You Only Get One

Summer 2014 in Cleveland, Ohio. My considered-second family, The Morrings, had came to get me in the early afternoon to go on a 2-3 hour drive to get my sister Terraé her new puppy to cure the mourning for her recently lost one. I climbed into the third section of the run down 2014 jet black Tahoe, Ms.Morring in the driver seat, family friend Tanisha in the passenger, Tanisha’s daughter and our friend Darius in the second section, and me and Terraé in the third. The car ride was full of laughter and sing-a-longs with plenty of freeway until we finally got off, although we still had plenty of ground to cover. There was farm after farm, cow after cow and so many different roadside stands selling either fruits, vegetables or pies. It was obvious we were in the countryside part of Ohio by now. We even passed by an outside go-kart place that we all started making plans to come back to before the summer was over. It still took about thirty minutes to get to the house where the woman we were getting the puppy from lived, but once pulling up in the driveway and opening the door, we were bumrushed with the tiniest puppies and kittens any of us had laid our eyes on. We were greeted by a short, Caucasian lady named Amber, who told us that Terraé could pick whatever puppy her heart desired. After about five minutes of looking around, she made a connection with Bubbles, the runt of a litter of Yorkie Terriers. After filling out paperwork and buying any other necessities for Bubbles, we were in the truck heading back home. This is where my reason behind this essay begins. “Are y’all hungry!? I’m hungry!” Ms.Morring said. We all laughed and simultaneously said different versions of “Yes.” as she pulled into a gas station and got out the truck. I reached for my wallet and asked everyone what they wanted, and oce getting orders made my way out the truck and into the gas station, where Ms.Morring was buying seven boxes of mini pizzas, plain cheese, pepperoni and sausage. After she bought our pizzas and gas and I bought our extras, we made our way back, where I handed everyone what they wanted while Ms.Morring pumped gas. A door flung open and slammed. Tanisha’s daughter, Darius, Terraé and I looked straight to the door to see that the slamming came from Tanisha’s door. “What she do that for?” was the look written plainly on everyone’s face. Ms.Morring got back into the car and looked around, “Where’s Tanisha!? I’m ready to go!” “She went inside the gas station.” Terraé said. “Why?” “We don’t know, she just got out and slammed the door behind her and went inside the gas station.” “Okay well she better hurry up before she get left.”. We waited outside for almost ten minutes before Tanisha came out, a bag of chips and candy in her hand. “You’re so selfish, I hope you know that Unique.” she said as she got into the car. “What!? What’re you talking about, how am I “selfish””? “You bought everyone something but my daughter! And you were gonna have the nerve to drive off without buying her anything!” We all sat in the truck with puzzled expressions. What was she talking about? Ms.Morring bought seven pizzas, there are seven people in the truck. “..what? I bought her a pizza.” “She’s a vegetarian! She doesn’t eat meat! You bought only pizzas with meat!” “I got a cheese one too! Tanisha what is wrong with you?!” the argument continued, getting hotter and hotter with every word. Ms.Morring had eventually started up the truck and began driving the route back home, with them yelling at each other for almost ten minutes. “Can y’all just stop!? Y’all are scaring this little girl! She is back here crying and y’all continue to argue in her face!?” Terraé and I both shouted at them. It was sad that it took a couple of 14 year olds to get them to stop. We got back onto the freeway, and where we were, there weren’t lights lined up along the freeway, so once it became pitch black with the moonlight not even bright enough to light a quarter of the sky, we were on our own. “Tati can you please use your GPS to tell me where to go?” I pulled out my phone, 23%. “I have 23% so we’re gonna have to get to a place that you know how to get home from fast.” We drove along the dark freeway for thirty minutes until my phone died. “Okay, I think I know where I’m going from here.” “I hope so, because my phone just died.” We approached the part of a freeway where there was construction, with only two ways to go, and one was home. We turned onto the right lane, which was the where the worst part of the construction was. There was raw gravel on the left side of the lane, and cement blocks lining the right, leaving very little room for a Tahoe to fit. “I can’t believe you did that Unique.” Those six words started it up again. Everyone was now yelling, the car was now moving faster as Ms.Morring got louder, and the only people quiet were Tanisha’s daughter and Bubbles. The whole back of the car jerked to the side, to the left, then to the right. Mrs.Morring lost control of the wheel. Her foot still heavy on the gas, we sped up even faster. I grabbed Terraé’s head, sheltering her from hitting it anywhere while I went head first into the seat of me. We crashed straight into the cinder blocks, up and over. So this essay is about solutions right? Well I’m going to make them so that they assist my story. Don’t distract the driver. You ever heard of the silent treatment when someone upsets you? Use it. Also, make sure that you have a driver with all the direction necessities needed for a road trip, whether it being someone’s brain, a map or some form of a GPS. If the driver is not prepared for you, don’t trust them with your life. Also, if you’re riding with someone that you know has a bad temper, avoid making them upset, as that can cause them to become foot-heavy with the gas pedal out of anger. If people are arguing, be the peacemaker, don’t join in thinking yelling will make them listen to you, because if they’re already yelling at and not listening to each other, why would they listen to you? You only get one life, I don’t want to see on the news how you lost yours.…...

The One and Only Bob Dole

...Bob Dole was born on July 22, 1923 in Russell, Kansas, the son of Bina M. (née Talbott; 1904–1983) and Doran Ray Dole (1901–1975).[4] Bob Dole's father, who had moved the family to Russell while Dole was still a toddler, earned money by running a small creamery. One of his father's customers was the father of future Senator Arlen Specter. [5] During the Great Depression, which severely impacted Kansas and its residents, the Dole family moved to the basement of their home and eventually rented out the upper floors to raise money. As a boy, Dole worked as a soda jerk in the local drug store. Dole graduated from Russell High School in the spring of 1941[6] and enrolled at the University of Kansas the following fall. Dole had been a star high school athlete in Russell, and influential Kansas basketball coach Phog Allen traveled to Russell to recruit him to play for the basketball team. While at KU, Dole played for the basketball team, the track team, and the football team. In football, Dole played at the end position, earning varsity letters in 1942 and 1944. While in college, he joined the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and in 1970 was bestowed with the Fraternity's "Man of the Year" honor.[7] Dole's pre-med studies at KU were interrupted by World War II. After the war, he returned to become a law student. Dole attended the University of Arizona from 1948 to 1951 and earned both his LLB and BA degrees from Washburn University in 1952. There Is Only One "Race"

...TOM 1 ! TOM Professor Lewis English Writing 482 12 March 2011 There is Only One “Race” Exordium Despite thinking I had unconditional love two or three times with women who are now ex girlfriends, it is only with family that I have truly found it. Few things, if anything, have more meaning and value than family, and no one should have to do without the tremendous love, special bond, and support a family can provide. Yet there are so many children in need of good families. A People magazine cover from earlier this year clearly hit a nerve with some as it showed the award-winning actress and recent transracial adopter Sandra Bullock lovingly embracing her newly adopted black infant son (see fig. 1). Madonna also came under fire when she decided to adopt a Malawi baby boy in 2006 (see fig. 2). Dr. Christina Villarreal—a practicing psychotherapist and ex-teacher at Argosy University who is an expert in culturally diverse populations and a contributor to the Department of Public Health—states that in the United States, the Fig. 1 Not everyone looked as happy as Sandra Bullock while holding her baby, Louis Bardo, because of their contrasting views of transracial adoption. majority of hopeful adoptive parents are white, yet half the adoptable children are black. One need not possess great math skills to conclude that these ratios will create a very unhappy ending for Fig. 2 Madonna holds her precious 2-yearold, David Banda. One Way to Get Off

...One way to get off I suddenly awoke from the deep sleep that drugged my mind. Darkness engulfed me. I found myself in a compacted room that was filled with a metallic smell. I tried to move my hands from behind my back but there was a great force that was restraining my movement. A thundering noise echoed through the shadows. It frightened me to my very soul. I was trapped in between the dull grey walls. The hard metal cuffs were biting into the flesh of my wrists. A moan came from the cubicle next to me. I could feel a frisson of fear surging inside of me, gnawing away at my soul. Terrified. I asked in a trembling voice; “Who are you?” A startling voice replied back; “I am Irene. I do not know how I came here” Soon enough my hands were free, and the doors to the cubicle drastically opened. Light shone on Irene’s face, her eyes glistening and her brown hair shining. She wore a shaggy, black button down top and dirty work boots. She seemed frightened from the darkness, but her skin was so porcelain, both pale and perfect. I couldn’t get over the fact that her face looked like a perfect china doll you’d purchase at an antique store. Her lips were a glowing red, and her jaw was so pointed, falling perfectly with her diamond shaped face. Her forehead was rather wide, her eyes almond, her noise pointed and her mouth, a cupid’s bow. Her teeth were perfect. And she had very high cheekbones. Her face would get the attention of anybody, but her clothes were such shabby things.......

You Only Live Once

...With his hair aflame with grey and most his life behind him already, my father brought me into this world at an old age of forty-five. My mother had complications because she was older and her body was not able to easily cope with the trials of giving birth. The birthing process was not an easy one for my parents, because they waited many years before deciding on having children. I never had the opportunity to live the same life many children were able to experience because of that decision. Due to their fairly old age, my parents were sometimes struggling to keep up with my siblings and I as growing up. Even though doing a great job raising us, it didn’t go unnoticed that the years were taking their toll on my parents one after another, much sooner than the parents with kids our age should’ve. Similarly to my parents, my wife Serena and I were married last year at young ages 20 and 23 respectively. Even though we both have ambitious plans for our near future – Serena heading out to Med school while I’m going to keep on studying computer science and possibly even attend in a Law School later on - in planning out our lives we do not want to make the same mistake that my parents once made. We want to have our first child before the age of thirty-five because we want to be physiologically healthy, we want to have energy to spend with our children, and start our family at young age. The first reason I want to have children before the age of 35 is so that Serena and I are both......

They can interfere with cellular function which could lead to death or other serious health problems. Some toxicants are in our everyday lives which increases the ability to being exposed to them like within on water or used on our food. Even though not all hazardous materials are toxins some can be flammable or irritate without actually killing organisms. Spooner, A.M.(2012). Disease causing agents would be toxins, that when you are exposed to over a certain amount of time can affect your overall health. One of these agents would be Perfluorooctanoic sulfonate which is found in cooking pans, used in the creation of Teflon. Studies in rats have shown increased chance of developing brain damage and damaging the reproductive cycle. Another one is Phthalates which is found in everyday products such as makeup, plastic foods and body care products. People can be exposed by eating and drinking food or water that was in contact with this substance. They can affect the reproduction system and can even lead to death from prolong exposure. Since the humans are always changing the way they eat and live so has disease been able to evolve and adapt. ...Your boss is making 7 million dollars per year and driving a luxury car. You, on the other hand, are working hard every day for free and living in poverty. Sure, you have a free place to live with meals and education included, but you have no extra money for other necessities. You did not save enough money in high school and your family does not have money to give you. You are a college athlete. Athletic boosters tempt the athletes with illegal benefits because most do not have money for their own use. The NCAA makes millions of dollars off a college athlete’s performance. The NCAA is a not-for-profit agency that does not operate like one. If college athletes received a yearly stipend from the NCAA, then they might not be lured to take illegal benefits and would have spending money to enjoy the college life experience and pay for needed college items, such as a computer or supplies. For those reasons, college athletes should be paid by the NCAA for the services they provide to their schools. Critics against student athletes being paid believe in the benefits of the athletic scholarship. However, past athletes received improper benefits, financial and otherwise. Reggie Bush accepted improper benefits when he played football for University of Sothern California. What Got You Here Won’t Get You There

...What Got You Here Won’t Get You There I knew of Marshall’s coaching work from the executives I speak to. He has an excellent reputation. When I saw his book at the airport, I had to pick it up. It’s well done and well worth the read. Fact is, every one of us has our weak points. We can learn about them from character assessments, skill testing, business results, and feedback from colleagues, customers, and friends. Somebody like me knows I get bored easily and have a low attention to detail. The essence of Marshall’s message is that if we don’t address these weak points, they can affect our career. Marshall’s emphasis is in communication. There is very little in this book about time management, systems control, delegation techniques and other tools that can help make us more efficient. This book is about the soft side and what you can do about it. Marshall’s approach reminds me of a twelve-step program. First you have to admit you have a problem, then you have to apologize to those you’ve impacted with your problem, and then you have to declare your intention to do something about it, and ultimately, reach into a higher power source. For Marshall, this higher power source is coaching and support from friends. Marshall tells us that successful people believe they have succeeded, can succeed, will succeed, and will choose to succeed. Marshall states the only natural law he’s witnessed in three decades of observing success is this: “People will do......

... The new immigration policy of the Bahamas What’s an immigrant? An Immigrant is a person who seek to find refuge into a country to which they are not native in order to settle there, especially as a permanent resident or future citizens. The government has set laws making it difficult for foreigners to have rightful citizenship because of the various common situation we’re facing today such as diseases the rise of crime rate and the increasing population by the day. for these reasons I do agree with the new immigration policy, In the Bahamas today we are facing various issues but, more of illegal immigrants coming into the country. ...In the Bible, Christ’s resurrection is explored after his death, leading into resurrection. Events that lead to his demise lead to his return in the real world, bringing a new and insightful light to the story. The significance of Christ being able to self-resurrect back into the world is because he’s the only one to ever do it, and do it successfully, whereas other Gods don’t have the ability to do so. To further explain, according to the Bible, Christ is the only deity but self identified man to essentially do this. Considering his abilities is through God, and God wanted reveal to man proof of his power through Jesus, without directly showing it to them like many times prior, by raising Jesus from the dead. To emphasize this, “because He has appointed a day on which, He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.” Christ had mentioned several times that his death and resurrection would be the one thing to give to the sinful and unbelieving world God made for them. Such as, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” Further explaining that he knew he would be able to come back with ease. Foreknowing one’s own death is common in most......

Justin: One Night Only

...One Night With Justin January 17, 2007 is a night I will remember forever. It is the night my dreams became a reality for one night and one night only. On this day at 7:30P.M., at the Save-Mart Center in Fresno, California, I saw the man of my dream, My Love, Justin Timberlake. What made this night even better was the fact that I was about 20 feet from the stage. I had floor seats to the most amazing concert ever. My roommate and I were in heaven. Justin came to Fresno on his FutureSex/LoveSounds tour. Joining him on tour was female singer Pink, who was the opening act, and producer and rapper Timbaland, who joined Justin on stage for a new numbers, including a monologue of his own. Pink opened up the show at the stroke of 7:30. She came out in a denim tank top and denim pleaded skirt. She got the party started. Her performance was energetic and amazing. She even performed an acrobatic routine in the air. At around 9:00P.M., the teasing began. The band members slowly made their way to the stage and they began to play a little interlude. The arena, already lively, began screaming their heads off, crying, shaking, jumping up and down, and anticipating the moment when the most amazing man in the world would reveal himself. The first song started up. It was the title track FutureSex/LoveSounds. Justin emerged from the center of the stage, dressed in a black suit, with a white guitar around his neck. Silk screens were surrounding the entire round stage. The......
