Marshall Islands Scholarship
Grant and Loan Board

Dear Board of Directors,

I do believe with all my heart and soul that education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the course of our young nation to a better and brighter future. It is quite a disappointment to witness that more Marshallese students have stopped dreaming big. As I am writing this statement I’m witnessing Marshallese students graduating from American High Schools with close to zero interest of dreaming on going to college and getting a Bachelor, a Master degree, or even a Doctorate degree. I believe dreaming big and finishing college are an irreplaceable part of our lives, and the role that good education plays on the personal growth of our young citizens and the future growth of our small country, is a remarkable one.

I am writing to you to let you know that I am one of those Marshallese out there who still has a burning desire after graduating four-year college to continue on and earn a Master degree in Business Administration. I have been accepted to Keller Graduate School of Management at DeVry University. I am confident that I will make it, but I will need the full financial support of your board of directors if I am going to get an MBA. Like Benjamin Franklin once said ‘An Investment in knowledge pays the best interest’. I can guarantee the Marshall Islands board of directors that once I get my MBA I will be back and be an asset to our country.

I have done it before with my undergraduate degree and you can bid I will do it again. Getting an MBA is not going to be easy, but I will give it all I have to push through the end. I am convinced the bright future of our young nation is in the hand of our educated young leaders and scholars.

When I first wrote to the Marshall Islands Scholarship board of directors…...

...Why Should I Get an MBA? Jane Doe University of Phoenix: MGT/521 October 11, 2012 Joseph Mason The definition of MBA according to Wikipedia (2012) is the following: Master of Business Administration (MBA or M.B.A.) is a master's degree in business administration, which attracts people from a wide range of academic disciplines. The MBA designation originated in the United States, emerging from the late 19th century as the country industrialized and companies sought out scientific approaches to management. The core courses in the MBA program are designed to introduce students to the various areas of business such as accounting, finance, marketing, human resources, operations management, etc. Students in MBA programs have the option of taking general business courses throughout the program or can select an area of concentration and focus approximately one-fourth of their studies in this subject (“Wikipedia”, 2012). Accreditation bodies exist specifically for MBA programs to ensure consistency and quality of graduate business education. Business schools in many countries offer MBA programs tailored to full-time, part-time, executive, and distance learning students, with specialized concentrations (“Wikipedia”, 2012). I asked myself a series of questions of “Why should I get an MBA”? I took a systemic approach by addressing all the pro’s and cons of having an MBA. First, the pros of an MBA give......

Why I Want to Be a Teacher

...is something that I want to experience. All throughout high school, working with children had always been my dream. Through summer jobs, having younger cousins, and babysitting, I have been around children all of my life. I knew when I came to college that I wanted to do something that involved children. I started off majoring in Occupational Therapy my freshman year. I was planning on specializing in pediatrics, but then I realized I couldn’t see myself being an Occupational Therapist for the rest of my life. I now know that I want to be a teacher in the future. Working in a classroom setting with children and being able to teach them every day sounds so rewarding. I want to be able to make a difference in their lives. I want to be able to praise them when they do something good, and teach them when they do something wrong. I want to show them things and know that they learned something when they walk out of my classroom. I want to hang their accomplishments on the wall in the classroom and look at it when I walk in each day. I want the children to be able to feel comfortable enough with me to be able to participate and open up, but not too comfortable where they take advantage of me. I want to be a teacher because I know it is what I am going to love to do for the rest of my life. I will want to wake up every day and go to work to teach the children something new. I want to be able to put a smile on their face and love what I do for the rest of my life. I feel that being......

Why I Want to Be a Nurse

...supporting tissue of the body and provides a framework for most of the body’s tissue. Bones derive from mesenchyme, the process for their formation or ossification (Knight et al, 2003). Knight et al (2003) states after ossification, immature bone grow and is continuously remodelled by osteoclasts and osteoblasts until it is mature. Repair is by bone forming cells called osteoblasts. Osteoblasts is constantly forming and taking up calcium from the blood and bind it into substance of bone, calcium gives strength to bones, although osteoclasts assist in the break down of bone to prevent excessive bone growth. The development of bone is controlled by hormones, growth hormones, thyroid hormones and sex hormones (Marieb, 2003). However, when cells get old and their pace becomes slower there can be build up of calcification, which is a lack of calcium which adds strength to the bones, leading to osteoporosis. A loss of calcium may occur through urine, faeces and sweat, leading to the conclusion that more is being lost than absorbed through diet. Griffin (1990) defines osteoporosis as a reduction in both the amount and strength of bone tissue sufficient to result in the affected part or parts of the skeleton being abnormally susceptible to fracture, the reason being, bones become porous due to loss of bone density. Bone in older people has a thinner out layer that lacks strength. The inner spongy bone is more porous, and contains fewer blood vessels and less calcium. ......

Why I Want to Be a Nurse

...I remember it like it was yesterday. The squeaky white floors, and how I had to stand on my “tippy toes” to see through the glass. In that room on the other side of the glass was what felt like hundreds of babies, new babies that had only been in this world for a so short of a time. I knew I wanted to be one of the “angels” caring for them. My sister was a preemie, born 9 weeks early, so the family spent a lot of time in the hospital with her. In the following weeks and months, I witnessed nurses staying not only at this tiny infant's side, but the family's also as she was hooked up to yet another tube. These nurses went above their required duties and cared for my sister and family not only physically, but emotionally and mentally. The nurses, far more than any doctor, were our support system. I, at that young age, would ask them my questions about what was to happen, and with patience and knowledge, they answered me with such care. Being such an intimate witness to the struggle of life and death left me with a deep sense of human fragility. I realized that the human body is so very intricate and beautiful in its complex delicacy. Witnessing a nurse's holistic role for the patient embedded deeper in me that I had a calling to serve others in the medical field, specifically in the field of children. Ecclesiastes 3:1 states that every endeavor man can undertake has its own time and meaning. Looking back on my own life, I see various experiences and opportunities of growth......

...{text:bookmark-start} Why I Decided to Pursue MBA Degree {text:bookmark-end} In a world with growing population and ever increasing competition among humans for limited resources a person needs to stand out with polishedskills and education. I strongly believe that pursuing an MBA degree will open more doors of opportunity, enhance myself confidence and will give me advantage in getting a desired job. As an graduate in medical sciences, I started my career as clinical research coordinator which is a challenging position in medical research. During one year of experience in the health care research program, I dealt with different pharmaceutical companies, their managers and researchers. Most part of my job was to take care of research documents and get approval for different studies from international revenue board (IRB). During that job I explored, that I need to improve my communication and interpersonal skills to improve my public dealing skills. After gaining one year of experience in cancer research, I joined a cancer research center and got my experience in cancer abstracting and coding in cancer registry. Here I once again dealt with different doctors’ offices, their office record and medical data.. I felt that just medical knowledge is not sufficient to fulfill the requirements of my job, I felt the need to increase my knowledge in project management and resource planning in order to efficiently deal well with business aspects of my job. Moreover, better......

Why I Pursue Mba Program

...to Pursue an MBA Degree Getting an MBA degree has always been my goal after finishing my first degree in Business Administration. MBA degree will help me in clarifying my strengths; therefore, giving me the opportunity to focus more. I also believe that people that have their MBA degree make more money than those with first degree in the long run. Being in MBA program opens up opportunities to network with fellow students, which may eventually land one a very good job opportunity. An MBA degree holder is always been looked at as someone who is experienced and skilled in their chosen profession; therefore, commanding more respect from others. Having done my Jungian 16-type personality assessment, my personality result is ENTP. ENTP means: Extrovert, Intuitive, Thinking and Perceiving. A person with “ENTP personality is innovative, individualistic, versatile, and entrepreneurial. Possible career as politician, strategic planner, literary agent, publicist, entrepreneur, investment broker, computer analyst and ad executive.” (Personality Inventory, 1989). This assessment gives me clearer vision of what I may likely pursue in my MBA program. I always see myself as an entrepreneur based on my personality; entrepreneurial, innovative and someone who likes to help the public. Based on my Jungian 16-type personality result, I will develop my interests and skills towards my personality type, so as to benefit from my potentials. Aside from the above mentioned points, MBA degree......

Why I Want to Become a Mba Student

...Why I am a great Master’s degree candidate and my plans for my degree I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and joined Paulo Products after a brief stint in the field of metallurgy. I want to arm myself with a Master’s degree in Business Administration from American University and use it to focus on my career by adding a financial and marketing perspective to my engineering background. I see myself teaming up with different professionals to collaborate and guide each other by utilizing our prior work and educational experiences. I also envision absorbing knowledge from the class room, faculty, fellow participants, and the various industry linkages to make diverse study groups successful team ventures. Given my background, I tend to lean towards the manufacturing side of business. In today’s rapidly changing landscape, I will be able to help my classmates understand the metalworking and manufacturing assembly challenges faced by employers, and as a group, endeavor to identify solutions that promote sustainable economic growth in the industrial market. At American University, I hope to be able to find fellow students equally passionate on the topic of development; together we would create a dynamic team. Although I have the technical experience necessary to accomplish my personal goals, I still feel I need to develop the practical business knowledge that a Master’s degree in Business Administration would provide in order to execute my short-term......

Why I Got My Mba

...Week 2 Individual Paper I decided to get my MBA for several reason. I wanted to set an example for my kids, for my own personal goals, and I want to be a dean to a college one day. I plan on getting my PHD in education. I am determined to reach my goals. “Etymologically the word education contains educare (Latin) "bring up", which is related to educere "bring out", "bring forth what is within", "bring out potential" and ducere, "to lead". (Etymonline.com). Getting my MBA will only bring out my full potential. I will be more knowledgeable, and knowledge is power. I am a single mother of three. “Education in the largest sense is any act or experience that has a formative effect on the mind, character or physical ability of an individual. In its technical sense, education is the process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another” (Wikipedia.com). I want my kids to see me working, getting my degree, and taking care of them. As I quoted “…transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills, and values from generation to another” (Wikipedia.com). What I do will transmit to them. I want them to know that it can be done. There is nothing they can not achieve if they really want it. When my kids reach the college level, there will no excuse big enough for them not to complete college. I am leading by example. I was attacked in my home in 2008. My kids and myself were sleeping when a man came in an attacked......

Why I Want to Be a Teacher

...Professional football players all have in common? They are all dream careers commonly listed by elementary school students. When I was in fifth grade I remember coming home and informing my grandmother that when I grew up I was going to be a teacher. As many parents do she responded by asking me why, I enthusiastically responded “I want to be just like Mrs. Higginbotham and teach people words like nincompoop!” To this day I have not changed my mind. My reasons have matured from being astonished by vocabulary but my goal hasn’t. In hindsight I always liked to teach. I was the oldest sibling and turned our hallway into a classroom. When I was older I loved tutoring younger children. I was largely inspired by Mrs. Higginbotham. She taught me many things. She showed me learning could be fun. She taught me that no goal was unattainable. She created a lifelong interest in literature. As a teacher she tried to find something for everyone, even those students who already claimed they hated school. I wanted to be able to create the type of learning environment that she did for other children. As I grew I had other significant teachers who helped me cement the idea that I wanted to be an elementary school teacher. In high school I realized that all the teacher I considered truly good teachers had all the skills I wanted to learn. I wanted to be able to inspire students and work with them like many of my own educators had with me. The best teachers were good at...

Why I Want to Teach

...of image they want to imprint on their students. Growing up I have had many teachers, some have left good and bad experiences in my life that has ultimately brought me to where I am today. “John Dewey was possibly the most influential educator of the twentieth century and probably the most controversial one”(Sadker &Zittleman 2010). I believe in being a progressive teacher in that I want to see my students at any skill level continue to improve. As a progressive teacher I will have 3 main goals: to inspire, grow and groom individuality into each student under my care in the classroom. I will a teacher whose image will never be forgotten and whose tenacity for education is never questioned. I believe that, if possible, every child no matter the age or ethnic background should be treated as an Individual in the classroom. In my own personal experiences being a student I have seen how even in a college setting the connection a teacher or professor can have with a student one on one is much more satisfying than a teacher who just teaches a class. Education, according to John Dewey, is the “participation of the individual in the social consciousness of the race” (Dewey, 1897). As such, education should take into account that the student is a social being. The process begins at birth with the child unconsciously gaining knowledge and gradually developing their knowledge to share and partake in society. Furthermore, in my educative journey with my students I want them to be......

Why I Want to Become a Doctor

...applying to HPREP because i’m very interested in becoming a doctor. I’m not exactly sure what aspect of the medical field I want to study in but I certainly see myself practicing medicine. I hope to gain greater knowledge in medical courses because this would help me in my second semester of high school since I will be doing the Rasmussen program at my school. Which is basically taking science courses online to get a Practical Nursing Diploma. I was accepted to Knox College and i’m planning to go there to major in biology. This college is about four hours away from home and it’s definitely a new environment and new people. This program will definately help me with networking and making the transition from high school to college easier and smoother. Going to an actual University to take medical lessons would give the opportunity to feel like a college student before going to college. What i’m most excited about this program is the opportunity to have mentorship relationships with medical students and doctors; it’s a great opportunity for me to know how medical school is like and to get mentorship in how I show approach it. I’m hoping to figure out what aspect of the medical field I want to study in because I really want to find something that inspires and excites me. I’m thrilled with the opportunities that this program is affording; it will give me the confidence I need to start my college education at Knox College....

...the many benefits that are attached to an education, I chose to continue my education so that my children will have a chance to fair well in tomorrow’s society. Setting the example is a start, but building a repertoire of tools that help in the development of my children and enhance our lifestyle is what my pursuit of a graduate degree is all about. It is undoubtedly that today's world it much more competitive than it was before. These days, even with a Bachelor's degree, most people still struggle to find a career that suits their interests. I believe Masters of Business Administration program is one that provides an opportunity for students to learn and to work hard in a setting that will grow qualities essential to success in the business. Why I Decided to Get an Mba Degree

...Brian Fansler MBA: Why I decided to get an MBA degree Receiving my Undergraduate degree was one of my most proud moments in my life, I felt a since of accomplishment, responsibility, and acceptance. I just knew I was going to now be able to provide better for my family. That is why everyone around me said goes to college. Finish and graduate. A college degree can only help you and not hurt you. Well that statement can be a bit misleading, while yes a college degree won’t hurt you, it didn’t help me much either. I got into a situation that I had the degree but lacked the experience. Why didn’t anybody tell me to work as well? Get an internship? A mentor? I guess everyone had the misconception that college degrees grantee a good paying job; however, sometimes it’s not the case. I have come to say continuing education, even well beyond an undergrad, will not only help your career situation, but set a standard for your family and or kids, to always continue learning. Objection: An MBA will not guarantee a good job. It won’t guarantee a job, but what does? Having an MBA has put me more marketable with employers. Bryan Cohen argues that “First-year accountants with an associate degree made an average of $33,300 per year, while those with an MBA earned $39,800 per year as of April 2011 (Cohen, 2001). MBA open a world of big possibilities in a career field., The reason I decided, why not get my degree, is because I know it will pay off in the long run, when I want to pursue......

Why I Chose to Pursue an Mba

...Why I Chose to Pursue an MBA Abstract This paper will outline the reasons I chose to pursue an MBA. I will construct and support an argument for my pursuit of an MBA. I will support my decision of pursing an MBA with references and data of individuals who have written articles regarding the pursuit of an MBA for African Americans. This paper will include my Jungian results from the 16-Type Personality Insights questionnaire to see if I have the qualifications of a manager. Why I Chose to Pursue an MBA I decided to pursue an MBA to start a new career and to achieve a personal goal. I have a best friend who persuaded me to further my education. She would tell me, “Seles, this world is going to require that individuals who seek employment have a Master’s degree.” I began to think how my goal would be achieved and what university I attend. Wondering and worrying about the cost of this type of education caused me to have many sleepless nights and much stress. My concern was finding the time between allocating times with my six year-old son, working part-time as a volunteer and taking care/assisting my parents who are 70. Also my biggest issue I had was who would hire a recent graduate who is almost 50, African-American single parent of a six year-old son and who have never worked in the corporate world. So I prayed and asked GOD to authorize my pursuit of a Master’s degree. I talked with my advisor Lance Thorsen and he eased my mind and encouraged me......
