Where Did You Get Your Morals From?

Morals, this is something that is supposed to define the actions, perceptions, and persuasion of the human existence. Google defines morality as principles concerning the distinction between good or bad and right or wrong. I do believe that some types of morality come at a standard in human nature, but to only select people. For the majority it’s a combination of what was instilled through parenting and what we acquired through our own observations in growing and learning. Growing up, there were several family members that helped raised me. Like all parental figures in our life there are some lessons and morals that were taken from those family members. The majority of morals that I have acquired, derived from my grandmother, grandfather, uncle and mom. There are also morals that I have acquired from living and observing actions and results, in which I am still learning. We had steps, rules, and procedures that needed to be followed during throughout the household. They started from the way that we spoke down to what could be touched during different times of the day. The parental figures set a lot of rules and standards in our household. Foods needed to match the time of the day. Such as; cereals and eggs in the morning, sandwiches for lunch, and whatever was cooked in the evening was for dinner. For the kids permission had to be requested to go outside and the destination or area of play had to be stated so that they were aware of our locations at all times. If there were guest visiting it was the obligation of the resident to speak to the guest, not the other way around (I hated that). The only thing that I did like is that we didn’t have to say “sir or mam”, because it made them feel old. A lot of people were raised on please and thank you. It was drilled to until the age of 5 years old, but it was…...

Where Are You Going Where Have You Been

...How many young girls do you know who have had their innocence taken from them? A fifteen year old girl named Connie is forced to grow up entirely too fast by a man named Arnold Friend. Without meaning any harm, she flaunts herself around town acting like a mature woman, showing the world she thinks she ready to grow up. Joyce Carol Oates’s short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” illustrates how evil and manipulative one man is to a not so innocent Connie. Although Connie thinks she wants her independence as a woman, Arnold Friend, who is not who he seems to be, destroys her youthful innocence and introduces her to a world of evil. Connie begins to find independence in her appearance. She is constantly admiring herself in the mirror and being scolded for it by her mother. She tries to make herself sexually attractive in search of her own independence (SparkNotes Web). Connie goes out with her friends and flaunts her beauty and body, making herself look interested in older men; she thinks she is doing no harm when she is flirting. Like most teenagers, Connie wants to express her independence by going places alone with her friends. Being only fifteen, she is not able to drive, so she is dependent on the older people in her life. Connie is resentful of not having her full independence, but her family and friends constitute as the only life she knows. While Connie believes she is only making herself look older in order to appear beautiful, she is actually luring......

Where Are You Going and Where Have You Been?

...Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? In the story “Where are you going, where have you been” by Joyce Oates is about a beautiful young girl, Connie, that is trying to grow up too fast. She obsesses over her looks, friends, music, and day dreams about boys all day. She gets great pleasure in the fact that many boys of all ages find her very attractive. This though gets her in a lot of trouble with a boy name Arnold. This boy puts on a fake façade to get Connie to come to him. He manipulates her and deceives her. Arnold friend could also be interpreted as “Arch fiend” suggesting that he may be the devil. Many things that the author Joyce suggest leads the reader to believe that he may be the devil. For one his pale skin and his hair is wild, almost as though he is wearing a wig and hiding some horns underneath. When he walks he wobbles almost suggesting that he may have hooves as feet, just like the devil. Demon or not, however, his strangely mismatched appearance adds to the threatening quality of his calm voice and seemingly gentle coaxing as he tries to convince Connie to come outside. Connie at first is strangely attracted to Arnold in a very dangerous way. He is a very attractive, sexy older man that is showing some interest in her. He is also very alluring to her. Something about him keeps her interested. He offers to take her away from her very unhappy life and give her a better one in a field with flowers and sunshine. Soon though he beings to make threats and......

...landslides and sometimes by volcanic eruption. Most commonly they are caused by earthquakes that causes disturbance below the ocean floor as they occur. This further moves water up to the surface creating large waves. These large waves are hundred of feet high and are known as tsunami. In the middle of the sea these waves are not that large but as they approach the shores they get very dangerous and cause great chaos to the land and its inhabitants. A tsunami is capable of destroying anything that comes on its way including buildings, trees, homes of people, trucks and cars and even telephone lines (Bryant). As there are different causes, there are different ways how a tsunami is made. When an earthquake takes place below the ocean floor it causes tectonic plates to flow against each other causing instability on the sea levels and creating large waves as an effect. Sometimes earthquakes also create landslides that in result can cause tsunami as the remains from landslides can cause water to move. Volcanoes can also explode underneath the sea. If that happen it causes a sudden gush of wave to move upwards in form of large waves (Bryant). The World’s most devastating tsunamis are the ones that occurred in Lisbon (Portugal), Sanriku (Japan), Messina (Italy), South Chile, Izmit Bay (Turkey) and the tsunami in the Indian Ocean (Bryant). The tsunami at Lisbon took place in 1775 measuring to a magnitude of 9 on a Richter scale. In total there were three earthquakes that caused......

A Competitor Firm Has Outsourced Its Production Abroad. You Could Do the Same. You Are the Major Employer in the Town Where You Are Located. You Have to Decide Whether Also to Outsource Your Production

...Good Business Bad Business and Sustainability The coursework is to complete a discussion of an organisation, policy, or product and evaluate the ways in which the object could be regarded as ‘good’, and ‘bad’. You may choose a specific case to evaluate; or build a hypothetical case using suitable real world examples. A competitor firm has outsourced its production abroad. You could do the same. You are the major employer in the town where you are located. You have to decide whether also to outsource your production. Introduction The industry that my firm operates within is the winter clothing industry. The company supplies clothing to multiple clothing retailers across the U.K and selected areas of Europe mostly around the French and Swiss Alps. The company’s factory is based in Brackley and employs 2500 local employees. Our company has a strong ethical and moral feel and image due to a strong involvement in charity fund raising and organising events for under privileged children to get involved in sports and activities they wouldn’t usually have the opportunity to do. We are seen locally as an incremental part of the local infrastructure and through feedback sheets its apparent that on the whole our employees are happy and our staff turnover and productivity reflects this. The main issue we have recently encountered is that in October 2011 the minimum wage went up 15p to £6.08 an hour therefore increasing the cost of labour and due to the rise in oil prices to...

Where Have You Been Where Are You Going

...place or thing that is sending this sign. In the short story, "Where have you been, where are you going?"  By Joan Carol Oates, Connie is the main character. Connie seems to con herself, for example, she met a guy named Arnold Friend at a restaurant and he shows up at her house one Sunday afternoon. Connie at first does not know who it is and then once she realizes who it is, she does not go straight out of the door with him, it takes her a while to actually goes off with him. “She pretended to fidget, chasing flies away from the door” (208). Her(Connie) name goes along with her personality great and this situation.   Where they first met, the restaurant is shaped like an old church and the background music is like that of a church sermon (206). The author uses this as a sign from God to Connie to warn her about Arnold but she does not realize it. It does not even dong on her that what’s really going on. In reality, Arnold is trying to figure out who Connie really is.   Later on, Oates describes how Arnold is dressed with great detail. A mask, dark clothes, and items stuffed into his boots to make him look taller. The way he is describing, it’s a little weird and creepy. “Tight faded jeans stuffed into black scuffed boots, a belt that pulled his waist in…”(208). I believe that Arnold is some sort of the devil, Satan. In the text, on page 208, it talks of the way he tries to con Connie into coming with her. “ You wanta come for a ride?, don’tcha like my car? New paint......

Did You Bring Your Ethics to Work Today?

...Did you bring your ethics to work today? Think you are a person of integrity and that you bring your highest standards of ethics to your workplace each day? Despite hundreds of pages of policies, codes of ethics, codes of conduct, organizational values, and carefully defined work environments, company cultures, lapses in workplace ethics occur every day. Lapses in workplace ethics result from inappropriate officer behavior such as insider stock trading, expense account fraud, sexual harassment, and involvement in conflicts of interest. Lapses in workplace ethics do not need to rise to that level to impact the workplace environment you provide for employees though. Lapses in workplace ethics can occur because of simple issues such as toilet paper, copy machines, and lunch signup lists. In a nationally important workplace ethics case, Hewlett-Packard company's, successful CEO, Mark Hurd, (now former H-P CEO), became embroiled in workplace ethics issues. I have no insider knowledge, but the public statement from the company indicated that Mr. Hurd left because he violated the company’s expected standards of conduct. Cathie Lesjak, H-P's chief financial officer, who was appointed interim CEO until the company can find a permanent replacement for Mr. Hurd, asked employees “to remain ‘focused’ and said ‘Mark had failed to disclose a close personal relationship he had with the contractor that constituted a conflict of interest, failed to maintain accurate expense reports,...

Where Are You Going Where Have You Been.

...Symbolism of “Screen Door” “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” by Joyce Carol Oates, is packed with symbols that are very important to the meaning of the short story. There are several important symbols in the story that eventually leads up to Connie’s decision to give herself to Arnold. One of the crucial symbols in “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” is the screen door of Connie’s house. The screen door symbolizes Connie's transition from a teenager to a mature woman that is accepting her fate. Throughout the story Connie is scared to open the door and go outside, the closest she gets is when the boys first pull up and she “hung[s] out the screen door, [with] her toes curling down off the step” (Oates 508). Connie knows that Arnold won’t come in the house because he tells her several times, “I’m not coming in that house after you” (Oates 513). So in a way she feels comforted by the screen door that is separating them. The screen door is a boundary between Connie and Arnold, Connie stands inside the house as Arnold stands on the front porch with his arms open. If Connie opens the screen door to go out with Arnold she is excepting her fate but if she keeps the screen door shut and stays inside, she remains the fearful young teenager who is not ready to leave. By the end of the story Connie has made up her mind, “She put her hand against the screen door. She watched herself push the door slowly open as if she were safe back somewhere in the other doorway,...

...“Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” Summary In the short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” author Joyce Carol Oates presents the main character a fifteen year old girl named Connie who’s life is all about being pretty. Connie all ways casted two sides to herself. Her appearance and mannerisms would be displayed one way at home with her family, and entirely different when she was not. Often Connie and her friends would go to a shopping plaza, although they would wander across to a drive-in restaurant, which was a hangout for many of the adolescents. There one night Connie caught the eye of a boy with black hair in a gold convertible. The next day Connie was home alone, while her family was at a barbeque when she heard someone pulling into her driveway. She looked out the window to find that it was the boy with the black hair and gold convertible, which she had seen the prior night. She went to the screen door where the black hair boy approached her. He introduced himself as Arnold Friend and invites her to go for a ride. ...CheckPoint: Knowing Where You Placed Your Document By: Juan C. Unfortunately this is cause for misplaced documents when trying to locate them at a later date. Thankfully, there are many helpful ways to locate recently saved documents. My considered-second family, The Morrings, had came to get me in the early afternoon to go on a 2-3 hour drive to get my sister Terraé her new puppy to cure the mourning for her recently lost one. I climbed into the third section of the run down 2014 jet black Tahoe, Ms.Morring in the driver seat, family friend Tanisha in the passenger, Tanisha’s daughter and our friend Darius in the second section, and me and Terraé in the third. The car ride was full of laughter and sing-a-longs with plenty of freeway until we finally got off, although we still had plenty of ground to cover. There was farm after farm, cow after cow and so many different roadside stands selling either fruits, vegetables or pies. It was obvious we were in the countryside part of Ohio by now. We even passed by an outside go-kart place that we all started making plans to come back to before the summer was over. It still took about thirty minutes to get to the house where the woman we were getting the puppy from lived, but once pulling up in the driveway and opening the door, we were bumrushed with the tiniest puppies and kittens any of us had laid our eyes on. We were greeted by a short, Caucasian lady named Amber, who told us that Terraé could pick whatever puppy her heart desired. After about five minutes of looking around, she made a connection with Bubbles, the runt of a litter of Yorkie......

...born in the U.S. they had both faced segregation and discrimination, but both had different approaches on how to go about fixing these problems.     Washington was born as a slave in Virginia. Although he had worked as a slave, he was determined to receive and education. Later in life, he was one of the most influential men for black rights and had founded Tuskegee University in Alabama. He believed that black people had to accomodate to the white people to receive respect and rights for his race; to be an accommodationist. His most famous speech "The Atlanta Compromise" had been a staple of his beliefs; 'Cast down your bucket where you are,' work behind the scenes, adjust to segregation, and abondon agitation. "It was about black people working but on white peoples terms" (Rivalry, 1:42).     One of those ways to 'accomodate' was for African Americans to get an education in agricultural farming. To learn normal farming skills rather than trying to become a doctor or lawyer. When Plessy V. Ferguson had deemed segregation constitutional the ruling "reinforced Washington's view that African Americans had best concentrate on economic progress, not legal and political equality. Frugality, intergrity, and job skills... would bring success in the only areas in which black Americans could control their destiny" (Carson, 326). Although Washington had been an accommodationist, when he died it was revealed that he had "secretly contributed to efforts challenging grandfather......

Did Your Mom Ever Tell You Not to Pet Stray Dogs?

...Did your mom ever tell you to not pet stray dogs? Well mine did of course, and I listened just as well as any 4 year old would. I was a very hard headed kid at that age, and I never listened to what I was told. We lived in a small town 200 miles west of Middlin, Texas; it was a quiet town with a population around 1,000 people. If you’ve ever been to Texas then you know that it’s about 90% desert, it’s a dry and dusty place. Stray dogs are everywhere be aware and whatever you do don’t pet stray dogs. It was the summer of 1991 in Middlen, Texas the temperature was around 100 degrees. I was soaked from head to toe with sweat from ridding my dirt bike all day. I had gotten a 50cc Suzuki dirt bike from my dad just a year prior and I was loving it. I rode my dirt bike all summer long that year. There was a pit not too far from my house that I could ride in that had some whoop-de-woops, and some jumps. This pit was huge, I mean it was a giant pit, it looked like a comet had struck the earth it was so big. I spent what seemed to be all day at the pit riding my dirt bike. When I finally got home I decided to cool off in the sprinklers, I ran into the house as fast as I possibly could to change clothes. As I got into the house I yelled Mom! Can I go outside and play in the sprinkler, she said yes but I had to eat supper first Dang it, I said under my breath as I continued down the long hallway. When I got to my room I looked everywhere for my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles swimming...
