in me. -Kaitlyn Marie...

The Last

...Benjamin Lucas COMM240 – Interpersonal Paper The Last I recall a brightly lit room on a Sunday morning, as I kissed her on the forehead, “I love you…” Slowly she opened her eyes and as she sat next to me, “Hey… Um… How many were there before me?” she asked. “Like, how many girls did you love before me?” “Love? Five…” I stated. “I loved five women before you.” The disappointment in her eyes after a sigh, though she smiled… “What are their names?” “…Who, What, When, Where, Why…” I said to her. “Can you tell me about them?” “Who I loved, was a girl from college. I wasn’t exactly close to her, but with some superficial facts and a few interactions over a semester, you know, like most guys fantasizing over girls they barely know, I filled in the blanks like a fairytale author. And who she became in my head was probably more than the reality. She was a third year, sorority girl, and yeah, I was an infatuated freshman, sure, but the several times you get to spend together outside of class… It really allowed me to see, she also had a good heart and a bright spirit. The only problem was, so did just about every other guy. And while she turned me down nicely, I swear… There were times when it seemed like the cliché sorority girl may have felt something for the typical awkward freshman.” “What I loved, was an old friend, but she was more than just a friend. We met early in college and kept in touch through the years. We saw each other grow, and change...

The Last Leaf

... All these characteristics of a good short story are fulfilled in the short story of O Henry’s The Last Leaf. It has an ironical twist at the end that is surprising and at the same time striking to the readers. Old Behrman’s bold self sacrifice for the young Johnsy comes unexpectedly to the readers, but none the less convincing and admirable. The story if farther a parable of christian story of Resurrection and sacrifice.  The story begins in a leisurely manner with the sketchy background. The old Greenwich village in which painters come to set up their art studio has curious maze streets criss-crossing one another. A traveler loses the directions of the streets. This description of the streets has relevance to the story in which a strong and strange psychological morbidity is focused. The main theme is then introduced it has two characters – Sue and Johnsy. They met together suddenly at a hotel and found themselves sharing taste chicory salad, bishop sleeves and in painting. They become intimate friends and in a cheap rented house two friends Sue and Johnsy set up a common studio. The humours beginning arrest the attention of the readers and relive the tension that awaits them.                 After a serio-comic introduction comes the central situation. One day Johnsy is attacked with pneumonia. She becomes gradually weak in body and mind. She is possessed with death wish. There is an ivy vine on the yard near the Johnsy’s window. She looks at the window and counts the...

A Final Wish of Death

...A Final Wish of Death A final wish of death should be granted when life has come to its last chapter and all that is sought is a peaceful passing. The decision between a physician and terminally ill patient to hasten their death should be accepted and granted. A terminal illness can be described as an incurable disease which will end the life of the sufferer. If death is inevitable, why must we wait for natural causes to occur? Physician-assisted deaths should be legalized in all states so that the terminally ill can request a final act of dignity. “Physician-assisted death is defined as the physician providing the means for death, most often with a prescription. The patient not the physician will ultimately administer the lethal medication” (Braddock & Tonelli, 1998). If a patient can come to a decision when it is time to stop treatment for their terminal illness, they should also be allowed to choose when to bring death. End of life care has become an equally important issue to physicians as well as the patients. If physician-assisted deaths were permitted in all 50 states, physicians could openly discuss end of life wishes with their patients. With all the advances in modern medicine, people are living much longer which allows for a higher risk in developing a terminal illness. A few examples of terminal illnesses are cancer, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, renal failure, and heart failure. With increasing numbers in terminal......
